Chapter 4
Author: Max Dare
Ray walked into the real estate agency next to Mallory Avenue.

"Here to look at a place, sir?" a male agent greeted him almost instantly.

Ray nodded. "To buy."

The agent's face lit up as if someone had just turned on all the lights inside him. "Of course! What kind of property are you looking for?"

"I've already decided," Ray said. "I want the sole villa in Mallory Avenue. Call the owner. I'll sign today. I'll pay the listed price, but I need the keys immediately. Renovation starts today."

The agent blinked, almost certain he'd misheard.

Was this real life? A buyer just walking in, offering to pay full price—on the spot?

"This—yes, yes, of course! I'll call right now!" His voice trembled with excitement.

That villa was listed at 1.2 million. Even with his meager half-percent commission, that meant six thousand in his pocket. Six thousand, from one deal!

Good thing he wasn't a woman, he thought fleetingly, or he might have suspected this guy was trying to seduce him.

Half an hour later, the owner arrived.

Everything went smoothly. Ray wired over a hundred-thousand-dollar deposit. Once the paperwork was ready, they could head straight to the county recorder's office to close the deal.

The seller, seeing the deposit and Ray's ID, happily handed over the keys. It wasn't like there was anything left inside to steal—just an empty shell, no valuables, and some old furniture.

The agent was over the moon. His coworkers could only look on, half in awe, half in envy. One hour of work, six thousand earned—it was a story that spread fast.

Within hours, the tale rippled through the agency network, through Mallory Avenue, and by nightfall, every gossip-loving person in the community had something new to chatter about.

Ray walked into the villa, the key cool in his hand. The facial-recognition gate recognized him automatically; he was already a registered resident. Inside, he sat down and opened his laptop.

Time to search.

For what? Home renovation.

He filtered by reviews and reputation, then dialed a number.

"Hello?" a gruff male voice answered.

"I want to renovate a villa," Ray said.

"No problem," came the reply.

"I have one requirement," Ray continued. "It needs to be solid. As in—someone could hit it with a hammer, and it still wouldn't break. The windows, too—install retractable steel shutters."

The line went quiet for a moment. Clearly, the man hadn't heard such a request before.

But business was business.

"No problem," he finally said.

"How long will it take?"

"At least six months," the man replied. "Depends on the villa's size."

Ray smiled. "I need it done within two months."

There was silence on the other end.

This wasn't a shed or a kennel. A full villa renovation in two months? Impossible.

"…That'll cost extra," the man said at last.

"No problem." Ray beamed.

The contractor froze. He hadn't even named a price yet.

"Where are you?" he asked quickly. "I'll come take a look first."

"Alright," Ray said, giving him the address. He'd already read plenty of reviews about this company—every one of them praising their ability to handle "impossible" projects.

Two months to turn an ordinary villa into a steel fortress—it was the kind of job no one should be able to do. But this was Gohaven, the land of miracles in concrete and steel. If anyone could pull it off, it would be them.

He set his phone down and opened his trading app, fingers moving with precision. Memories and data flooded back, strategies unfolding like instinct.

But before the contractor arrived, someone else showed up at his door.

The Gantts were home watching their grandson when someone banged on the door—loud, urgent knocks that rattled the frame.

"Who is it?" Josh grumbled as he shuffled over.

When he opened the door, he found Judy Cosgrave from Building 7—famous in the neighborhood for her sharp tongue and endless gossip.

"Josh," she blurted out, eyes glinting. "You really kept this one quiet!"

He blinked. Kept what quiet?

Ah—could it be the divorce? Had the news already spread? Impossible. No one in the family would talk about something so shameful. Unless—

That bastard Ray!

Realization struck, and Josh exploded. "That damned brat! Hit me yesterday, and now he's spreading divorce rumors everywhere! Trying to make a fool out of us?

"Ungrateful wretch! We fed him, clothed him, took him in—and this is how he repays us?"

Judy stared, momentarily stunned. Divorce? Well, well. That made things even juicier.

She smirked. "So it's true! Your daughter and son-in-law are divorced! Oh, Josh, you're something else." She gave him a mocking thumbs-up.

"I just heard from the real estate agent—your ex-son-in-law, Ray, bought that villa in Mallory Avenue. 1.2 million! Didn't even haggle!"

"What?" Josh nearly shouted.

Ray? Buy a villa?

Impossible. Ray made barely over five thousand a month, almost all of which went to them. After the divorce, he'd left with nothing. How could he possibly afford a 1.2-million-dollar villa?

"It's true!" Judy laughed. "Go see for yourself!"

Josh faltered. As annoying as she was, Judy wasn't one to invent gossip from thin air. Still—Ray buying a villa? It sounded like nonsense.

"Josh, your family's moving up in the world!" Another neighbor, Kelly Brook from upstairs, hurried over, eyes wide with envy. "A villa! That's incredible!"

Josh swayed on his feet. His head buzzed. One person could be mistaken, but two?

Judy, thrilled to stir the pot, turned to Kelly. "Didn't you hear? Josh's daughter and son-in-law divorced!"

"What?" Kelly gasped. "Josh, really? You let go of a son-in-law who can buy a 1.2-million-dollar villa? You know, my daughter Jenny's still single. Maybe I'll introduce them."

She wasn't joking.

