CHAPTER 17
"No."Provos shook one paw."First we negotiate compensation."I blinked."Compensation?""Three meals a day."One claw extended."Fresh water."A second claw."A suitable female companion at least twice a week."A third."No less than ten minutes of petting every evening."Another claw."And a sleeping place near your source of necro-energy."He thought for a moment."Given our current circumstances, we may temporarily invoke the force majeure clause and accept partial fulfillment of contractual obligations."He looked pleased with himself."Once conditions improve, however, both parties shall perform all duties in full."He looked straight at me."So... Do we have an agreement?"I couldn't help laughing."And what exactly do I get in return? And while we're at it, explain what this patronage business actually was.""I'll answer the second question first."Vopros sat with all the dignity of a professor beginning a lecture."Patronage is essentially this arrangement..."He smiled."...
CHAPTER 16
He sat down and wrapped his tail around his paws."Close your eye-e-es. Then focus on your desire to open the menu. That's what worked for me when I first arrived he-e-ere."I frowned. It sounded ridiculous. And yet It also sounded strangely familiar. The dream. Right.I closed my eyes and concentrated.Open the menu. The response was instantaneous. A translucent interface bloomed across my vision."What the hell?!""Please don't yell," Vopros said, flattening his ears. "I happen to have very sensitive hearing."I stared in disbelief. The interface hovered in front of me, perfectly clear yet somehow transparent. I could still see the ruined house around it as though the menu existed in a different layer of reality.Tabs lined the top.Stats.Skills.Abilities.Exactly like the ones I'd seen in my dream. But one window immediately stole my attention.Mandatory Class AssignedClass: Servant of DeathClass Change: ImpossibleA chill crawled down my spine."What... is this?""The locals c
CHAPTER 15
About an hour later, two ruined buildings emerged from the gray wasteland. By my estimate, I'd covered another five kilometers. Adding that to the ten or so I'd walked before the darkness tried to lure me away, I was finally putting some real distance between myself and the Hornless Woman's estate."What do you think, Koshka?"The cat answered the only way he ever did. He walked straight toward the ruins.I shrugged and followed. Sometimes a ruin was just... a ruin. Unfortunately, someone else had gotten there long before me. Anything useful had been stripped clean. Not a scrap of metal remained. Not even a bent nail.I couldn't help thinking that throwing my dagger into that filthy outhouse had been an incredibly expensive mistake. Metal was worth a fortune in this world. Near one of the houses stood a well, half-buried beneath windblown sand.I looked inside anyway.Dry. Not even damp.Of course.I let out a weary sigh and sat on an old chopping block. Fishing a pack of Churchills f
CHAPTER 14
I stared at the unlocked screen in disbelief. No way.The first thing I did was head straight into Settings and register my own fingerprints. If Strelnikov was alive, he wasn't coming back anytime soon. And if he wasn't...Well.The phone was mine until the battery died.I'd never owned one of Nokia's flagship models before. Those things cost more than I earned in six months. No cellular signal. No GPS.Hardly surprising.Different world and all.I hadn't expected to call the police anyway. Instead, I opened Telegram and started reading Strelnikov's chats, hoping to figure out who'd dragged me into this nightmare. There was someone simply labeled Boss.Orders came from him. Status reports went back to him. Then there was Svetlana.Apparently the dispatcher. From the look of things, she had connections inside the authorities. She'd even attached a file containing a detailed dossier on me.The bastards. They were all in bed together. One of Svetlana’s latest messages caught my eye.‘Bet
CHAPTER 13
I was still neck-deep in shit, except now Yuri wasn't here anymore... what was his last name? Streltsov? Something like that. Ah, right—Strelnikov.Yeah.Now I was completely on my own.I cracked the toilet door open and peeked into the hallway. The armed guards were gone. Good. There was a decent chance they'd gone to free their Hornless Mistress, which meant I needed to move before they came back.I shifted my grip on the wooden mallet and stepped into the corridor. It was a pathetic excuse for a weapon, but at least I knew how to use it. Give me a sword or a spear, and I'd probably end up stabbing myself by accident. It happens more often than you'd think—even to medieval reenactors.Back when I worked EMS, we picked up a guy who'd managed exactly that. Well, not stabbed himself, but close enough. He'd taken a swing at a target with some enormous sword—I couldn't tell you what kind—and the blade had rebounded straight into his forehead. Luckily, it was blunt, as the law required. E
CHAPTER 12
A second later..."Ha!"The victory shout slipped out before I could stop it. I immediately clamped my mouth shut. The horned woman lay face-first on the floor.And... No horns. They'd gone flying when I hit her. Just a headband.Seriously?I'd been worrying about actual demons. Turns out she'd bought her horns from the costume department.I looked nervously at the corpse working the grindstone. He kept sharpening the needles. Didn't even glance our way.Either he was incredibly disciplined or incredibly stupid. Maybe both. I wasn't about to complain.I crouched beside the unconscious woman.Despite what movies liked to pretend, knocking someone out wasn't a reliable way to solve your problems. If a person stayed unconscious for more than a few minutes, chances were you'd caused a serious brain injury. Possibly fatal. Possibly permanent. Anything longer than that, assuming they survived, was edging into coma territory.Reality wasn't Hollywood. One clean hit didn't buy you an afternoo
