"You remember that promise right?"

Maks's eyes rounded. He promised that if Sam ever went berserk then he would kill him.

"Meg will hate me_"

"You're all about being grounded right. This is the best option, I think she'll understand." Sam said.

"Staying sane is up to you and killing you is up to me. So for your sake."

"I'm doing this for my sanity." Sam said facing him. "Try to stop me."

Maks walked out the door.

"What did he say?" Meg asked and he couldn't look her in the eyes.

"We have an understanding."

"What kind of understanding?"

"You wouldn't get it." Maks said coolly and she sat hugging her knees.

...

Miguel wanted Sam to join his cause, he didn't want him to be a victim of prejudice and rejection just like he was with his friend Stacy.

Maks stood, he couldn't wait around for Miguel.

He went after Miguel and so did Sam who ran on all fours. Harley hung on to her hellhound Blackjack with Artemis behind her.

Miguel was headed his way with his other gang.

Maks stood back and he approached Harley. "Can I borrow Blackjack?"

Harley grinned. Maks had been so aloof with her hellhound that it was surprising he asked. "What for?"

He paused and she groaned.

She whistled, Blackjack appeared bolting towards Maks. They both crashed.

"ACK!" Maks froze at Blackjack licking his hair up to a stand.

Maks wiped his hair. "I need you to find Chupacabra."

He showed him a photo of Miguel.

Blackjack vanished and Maks stood prepared with Harley, Artemis and Sam.

They appeared before Miguel and his group.

"Ah, you have returned. I was wondering how long it would take."

"Don't flatter yourself Hernandez. You're a menace." Maks said pointing at him.

Miguel glared at Harley in her leather jacket, shirt, jeans and boots. She held a sword and shield.

"You threw me in that forest." He said to her. "I intend to return the favour, permanently."

He lunged and vanished. Harley rotated.

He bashed the group out of order and gave Harley a high kick.

The other chupas ran after them.

Sam grabbed one by the tail and whirled it to the group.

Artemis ran towards one and grew in size grabbing them like action figures. They snapped like twigs.

Maks blocked their claws and blows furiously. He slammed the tip of his finger into one's throat and it whimpered falling back.

Maks hopped and jumped on his solar plexus.

He glanced at Miguel furiously attacking Harley and Sam trying to go toe to toe with the rest of them.

Sam was losing every atom of his sanity for every attack. They were actively annoying him like jackals on a predator to drive him crazy.

Sam roared transforming.

Harley punched Miguel and she lifted the shield. His claws grazed against it. He swiped her shield away and she kicked him in the face.

He pulled her hair and she screamed.

Harley growled and she reached into her pocket for her powder. She crushed it and it outlined Miguel's body.

She punched him and he raised his fist at her. It went through a portal and he punched himself.

"Fu_"

She pushed him through a portal and then prepared to kick him.

Harley's eyes narrowed and she tossed him to a wall.

He fell over. Then zipped around her before she landed on him.

"Join me Sam, these fools will not hesitate to destroy you at the chance they have."

Sam had the promise at the back of his mind. Would Maks keep his promise without hesitation? The battle between his human self and beast intensified.

His muscles grew and his canines enlarged.

Blackjack grabbed a Chupacabra by its mane biting down. Another nipped it and Artemis slapped it off.

Maks shrank running towards Miguel who was brawling.

Maks ran up his body and Miguel slapped him off. He crunched against a wall.

Maks grew back to size and Miguel stomped on him. He coughed.

Blackjack went at him and he swung the hound into the wall.

Sam spiralled out of control scrapping against the chupacabras. He went after Miguel growling and scratching his face.

Miguel punched him. "Yes!"

"No!" Maks said.

Sam lunged at Maks and he clenched his teeth when Sam pressed down on his throat.

Maks turned shrank and clutched onto his back. His lower half wrapping around him.

Sam walked backwards and hit him against a tree.

"Maks!" Artemis said and a chupa speared her.

Miguel laughed. "The time has come, let go!"

"Please, I need you to hold on." Maks said.

Sam threw him over his shoulder.

"Finish him!"

"Remember me, Dakota, your dad? You'll lose everything!" Maks said pulling up.

"Be a monster as you were made to be. The human world will never accept you! Embrace your darkness."

"Don't make me do something I'll regret." He said sweating.

"You're my friend, not a monster."

"Friend?" Sam churned out. "Friends don't break promises!"

He lifted a claw and palmed his face.

Maks clutched his chest.

Maks frowned and kicked him right in the jaw. The yellow ant aura emerged and Maks punched and kneed him in the gut forcing air out of his lungs.

Miguel felt a need to stop him before he destroyed Sam.

A hand emerged from the wall and grabbed him. "Huh!?"

Harley from the other side smashed him against the wall.

Maks roared punching Sam. "You leave me no choice!" He hit Sam so hard that he collapsed.

Sam stayed still and didn't get back up.

Harley made a small pocket of portal and punched him. She pulled his arm through the wall and closed the portal. His arm was stuck in the wall. So was his other arm.

"I let you escape, not this time."

