Chloe sat on the edge of her bed, staring blankly at the clothes scattered across her room. Her closet door was wide open, hangers twisted in different directions. Dresses, skirts, jackets, and tops were everywhere. On her bed, on the floor, even draped over the back of her chair.

She had already changed outfits four times.

And now, as the clock crept closer to seven, her heart could only beat faster.

"What am I even doing?" she muttered under her breath, running her fingers through her hair in frustration.

"It's just a regular dinner. It's not even a date!" She scolded herself. "Why am I getting so worked up over what to wear then?"

She had been to a lot of dinners. Some with important CEOs, their children, others with charity organizers. She had worn heels and practiced her smiles in the mirror.

She knew how to talk, how to charm, how to nod politely when someone went on about their success.

But this was different. And for some untold reason, it scared her.

Gray blinked. For a second, the world around him seemed to still. The sounds of the city dimmed, and the glow from the streetlights blurred.Chloe's words lingered in the air and in his mind."Would you like to stay with me tonight?"His first reaction was surprise. He hadn't expected that from her, and especially not tonight. But her expression was honest, her gaze steady as it looked at him. There wasn't anything coy or teasing about it. She was actually serious about it.Chloe meant her words."He would be lying if he said he didn't want that." Gray thought. He was a man with needs too. It had been a long time since someone had looked at him like that, or made him feel wanted. Chloe was beautiful, charming, and tonight she gave him more reasons to laugh than he ever had in a long time. The idea of ending the night wrapped in warmth, closeness, maybe even pleasure was tempting. But even so, no.He wasn't that man. He wouldn't let his desires overtake his reasoning especially when it

  • Chapter 38: Stay for the Night

Click.Lawrence blinked before grinning."That was perfect!" he announced like he just captured a shot worthy of a magazine cover. "Absolutely perfect." He silently celebrated. On the other hand, Gray sat motionless. His cheek tingled from the kiss. Slowly, he turned his head to Chloe, his eyes wide."Uh...what was that?"Chloe looked completely unbothered, still smiling as she reached for her wine."What? It's good for the promo. It sells the whole date night vibe, right?" she said playfully, echoing Lawrence's earlier words."Exactly!" Lawrence added, already backing away as he flicked through the pictures. "Romance, pasta, and perfectly lit ambience. I should've charged for this shoot. Be thankful it's free.""I see then," Gray mumbled in a low voice, shaking his head in disbelief.Gray watched as Lawrence disappeared toward the counter again, a satisfied grin on his face. It was obvious the man was enjoying himself.Soon after, Lawrence returned carrying two elegant glasses."Enjo

  • Chapter 37: Best Wingman

Gray reached for the breadbasket without a word. He grabbed a slice and buttered it up. Chloe picked up a piece too, still grinning."This bread is so good," she said after taking a bite. The bread was soft and warm. It was one of the best she had ever had in a restaurant."Yup. I told you the food is nice, so just order what you want later on," Gray muttered, trying to avoid her gaze."Yeah." Chloe glanced at the menu."I think this is the first time I've eaten somewhere that doesn't have at least one truffle dish that costs a thousand dollars," she said, half-joking."That's tragic." Gray looked up with a smile. "I guess you'll have to settle for other dishes.""I guess so." She laughed. "Hopefully I survive."Lawrence returned a few minutes later with a pen and notepad in hand, though the grin on his face hadn't faded."Are you ready to order?""What's good here?" Chloe glanced at Gray."Everything," he said. Then, after a beat, "But if you're asking for a real answer, you should g

  • Chapter 36: Local Legend

It took them nearly an hour to arrive at the restaurant Gray had chosen. They used one of the Davenport family's cars. Partly because Gray didn't own one, but mostly because Chloe's security was still a top priority. She wasn't allowed to go anywhere without any of her assigned guards lurking nearby. Which was understandable, especially with how wealthy her family was.The restaurant was nestled in a quiet corner of the city. It didn't appear to be well-known but still modest looking in its own right. A touch of class without too much fancy. This... would do.Gray had once worked there, years ago, scrubbing dishes in the back kitchen. The owners would sometimes offer him free food and allow him to take leftovers, knowing his situation. The food there had always been incredible. Rich flavors, handmade pasta, and sauces simmered for hours by skilled chefs. So he never understood why the place never took off.Maybe it was the location? Poor marketing? Or maybe people just overlooked it b

  • Chapter 34: Who Knows

Chloe froze completely at the question. Her pen hovered above the paper, and her breath caught slightly in her throat. She wasn't expecting it at all.Dinner? She could barely move as her eyes stayed fixed on Gray. He looked casual about it, as if he just asked if she wanted coffee. But for some reason, the question made her heart race."I, uh..." She opened her mouth but no words came out right away.Gray tilted his head, waiting. He even doubted if it was the right choice."I mean, yeah. Sure." Chloe finally managed to say, hoping her voice didn't sound as awkward as she felt. "Dinner sounds good."Gray smiled lightly, genuinely pleased."Great. After your session today, I'll come back around seven?" he asked casually, like this was the most normal thing in the world."Okay. That works." Chloe nodded quickly."Alright. Finish your task first, then." Gray gave Chloe one last smile before he went back and focused on what he was doing earlier.Chloe, on the other hand, had a hard time
