The heavy steel gates of Ironwood Federal Penitentiary ground open with a low, metallic groan.
Outside the perimeter fence, flashing red-and-blue cruisers lined the tarmac as far as the eye could see. Overhead, five unmarked white helicopters held a tight hovering formation, their rotor wash whipping across the asphalt.
The rear door of the lead command vehicle swung open, and a man in his late thirties stepped out, two silver stars gleaming on the shoulders of his dress uniform. He walked straight up to Cole Mercer, stopped two paces away, and snapped a crisp salute.
The lazy, half-bored slouch vanished from Cole’s posture in an instant. His spine locked, his heels clicked together, and he returned the salute with textbook precision.
Brigadier General Victor Hale had a square, chiseled jaw and eyes that carried the natural authority of high command. He reached out, clapped a heavy hand on Cole’s shoulder, and let out a rough sigh. “Talon. At the end of the day, this is on me. I failed you as your commanding officer. Six years in a cage… you shouldn’t have had to pay that price.”
Victor Hale was the architect and founding commander of Task Force Wraith, a man whose word carried weight in the highest corridors of the Pentagon. Only Cole Mercer could have brought him to Ironwood in person.
Cole flashed a crooked, easy grin. “Six years of three hots and a cot? I did just fine, sir. Hell, I ought to be thanking you. If you hadn’t pulled strings to extradite me, I’d have been rotting in an unmarked grave overseas six years ago.”
Six years back, Cole had led Task Force Wraith on a Tier-One black op. Halfway through the insertion, compromised intelligence walked them straight into an ambush. Thirty operators didn’t make it home. They weren’t just men under his command—they were his brothers.
Blinded by grief and fury, Cole had gone rogue and assaulted the enemy stronghold solo. He left nothing breathing in his wake. Fifteen surviving hostiles, terrified out of their minds by the one-man slaughter, fled across the border under the cover of darkness. Cole hunted them across the line and put thirteen of them in the ground before a foreign mechanized battalion surrounded him as he closed in on the final two.
An international military tribunal had been ready to put him in front of a firing squad. Only Victor’s relentless back-channel intervention got him extradited stateside, where a closed-door court-martial pled the charges down to five years for involuntary manslaughter.
Victor’s expression darkened. “Those last two survivors haven’t given up. According to fresh agency intercepts, they’re regrouping—and they’re looking to finish what they started.” He paused, fixing Cole with an expectant stare. Task Force Wraith was a spear, and Talon was its point. Without him, the unit didn’t carry half the deterrence it used to.
Cole knew exactly what his old boss was asking. He shook his head slowly. “I’m done, Victor. All I want now is a quiet life. Wraith is a damn fine unit. They’ll manage without me.”
Victor gave a wry, helpless smile. “Even if you’re walking away from the unit, you still owe your two old mentors a visit. They’ve been asking about you.”
Cole had been trained by two living legends in the covert world: one was known simply as The Surgeon, the undisputed pioneer of battlefield trauma medicine and toxicology; the other was The Ghost, the deadliest close-quarters combat instructor ever to walk the earth. Under their tutelage, Cole had become a one-in-a-million operative—equally capable of snatching a man back from clinical death or stopping his heart with a single strike.
After a brief silence, Cole nodded. “Give me a little time to get settled. I’ll pay my respects to both of them.”
Victor sighed, realizing he wasn’t going to change Cole’s mind today. He reached into his coat and held out a thick cream envelope. “An old mentor of mine has been in failing health lately. Do me a favor and check in on him for me. Consider this your letter of introduction.”
Cole took the envelope, slipped it into his canvas duffel, and turned to walk away without looking back. Victor stood by the cruiser for a long time, watching that lone figure disappear down the road before letting out a quiet, heavy breath.
By dusk, Cole stepped off a long-haul bus at the Havenport Transit Terminal.
A man in a sharp, tailored suit spotted him through the crowd and hurried over with a wide grin. “Cole! Thank God you’re finally out!”
Cole’s face lit up. He dropped his bag and pulled the man into a bone-crushing bear hug. “Nate, I told you on the phone you didn’t need to come pick me up.”
Nathan Mercer was Cole’s older brother. Years ago, the Mercers had been a respectable, moderately wealthy local family. Back then, Cole had been young, hot-blooded, and reckless. He had walked into a trap that saddled him with a five-million-dollar debt—a catastrophic blow that sent the family business into freefall. While the Mercers were teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, their parents died in a highway pileup.
Crushed from all sides, Nathan had used his last connections to ship Cole off to the military to keep him safe from the creditors. Throughout eight years of combat deployments and prison time, guilt had eaten at Cole every single day. Now that he was back, he was going to spend the rest of his life making it up to his brother.
