The blinding white light of the terminal’s final sequence receded, leaving Adriano gasping for air in the sudden, oppressive gloom of the subway station. The hum of the machine had died, replaced by the distant, rhythmic thudding of a thousand footsteps echoing through the tunnel.

"Did we do it?" Sofia choked out, dragging herself upright against a rusted pylon. "Is the sector clear?"

Adriano stared at his interface. The blue light was erratic, strobing like a failing bulb. "It’s not finished. The upload hit ninety-nine percent, then locked. The terminal... it’s bricked, Sofia."

"So we're sitting ducks," she spat, checking the magazine of her sidearm. "And that beacon on your belt is still singing."

Adriano tore the device off his waist and hurled it into the darkness of the tunnel. It sparked against the concrete, a tiny, glowing ember in the abyss, but the sound of the approaching swarm didn't falter. It grew louder, more synchronized.

"We need to move," Adriano said, his voice tight. "The signal isn't just calling them. It’s coordinating them."

"Move where? Every exit is crawling with them," Sofia countered.

"The ventilation shafts behind the platform," Adriano pointed to a grate near the floor. "I can map the layout. If we can bypass the main hub, we might find a secondary relay."

As they scrambled toward the grate, a wave of desperate survivors burst onto the platform from the stairwell. They were battered, weeping, and clutching makeshift weapons—a motley group of nearly fifteen people. They saw Adriano and stopped, their eyes wide with a mix of terror and blind hope.

"You," one of them, a man with a bloodied bandage over his eye, wheezed. "We saw the light. You’re the one holding the safe zone, right? Please. We have nowhere else to go."

Adriano paused, the weight of his capacity limit pressing into his mind like a physical vice.

[ WARNING: CAPACITY LIMIT 10/10 ]

[ EXPANSION REQUIRED TO ADMIT NEW ASSETS ]

"I can't," Adriano said, his voice breaking. "I’m full. If I let you in, the system will collapse the barrier."

"We'll die out here!" a woman screamed, holding a child to her chest. "They're right behind us! Just open the door! Do something!"

Sofia stepped forward, her hand resting on the hilt of her blade. "Adriano, we can't leave them. We have to expand."

"With what energy, Sofia?" Adriano hissed. "I'm already running on fumes. If I expand to twenty, I'll burn out, and then all twenty of us will be slaughtered."

"Then prioritize!" she snapped. "Some of these people are wounded, some are strong. We pick who stays and who goes."

"You want me to play god?" Adriano looked at her, horrified. "I’m an accountant, not a judge."

"You’re a leader now, whether you like it or not," she said, her voice dropping to a harsh, cold whisper. "Look at them. You want to save everyone and end up with twenty corpses? Or do you want to keep the core group alive and maybe, just maybe, push through this?"

Adriano looked at the crowd. The man with the bandaged eye looked capable. The woman with the child... he felt a surge of nausea.

"I can't just pick and choose," Adriano said, his hands trembling as he hovered them over his interface.

"The system is forcing your hand," Sofia said, glancing toward the tunnel. The first of the swarm—gaunt, grey-skinned things—began to pour onto the platform. "Either you expand and gamble our lives, or you lock the gate and let them handle the consequences. Choose, Adriano!"

"Everyone, get behind me!" Adriano shouted, his voice cracking with the strain of the decision. He pushed the system to its breaking point.

[ CAPACITY EXPANSION: 10 -> 20 ]

[ VITALITY DRAIN: CRITICAL ]

[ WARNING: STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY COMPROMISED ]

A golden pulse rippled from his chest, broader and thinner than before. It washed over the group, pulling the fifteen newcomers into the fold. The barrier flickered, the gold turning a translucent, fragile yellow.

"You did it," Sofia sighed, though her face remained grim.

"I did it," Adriano whispered, his vision blurring. "But we're spread so thin now. We have no food, no water, and enough mouths to starve in a day."

They retreated into the tunnels, a frantic, disorganized mass of twenty people. Hours passed in the damp, claustrophobic dark. The atmosphere was stifling. Back in a makeshift encampment near a junction box, the reality of the situation set in.

"We have two cans of beans and a half-bottle of water left," Leo said, his voice flat. He had been one of the original five, and his patience was rapidly eroding. "And you added fifteen more people? Adriano, we’re going to be eating our own shoes by tomorrow night."

