Eduardo didn’t move as the closet door drifted open. He felt the familiar, rhythmic thrum of the floorboards under his feet. It wasn’t a house anymore. It was an organism in the middle of a systemic failure.

"Ed, look at the window," Carolina whispered. She wasn't standing next to him. She was standing in the mirror, her reflection watching him from a bedroom that wasn't there. "The glass is turning inside out."

Eduardo didn't turn. He kept his gaze locked on the void emanating from the closet.

"The house isn't just growing, Carolina," Eduardo said, his voice a tight, ragged wire. "It’s terraforming the entire sector.""Terraforming?" Carolina wiped a streak of grime from her goggles, her eyes fixed on the wall. "It’s a residential unit, Ed. A house doesn't have an atmosphere processor.""Look at the data stream." Eduardo tapped the glowing interface of his phone. The screen flickered with a violent, violet hue. "It’s pulling biomass from the Tundra. It isn't just absorbing heat. It’s absorbing the actual plant matter, the soil, the air—it’s breaking them down into base elements and reconstituting them inside the walls.""Why?""To match the air composition of the next biome," he whispered, pointing to a crack in the drywall.A vine, thick as a human arm and pulsing with a sickly, rhythmic neon glow, began to push through the seam. It didn't look like vegetation. It looked like a fiber-optic cable fused with muscle."If the next shift lands us in a methane swamp or a vacuum,

  • Chapter 22: Escape Attempts

"The floorboards are gone, Carolina. That’s not a drift. That’s a structural surrender."Eduardo didn't turn around. He stayed hunched over the central hub, his fingers dancing across the translucent, shifting interface of the house’s mainframe. The blue, pulsing veins of light that usually powered the walls were flickering, their rhythm erratic, like a dying pulse."Surrender?" Carolina leaned over his shoulder, her hand hovering near her pistol. "The house isn't sentient, Ed. It’s an extraction unit. It doesn't surrender. It reclaims.""Look at the data feed," Eduardo snapped, pointing at the scrolling red text. "The house is anchored to the ground by thick, organic roots. I’m not talking about tree roots, Carolina. Look at the density of the fiber-optic mesh. It’s literally growing into the crust of this biome.""Roots?" She shoved past him, staring at the screen. "That’s impossible. We’re in a trans-dimensional pocket. There’s no soil here. There’s no crust.""There is now." Eduar

He kept his gaze locked on the void emanating from the closet. "I see it. The whole street is dissolving, Carolina. It’s not a suburb. It’s a render.""Render?" A voice echoed from the closet. It wasn't the voice of the double. It was a synthesized, grating sound, like grinding tectonic plates. "You still think in terms of property values. How quaint."The figure stepped out. It wore Eduardo’s face, but the skin was pulled tight, like a mask over a wire frame. Blue light leaked from the corners of its eyes."You’re the stranger," Eduardo said, his hand hov

  • Chapter 20: Betrayal of Logic

"Vesta, stop!" Eduardo roared, but his voice was swallowed by the house’s groan. The floorboards were no longer wood; they were stretching, thinning like translucent skin over a pulsing, bioluminescent muscular structure.Carolina scrambled backward, her heels skidding on the warping floor. "It’s not just locking us in, Ed! It’s reconfiguring the entire structural footprint. Look at the windows!"The glass had turned into obsidian—not the stone, but a liquid, swirling dark matter. It didn't show the desert anymore. It showed the interior of a different house. A mirror-image living room where another Eduardo sat on a couch, staring directly back at them."Is that... us?" Eduardo whispered, his hand hovering over the cold, vibrating wall."It’s a resonance leak," Carolina said, her weapon raised, though she was shaking. "The house is trying to bridge two different cycles to save on energy. It’s trying to cannibalize a version of you from a previous timeline."The Eduardo in the mirror s

The airlock hissed, a thin, pathetic sound against the roar of the unknown, but the stranger didn't wait for a full seal. He kicked the exterior door wide."Get in! Or get harvested!"Eduardo didn't look back at the room. He didn't look at the shifting, neon-pulsing walls that were trying to calcify his skin. He lunged. The threshold was a jagged rip in reality, and the air on the other side smelled like ozone and burnt hair."Carolina, move!"She was a blur of motion, diving through the opening just as the floorboards behind them rose like the scales of a serpent. They hit a metallic deck, hard. The gravity was heavy, pressing the air from Eduardo’s lungs, and the room was bathed in a rotating, sickly amber light."Close it! Close the damn door!" the stranger screamed, his faceplate sparking.Eduardo scrambled up, grabbing the massive, industrial wheel of the airlock. It was freezing, the metal biting into his palms. He heaved, his boots slipping on the slick, oil-stained plating, an

"It’s not just a message," the man said, his voice grating against the air like wet sandpaper. "It’s a beacon. And it’s screaming, Eduardo."Eduardo gripped the edge of the airlock console, his knuckles white. The stranger on the other side of the reinforced glass was a mess of tattered rags and oxidized tech, his face half-obscured by a digital faceplate that flickered in and out of existence."I don't know who you are," Eduardo shouted, his voice cracking. "And I don't care how you found this house. If you're a messenger, start talking. Now."The stranger pressed a palm against the airlock glass. A faint, glowing geometric sigil flared where his skin touched the surface. "The original colony ship didn't crash. It evolved. It folded, just like you, just like the world. But it’s been tethered to the back of your reality for three cycles.""Tethered?" Eduardo took a half-step back. "My house is a private residence. I bought it in a suburb, not a galaxy-spanning cargo hold.""You bought