Nathan thumped a fist against Cole’s chest, his eyes bright. “Shut up, kid. You’re talking to your brother like a stranger.”
After a few minutes of catching up, Nathan led him to a clean black Audi Q5 in the lot. As they pulled into traffic, Nathan couldn’t stop smiling. “Tonight, it’s just the two of us. We’re drinking until neither of us can stand.”
Ever since Cole’s conviction had been classified under military seal, Nathan hadn’t been allowed a single visitation. It had been eight full years since he’d laid eyes on his little brother.
“You got it,” Cole said, nodding firmly. “Until we can’t stand.”
Glancing at Nathan’s designer suit and the luxury SUV, Cole felt some of the weight in his chest ease. Eight years had passed, and it looked like Nathan had managed to dig himself out of the wreckage and build a solid life.
Twenty minutes later, the Audi turned through the gates of an upscale residential enclave and pulled into the driveway of a detached two-story villa. Nathan popped the trunk, grabbed two bottles of vintage cabernet, and led Cole up to the front door.
The moment the door swung open, Cole froze on the threshold.
On the Italian leather sofa in the living room sat a striking, porcelain-skinned blonde with icy, aristocratic features. She was staring at the two of them with undisguised hostility. Beside her sat a little girl, no older than four or five, her face paper-white. Even with the pallor, she had Nathan’s eyes and nose.
Nathan’s entire body went rigid. His smile vanished, replaced by a nervous stammer. “V-Victoria… honey, I thought you were out of town on a business trip?”
Honey? Cole blinked. Nathan was married? Yet judging by the way his brother’s shoulders hunched, he was terrified of his own wife.
Cole quickly stepped forward with a polite nod. “Good evening, ma’am. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
Victoria Sterling didn’t even bother standing. “My house doesn’t welcome your kind,” she said, her voice cutting through the room like broken glass. “Turn around and get out.”
A flash of anger crossed Nathan’s eyes. “Victoria, he’s my blood brother!”
Victoria crossed her arms over her chest, her lips curling into a sneer. “So what? He’s a convicted killer fresh out of federal prison.”
A vein throbbed on Nathan’s forehead. He clenched his jaw so hard his teeth ground together, yet he didn’t dare snap back.
Victoria gave him a sidelong glance and laughed coldly. “What’s with the glare, Nathan? Thinking about raising a hand to me? Don’t forget what you are—a charity case who married into the Sterling family. A pathetic freeloader who sold his own last name for five million dollars.”
Cole’s pupils contracted sharply.
In that single sentence, the pieces clicked into place. The designer suit, the Audi, the cleared five-million-dollar debt—Nathan hadn’t built a fortune. He had signed himself over to the Sterlings in a humiliating marriage contract to buy Cole’s freedom. Growing up, Nathan had always been the proudest man Cole knew, constantly telling him that a man without a spine wasn’t a man at all. And yet, he had traded away every ounce of his dignity for his younger brother.
Cole’s throat tightened until he could barely breathe.
Nathan’s voice was low and strained. “I’ve worked my ass off at your company for years, Victoria. Even if you don’t respect me, I’ve earned my keep. Asking to let my brother crash here for a few days isn’t crossing the line.”
Victoria’s temper flared instantly. “Did I give you the impression you get a vote around here? This villa is in my name! Your signature isn’t anywhere on the deed. Forget your ex-con brother—I can throw you out on the street whenever I feel like it!”
Seeing the argument escalating, Cole stepped in and laid a steadying hand on his brother’s arm. “Nate, it’s fine. I’ll grab a motel room. Honestly, after roughing it for so many years, a place this fancy would just keep me awake at night.”
Nathan stared at the floor, burning with shame. “No, Cole. You’re staying right here tonight. Let me talk to your sister-in-law.” He walked over to the sofa, lowering his voice to plead with her.
Slap!
Victoria slammed her open palm against the glass coffee table and stood up. “A murderer and a spineless leech—both of you get the hell out of my sight!”
Nathan’s neck flushed crimson. “Victoria, you can insult me all day long, but you will not talk about my brother like that!”
Infuriated, Victoria drew back her hand to slap him across the face.
“Mommy…”
Before her palm could connect, a choked whimper came from the sofa. Little Lily suddenly pitched forward, dark blood spilling from her nose and lips as her tiny body went into violent convulsions.

