Brandon's reply came thirty seconds later.
Natalie pressed the phone to her ear the moment the call connected, her voice a frantic whisper.
"Brandon, he knows your name. He asked me straight to my face. He's never done that before. Something is different about him."
"So?" Brandon's voice on the other end was loose, unbothered, like she had just told him the weather forecast.
"So? That's all you have to say?" Natalie's grip tightened around the phone. "He refused the divorce, Brandon. He's not signing off. Do you understand what that means?"
"It means he's throwing a tantrum. He'll calm down."
"This isn't a tantrum. You didn't see the way he looked at me. He's never looked at me like that before. Not in six years." Her voice was climbing, her composure unraveling thread by thread. "What if he saw us? What if he followed me to the school yesterday?"
"You're overthinking it." Brandon yawned. She could actually hear him yawn. "Even if he suspects something, what's he going to do? The man can barely afford gas for his car. He doesn't have the money or the connections to cause any real problems."
"Brandon, I'm serious. I need you to take this seriously."
"And I need you to calm down." His tone shifted from careless to irritated in half a second. "I just got out of my own divorce, Natalie. The last thing I need right now is you calling me in the middle of the night having a breakdown over your broke husband."
The words hit her like cold water. She pulled the phone away from her ear and stared at it, her mouth slightly open.
"Are you going to abandon me again?" Her voice dropped low, trembling at the edges. "Because that's exactly what you did last time. You walked out on me and Mason when he was barely a year old. You disappeared for three years without a single phone call. And the only reason I married Caleb in the first place was because you left me with nothing."
"Natalie."
"No. You don't get to do this again." Tears had formed in the corners of her eyes, but her jaw was set hard. "I spent six years married to a man I don't love, pretending to be happy, squeezing every dollar out of him to survive. I did that because you promised me you would come back. And now you're sitting there telling me to calm down?"
"I said I'd handle it."
"Handle it how?"
"I'll figure something out. Just give me a few days." His voice had gone flat. Not reassuring. Not warm. Just flat, the way you talk to someone whose problem you plan to deal with after lunch. "I'll call you tomorrow."
He hung up.
Natalie stared at the dark screen for a long time. Her lower lip trembled once, then she pressed it flat, wiped her eyes with the back of her hand, and slipped the phone into her pocket.
In the second bedroom, Caleb heard nothing. The walls were thin, but Natalie had stepped into the master bathroom at the far end of the hall to make her call. He was lying on the narrow mattress, scrolling through his prepaid phone, when a message from Greg Dunbar appeared.
"Preliminary results on the plate. Brandon Cole Whitfield. Age 38. Owner of a small logistics company called Whitfield Transit. Annual revenue under two million. Married in 2015, divorced finalized four months ago. Current address: 2240 Pinecrest Lane, unit 7B. Still digging on the connection timeline with your wife. More within 48 hours."
Caleb read the message twice.
Married in 2015. Divorced four months ago.
Mason was born in 2021. Which meant Brandon had been married to another woman the entire time he was sleeping with Natalie. And Natalie had married Caleb in 2020, one year before Mason was born, which meant she had gotten pregnant with Brandon's child while already married to Caleb.
But the timeline told him something else too. Something that sank into his stomach like a stone dropping into deep water.
Brandon had been with Natalie before Caleb ever entered the picture. He had left her. She got desperate. She married Caleb as a backup plan. And the moment Brandon came crawling back, she was ready to throw Caleb away like a used napkin.
She had never loved him. Not for a single day of their marriage. He was a paycheck with a pulse, nothing more.
Caleb turned off the phone, set it on the nightstand, and closed his eyes. For the first time in days, his mind was perfectly still. The anger was there, but it had been pressed into something cold and heavy, like a bar of iron sitting at the bottom of his chest. It would stay there, waiting, until the time was right.
He slept better than he had in years.
The next morning, he was at the Eastbrook Police Station by 8:15.
Owen Park's office was on the third floor, a glass walled corner room that looked out over the parking lot. Owen was already at his desk when Caleb knocked, a cup of coffee in one hand and a stack of case files in the other. He looked up and his face broke into a grin.