Miguel was completely at her mercy. "I may die but Sam is at the mercy of his impulses."

Harley hesitated. She gasped when Artemis shot him in the skull. Point blank.

"Let's hope he never comes back."

"Next time if you want to kill someone, have the guts to back it up." Artemis said to her.

Harley clenched her teeth and tears rolled down.

Harley may be a martial artist from age 6. she may be stronger than Maks but she doesn't have the liver to kill.

Sam shrank back to his human form. Maks hoisted him up ascending.

Harley hopped on blackjack and they teleported.

Maks watched the staff at the syndicate treating Sam by the glass window.

Harley had a bleak look on her face. She held the pink teddy bear and Blackjack tugged at it. "No, that's mine!"

Blackjack ripped it away from her.

He brought it back and she saw the tear on its neck and she buried her face in her hands.

Artemis grimaced going to him. "Maks..."

The cop had not bought the motorcycle story. Ten minutes later, the police cruiser was gone, leaving Harley and Sam walking perfectly straight lines along the rain-slicked pavement while the officer monitored their sobriety. Harley stared drily ahead, her jaw set into a rigid line as she aggressively marched down the sidewalk. Her future-lawyer pride was entirely bruised, and her tactical momentum had been completely halted by a routine breathalyser test. Right beside them, Maks trotted along the curb, his long giraffe neck swaying smoothly while his large bloodhound head let out a loud, vibrating, rhythmic *neigh*. Harley snapped her head around, her sharp eyes locking onto his snout as she frowned deeply. "It’s not funny, Maks." Sam rubbed his sore neck, jogging a bit to keep up with her fast pace. He looked up at the towering, chimeric hybrid in pure confusion. "How do you even know he’s laughing?" "Because his bloodhound ears are twitching in a mock-courtroom cadence

"I'm trying to be there for my friends," Keisha cried out, her protective armor completely shattering as she looked at Harley and Maks. "This is the best way you can be," Elvis commanded softly, his grounding guardian energy wrapping around her. Keisha looked down, a sudden wave of deep guilt washing over her chest because, deep down, she felt an overwhelming sense of relief about leaving the front line. She took a deep breath, adjusted her black gloves, and offered a tight, grateful nod to the others. Artemis stepped forward, her towering warrior frame casting a shadow over the metal table. "Julie and I will go to the realms to clear up this mess." Julie chuckled softly, her golden fox ears twitching as she folded her arms. "Yeah. Do not want to do any more damage to my celestial license." The four of them moved quickly, slipping out into the rain-slicked night to handle their respective missions. Maks stood by the cracked concrete wall, his dark eyes heavily bloodshot from the

The heavy steel door didn't melt from red lightning, nor was it smashed by an underworld trident. Instead, a sudden, erratic hum vibrated through the safehouse walls. The overhead fluorescent lights flickered violently before exploding into darkness, cutting off the building's main power supply. *BOOM.* The door was ripped clean off its hinges by a high-pressure torrent of water that surged into the room like a localized flash flood. Through the churning mist, two figures stepped into the safehouse. They were twin brothers, moving with a chilling, synchronized focus. The first twin, Wade, held his hands out as tendrils of pressurized water spun around his forearms like liquid whips. The second twin stepped up right beside him, his eyes glowing with a faint, static-blue light as he raised his palms toward the room’s dead electrical wiring. Even with the main power cut, the residual electricity in the backup generators and battery-powered appliances began to violently crackle under h

The two women lunged forward, throwing their arms around each other in a fierce, tight hug that spoke volumes of their shared history. As they finally broke the embrace, Maks stepped forward, wiping a layer of Underworld soot from his jeans. He offered a warm, genuine smile, extending his calloused hand toward the fox spirit. "It's nice to see you again, Julie." Julie didn't take his hand. Instead, she giggled softly and stepped right into his space, wrapping him in a brief, warm hug before pulling back. She turned her sharp, knowing gaze toward the rest of the room, her eyes lingering on Keisha and Elvis. She offered them a slow, respectful nod, which Elvis immediately returned with his characteristic, quiet reverence. With the tension in the room partially diffused, Julie smoothly glided over to the metal folding table where Doreen had set out some basic rations and water. She sat back, making herself comfortable as if she hadn't just materialized out of a lightning bolt. Her gol

"You betrayed me, Harley," Ares rumbled, his voice shaking the walls. "And so did you, Maks... after I helped you find that dog of yours. This is the thanks I get?"Before Maks or Harley could answer, Eric stepped squarely into the center of the room, his pale face completely firm as he faced the man who had ruined his life. "You isolated me for a decade, Ares. You trapped my mind in the dark and stole my daughter's childhood. There is absolutely no forgiving that."Ares actually flinched, a flash of genuine, deeply warped hurt crossing his chiseled face. He tightened his fists, his voice cracking with intense defensive pride. "I tried to do good! I kept the monster contained! I protected this world, and no one... absolutely no one is appreciating me!"Maks bared his teeth, stepping up right beside Eric as his C-Level Awakener System began wildly screaming with danger alerts. "All you care about is how the end justifies the means, Ares. You turn people into property and call it charit