A man who could drop 1.2 million in cash on a house? Divorced or not, who cared? Wealth erased everything.

Besides, everyone in the neighborhood knew it—Ray was a catch.

Ray had turned Jayzepan into his own personal playground, slipping between identities as he moved from one beautiful woman to the next. Once the apocalypse finally came, he watched the darkness in people's hearts unfold with cool detachment, savoring the sight of beautiful women, married and unmarried alike, crumbling in the face of hunger, thoroughly enjoying himself the whole time.Once he'd had his fill of Jayzepan, Ray moved on to Caumeria. He was, by this point, a god of time itself, free to bend it however he pleased. He went back to the earliest days of the colonial era and watched the brigands land on that brand-new continent. When they'd first arrived, they'd been starving and parched, and it was the native peoples who took them in, giving them food and water. That day became known, among the brigands, as "Thanksgiving."They gave thanks for having been sheltered and cared for by the natives. But brigands always repay kindness with betrayal, and once they'd set their si

"They've got to be at least an F cup, maybe even a G."The lead punk turned to Noelle. "Mrs. Halloway, your son owes us 25 thousand dollars. You're paying it back for him."25 thousand dollars?!Noelle's stomach dropped. She only made a thousand six a month, and after living costs, whatever she managed to save could be counted on one hand. 25 thousand dollars might as well have been an astronomical sum.She stared at her son in disbelief. "How could you possibly owe them that much money?"Ronan's face twisted with anger. "I only borrowed 60 dollars from them. Their interest rates are insane; it snowballed to 25 thousand dollars in a few months."Ah. A loan shark, then."That's illegal. I'm calling the police," Noelle said. She was an adult, after all, and her first instinct was to report it.The lead punk sneered. "Since the lady's not playing along, guess we'll have to get rough. How about we shoot a few nice photo sets of you, Mrs. Halloway? Bet you won't feel like calling th

Ray felt oddly flat about it even as he let himself relax into it. He'd been with more beautiful women, better-built women, than he could count, and the only reason he'd bothered with this whole roundabout approach before getting her into bed was to manufacture exactly this sense of novelty, of anticipation. But that anticipation, that novelty, always peaked in the instant he actually got what he wanted, and then vanished completely just as fast. After all, Noelle was still only an 82. She was no Selene, no Celestine, no Rosalind or Seraphine.Click! The sound of a lock turning, then a door opening and slamming shut, a heavy bang.It jolted Noelle awake from where she'd drifted off. "Ronan's home!"She'd invited Ray over in the first place to talk some sense into her son, to steer him away from bad influences and get him focused on his studies, on getting into a good university. And instead, she'd ended up in bed with his teacher. If her son ever found out about this, she wouldn

Ray smiled. "No need to be shy about it."Then he leaned in close to Noelle's ear. "No need to explain yourself to strangers, either."Noelle nodded along in a daze, not even registering how flimsy Ray's logic actually was. They weren't husband and wife, nor were they even a couple; just a teacher and a student's parent. Why would they need to sit pressed together like this? It really did call for some kind of explanation. But her head was too fogged over to think straight anymore. Whatever Ray said simply became the truth as far as she was concerned. The driver glanced at them both in the rearview mirror and gave an approving laugh. "You two really do make a lovely couple. One so handsome, the other so pretty. I'm almost jealous.""Yeah, I still can't believe my luck, landing such a beautiful wife," Ray said with a smile, sliding one arm around Noelle's shoulders as he spoke.'He's holding me! He's actually holding me!'Noelle nearly burst on the spot. Some part of her sensed t

Ray savored the way Noelle's body responded, all without a shred of deliberate effort on his part, or so it seemed. He simply let himself sway with the motion of the train like any ordinary passenger, bumping against her every so often, brushing past her, nothing out of the ordinary at all.Hm?He noticed a middle-aged man squeezing in beside them, sharp suit, gold-rimmed glasses, and yet somehow a filthy pervert underneath it all, one hand creeping quietly toward Noelle's chest. Because Ray's own arms were braced on either side, they happened to shield Noelle's chest already, so the man in glasses had to snake his hand up from underneath Ray's arm instead, sneaking in low to ambush Noelle's prized assets. But the instant his hand reached out, Ray's own hand shot out like lightning and clamped around the pervert's wrist. "What do you think you're doing?" he demanded loudly.Noelle startled awake as if from a dream, glanced down, and went pale with shock. The man's hand had come w

Hm. Now that was a nice angle."Ma'am," Ray said, his voice soft and thoughtful, "it isn't that I'm trying to make things hard for you, but this has already been reported to the school's disciplinary office. It'll be extremely difficult for me to walk it back.""Please, Mr. Caldridge, I'm begging you!" Noelle held her ninety-degree bow, perfectly still.Well now, this was getting good.Noelle's face, honestly, was only about an 82 out of 100. Certainly pretty enough to be called a great beauty, but still a notch below true perfection.Besides, she was a respectable married woman.Did he feel any guilt about it? Not a chance. If there was exactly one thing in this life Ray never felt an ounce of sympathy for, it was Jayzepan. He put on a thoughtful frown, as if this were agonizing for him. Noelle never straightened out of her bow, and the weight on her chest was clearly starting to tell, sweat beading on her forehead.Only then did Ray give a slow nod. "I'll see what I can do."