"Look who finally decided to visit me at work." Owen stood up and pulled Caleb into a one armed hug. "Get in here. You want coffee? It tastes like motor oil but it'll wake you up."
"I'm good." Caleb sat down in the chair across from the desk.
Owen settled back into his seat and studied his friend's face. The grin faded. "You look like you haven't slept in a week. Is this about the debts? Because I told you, if you need cash to clear some of them, I can move some money around. It's not a problem."
"It's not about the debts."
"Then what? The lawyer didn't work out? Victoria can be intense, but she's the best there is."
"Victoria's fine. She's handling everything." Caleb leaned forward and rested his elbows on his knees. "I need to ask you something, Owen. And I need you to answer me as a cop, not as my friend."
Owen's expression shifted. He set his coffee down and gave Caleb his full attention. "Alright. Talk to me."
"Natalie cheated on me." Caleb said the words without flinching. "She's been seeing another man. His name is Brandon Whitfield. He owns a small logistics company. And the boy, Mason, he's not my son."
The silence in the office lasted a full ten seconds. Owen's mouth opened, then closed, then opened again.
"Are you sure?"
"I got a paternity test done. Results came back yesterday. Zero percent." Caleb's voice was steady, but his eyes were not. "She's been lying to me since before we got married, Owen. She married me because Brandon walked out on her, and now that he's back, she wants to dump me and take everything I've got."
Owen exhaled slowly through his nose and ran both hands over his face. "How long has this been going on?"
"Years. I don't have the exact timeline yet, but my PI is working on it."
"Okay." Owen straightened up, his cop instincts taking over. "What do you want to do about it? Legally, I mean."
"I want to take her to court. I want to sue her for everything she's done to me. What do I need?"
Owen leaned back and tapped his index finger against the desk. "Criminal charges are going to be tough. Adultery isn't criminal in this state, and even paternity fraud is a gray area in criminal court. But a civil lawsuit? That's very doable."
"What would I need for a civil case?"
"Three things." Owen held up his fingers one at a time. "First, DNA evidence proving the child isn't yours. You already have that. Second, documentation of every cent you spent raising that boy. School fees, medical bills, clothes, food, extracurriculars, all of it. If you kept receipts or bank statements, that's gold."
"I kept everything. Every single transaction."
"Good. Third, and this is the hard part, you need evidence of intentional deception. Proof that she knowingly lied about the child's paternity and used that lie to extract financial support from you. Text messages, emails, anything where she admits or implies she knew the child wasn't yours."
"I don't have that yet."
"Then you need to get it." Owen looked at him seriously. "Without the deception element, all you've got is a refund case. With it, you've got fraud. And fraud carries real consequences."
"I'll get it." Caleb nodded slowly. "I'm not in any rush. I've already blocked the divorce. She's not going anywhere, and neither am I. I have all the time in the world."
Owen studied his friend's face for a long moment. There was something different about Caleb. Something behind the exhaustion and the pain that had not been there a week ago. A stillness. A certainty. Owen could not put his finger on it, but the broke, beaten down man who had asked him for a lawyer's number three days ago was not the same man sitting in front of him right now.
"I'll help you however I can. You know that." Owen's voice was quieter now. "But I gotta say, Caleb, I never saw this coming. Not from Natalie."
"Neither did I."
Owen leaned back in his chair and stared at the ceiling, shaking his head slowly. His expression carried something heavy, something that went beyond professional sympathy into real, personal disbelief.
"You know what gets me? After everything that happened between you and Lily back then, the way you two ended things, the way neither of you wanted to walk away." He looked at Caleb with eyes full of something close to grief. "I really believed Natalie was the one who would stay by your side for the rest of your life. I thought she was your second chance."
Caleb said nothing for a long time. The name Lily moved through his chest like a ghost passing through a wall, there and gone before he could catch it.
"Turns out she was just keeping the seat warm." His voice was barely a whisper. "Until the man she actually wanted came back for her."
Owen closed his eyes and let out a long, slow breath. "What a world we live in, brother. What a world."