"I had to," Adriano said, hunched over a flickering terminal.

"Did you?" a man named Elias, one of the new arrivals, stood up. He was tall, gaunt, and carried a heavy iron pipe. "Because from where I’m standing, you just brought us into a hole to die. You said you were a leader. Lead us to some supplies."

"I'm trying to hack the local grid to find a cache," Adriano snapped. "Give me a second."

"We don't have seconds," Elias retorted, stepping closer. "Sofia, you’re the soldier. Tell him. This plan is a death trap."

Sofia stood by the entrance, eyes fixed on the tunnel. "He’s doing his best, Elias. But he’s right about one thing. We’re at a breaking point."

"I have a suggestion," Elias said, his voice smooth and dangerous. "We cut the dead weight. We focus our resources on the people who can actually fight. The woman with the kid? The elderly lady? They’re just consuming energy we don't have."

The room went silent. Mrs. Gable, huddled in the corner, let out a soft, shuddering sob.

Adriano stood up, his chair clattering to the floor. "We aren't leaving anyone behind."

"It’s not personal, kid," Elias said, shrugging. "It’s math. You’re an accountant, right? Balance the ledger."

"I said no," Adriano shouted, his voice echoing.

"You’re going to get us all killed," Sofia whispered, her eyes meeting his. She looked tired, a bone-deep exhaustion that bordered on apathy. "Elias is right about the resources, Adriano. We can’t feed everyone. If we don't make a hard choice now, the system will make it for us."

"So that’s it?" Adriano stared at her, betrayed. "You’re siding with him?"

"I’m siding with survival," Sofia said. "I didn't come this far to starve to death in a basement because you wanted to play the saint."

Adriano looked at his interface, his heart sinking. The golden barrier was dimming, pulsing in rhythm with his weakening resolve. The system was watching, judging, waiting.

[ SYSTEM ALERT: CALORIC DEFICIT DETECTED ]

[ RESOURCE ALLOCATION REQUIRED ]

"You want me to pick who survives?" Adriano asked, his voice dead.

"I want you to be realistic," Sofia said.

Before Adriano could respond, the entire tunnel shuddered. The walls groaned, and a deep, mechanical voice boomed from every speaker in the subterranean complex, louder and more distorted than before.

"Attention, Citizens," the voice echoed, vibrating the marrow in their bones. "The audit has concluded. The efficiency threshold has not been met. Initiating Purge event: Zero-Four-Hundred."

"What does that mean?" Jax screamed, scrambling to his feet.

"It means," Adriano said, looking at the blinking red clock that had appeared on every wall in the station, "they aren't coming to hunt us anymore. They’re coming to delete the sector."

The room descended into chaos. People began to shove, to scream, to grab for supplies. Adriano stood in the middle of it all, the interface spinning in front of his eyes.

[ EVENT: PURGE ]

[ DURATION: 10 MINUTES ]

[ OBJECTIVE: ELIMINATE ALL UNREGISTERED ASSETS ]

"Adriano, what do we do?" Sofia grabbed his arm, her composure finally shattering.

He looked at the crowd, then at the clock. Ten minutes.

"We stop being the accountant," Adriano said, his eyes glowing with a cold, terrifying intensity. "We stop playing by their rules. If they want to delete us, we’ll delete them first."

He reached out and, for the first time, didn't try to build a wall. He reached for the power grid, aiming for the overload.

"Everyone, get to the vents!" he roared. "I’m blowing this station!"

"You'll kill yourself!" Sofia yelled.

"Maybe," Adriano whispered, his finger poised over the command. "But I'm taking their goddamn ledger with me."

His eyes were not glowing anymore, but they retained a predatory, crystalline clarity that sent shivers down Adriano’s spine."Who are you?" Adriano shouted, his voice cracking. "What do you mean, 'something worse'?"The boy didn't move. He simply tilted his head, his hands tucked deep into the pockets of his tattered jacket. "You broke the lock, Accountant. The floor felt wrong—slick and uneven. "The sync is coming. If we don't find that terminal, we’re part of the purge.""I know," she murmured, nudging him toward the emergency stairwell. "Stay low.