Chapter 8: The Color of Betrayal
The dealership had detailed the car until it gleamed like a mirror. Caleb pulled out of the lot at 2:15, which gave him just enough time to make it to Westbrook Elementary before the final bell.He parked right at the front gate this time. No hiding across the street. No watching from the shadows. When Mason walked out of the building with his backpack dragging on the ground, the boy stopped dead in his tracks and stared at the black sedan like it had fallen out of the sky."Is this yours?" Mason's mouth hung open as he walked around the car in a slow circle, running his fingers along the fender."Get in." Caleb opened the back door for him.Mason climbed inside and immediately started touching everything. The leather seats, the sunroof button, the armrest that folded down with a cup holder built into it. His eyes were wide and bright, the way only a five year old's can be when confronted with something shiny and new."Did you buy a new car?" Mason looked at him through the rearview m
Chapter 7: The Taste of Money
Owen leaned back in his chair and let the silence sit for a moment. The name Lily Ashford was still hanging between them like smoke that refused to clear."Life's unpredictable, isn't it?" Caleb finally spoke, his voice quiet. "Three days ago I was a guy working three jobs who couldn't afford new shoes. Now I've got a billion dollars in a wallet, a wife who's been lying to me since day one, and a son who isn't mine.""And your ex just moved back to town." Owen added it like a footnote."Yeah. And that." Caleb rubbed the back of his neck and stared at the floor tiles. "But I'm done feeling sorry for myself, Owen. Whatever happens next, I'm going to live my life well. On my own terms. For the first time in six years."Owen watched him for a long beat. Then he leaned forward, his elbows on the desk, his voice dropping lower."What about Lily?"Caleb looked up."Have you thought about going back to her?" Owen's expression was careful, measured, like a man defusing a wire he wasn't sure wa

Chapter 5: Cracks in the Mask
The name hung in the air like a grenade with the pin pulled.Natalie's face went through three expressions in two seconds. Shock. Confusion. And then something she covered so fast that most people would have missed it entirely. Fear."Who?" Her voice came out a full beat too late."Brandon." Caleb repeated the name slowly, watching every muscle in her face. "I asked you a simple question, Natalie. Who is Brandon?"Natalie shifted Mason higher on her hip and let out a short laugh. It was the kind of laugh people use when they are buying time. "I have no idea what you're talking about. I don't know any Brandon.""You sure about that?""Yes, I'm sure." Her chin lifted. "Where is this coming from? Are you going through my phone now? Is that what this is?"Caleb said nothing. He just looked at her. The silence stretched for five seconds, then ten, and Natalie's composure began to crack at the edges like paint peeling off a wall."You know what, I'm not doing this." She set Mason down and p

Victoria walked him to the elevator, her heels clicking in rhythm with every word."The first batch of funds should clear within five days." She pressed the down button and turned to face him. "But there's one thing you'll need to handle personally. The initial Bitcoin cash out requires your authorization on site. You'll need to fly to the Caymans before we can move anything.""How soon?""Within the week, ideally. The shell company will be registered by Wednesday. After that, it's just your signature and a biometric confirmation at the offshore bank." She folded her arms and looked at him with that sharp, calculating stare. "Can you make the trip without raising suspicion?""Nobody's watching me, Ms. Sloane." Caleb stepped into the elevator. "Nobody's been watching me for a long time.""Good. Keep it that way." Victoria held the door with one hand. "I'll have my assistant send you the flight details tonight. And Mr. Hayes? Don't use your main phone for any of our communications. Buy
Chapter 3: Strangers Under One Roof
The front door opened at 7:14 in the morning.Caleb heard them before he saw them. Mason's sneakers squeaking on the tile. Natalie's heels clicking behind him. The smell of expensive cologne that did not belong to anyone who lived in this house drifting in with them like a ghost. He was crouched by the hallway closet, filling a duffel bag with clothes, toiletries, and a few items he had carefully selected over the past hour. Among them, tucked inside a ziplock bag at the bottom, was a juice box Mason had been drinking from last night before they left. Still had the boy's saliva on the straw. Right next to it, wrapped in a tissue, was a strand of his own hair.Natalie stopped in the doorway and stared at him. Her brow furrowed, not with concern, but with the kind of confusion a person shows when their furniture has been rearranged without permission."Why are you here?" Her voice carried that familiar flat tone. Not warm, not cruel, just transactional."I live here. For two more days,