Cole stopped ten feet from the booth, his eyes locking onto Travis like twin laser sights. “Clean out your mouth while you still can.”Julian Hayes had already lost three teeth for running his mouth about Nathan yesterday. Cole had come to this company to help his brother stand tall, not to start a brawl on his first morning, but his patience had a hard limit. With his cousin Tanya backing him up in HR, Travis had been the resident bully of the security department for a year, and he wasn’t about to get stared down by a rookie. He blew a puff of smoke toward Cole’s face and sneered. “Or what, newbie? You gonna take a swing at me?”Cole’s right hand slowly curled into a fist, a glacial, murderous chill surfacing in his eyes. The cigarette between Travis’s lips suddenly trembled. Without knowing why, the hairs on the back of his neck stood straight up, as if he had just stepped into the cage of a starving Siberian tiger. Those eyes weren’t human—they were dead, pitiless, and completely i

Back in Room 104 of the staff dormitories, Cole took a quick hot shower and stepped out of the bathroom wearing only a pair of loose board shorts, toweling his hair dry. His brow remained slightly furrowed as he replayed Elena Cross’s close-quarters combinations in his head. Something about her footwork and the angle of her throat strikes felt naggingly familiar, though he couldn’t quite place where he’d seen that lineage before.Bang! Bang! Bang!Frantic pounding suddenly rattled his door.Cole tossed the towel aside, threw an unbuttoned dress shirt over his shoulders, and pulled the door open. For a second, he just blinked.Standing in the hallway was a stunning young woman in her early twenties, wearing nothing but a thin, violet silk camisole nightgown. Her face was flushed with panic, and one delicate spaghetti strap had slipped off her shoulder, exposing creamy, porcelain skin under the fluorescent hall light.Even with Cole’s iron discipline, his throat went slightly dry.Befor
Chapter 006
Lena and Briggs stared at the armchair in tense anticipation.Slowly, General Kane placed his hands on the armrests and stood up. Instead of swaying, he planted his feet shoulder-width apart, rolled his shoulders, and smoothly launched into a crisp, ten-minute close-quarters combat conditioning drill—his strikes snapping through the air with steady, balanced power.By the time he finished and exhaled a long breath, his cheeks were flushed with healthy color and his stance was rock-solid.Lena’s dark eyes widened, a new layer of respect replacing her earlier curiosity as she looked at Cole.Alistair threw his head back and laughed, his voice booming through the living room with renewed vigor. “No wonder they call The Surgeon a miracle worker! His disciple really inherited the old man’s hands!”Both Lena and Briggs froze. He’s The Surgeon’s apprentice? In the upper echelons of the intelligence and military worlds, The Surgeon was a phantom—a medical savant whom heads of state begged for
Chapter 005
The woman in the crimson dress glanced sideways at Cole, a spark of genuine intrigue flickering in her dark eyes. General Kane didn’t entertain ordinary guests, and clearly, this young man was anything but ordinary. Everyone in Havenport knew the Hayes family was backed by Commissioner Pendelton, yet Cole had just put the Hayes heir on the pavement without a second thought.Cole turned back to her, his expression softening into polite composure. “Sorry you had to see that, ma’am.”She offered a faint, captivating smile. “Not at all. I’m Elena Cross. Most people around here just call me Lena.”As Cole followed Lena through the wrought-iron gates, Julian clawed his way off the asphalt, spitting blood as he glared at their retreating backs. “Cole Mercer… you asked for this. You’re a dead man.” He yanked the door of the Rolls-Royce open and threw himself into the back seat. The driver hesitated, looking into the rearview mirror. “M-Mr. Julian… aren’t we still going in to see Commissioner
Chapter 004
Oakhaven Crest sat nestled in the wooded hills northwest of Havenport—the most exclusive gated enclave in the entire metropolitan area.Money alone couldn’t buy a deed inside those walls; even Havenport’s wealthiest real estate moguls couldn’t get past the outer perimeter. The residents of Oakhaven Crest were retired four-star generals, federal power brokers, and old-money kingmakers.Stepping out of a cab near the entrance, Cole immediately noticed the sentries posted at the main guardhouse. They stood like cast-iron statues, backs ramrod straight, eyes sweeping the approach with cold, mechanical precision. Even from fifty feet away, Cole could feel the unmistakable edge rolling off them—the quiet, lethal aura of men who had walked through blood and gunsmoke and come out the other side.Screeech!Tires howled against the asphalt right behind him. A gloss-black Rolls-Royce Phantom locked its brakes, coming to a dead stop less than two feet from the back of Cole’s knees.Cole didn’t ev
Chapter 003
Moving with lightning reflexes, Cole snatched the wastebasket from beside the sofa and tilted Lily’s chin down so she wouldn’t aspirate. The blood hitting the bin was thick and tar-black, mixed with stomach acid and necrotic residue that filled the living room with a sharp, putrid stench.Victoria turned pale, clutching her chest. “W-What’s happening to her now?!”“That’s the purge,” Cole said evenly. “The dead hemophages and metabolic toxins were flushed through her gastric lining. Her bloodstream is clean now.”He pulled a handful of tissues from the box on the coffee table and gently wiped the corners of his niece’s mouth.Nathan stared at the wastebasket in disbelief. “That’s… that’s it? She’s cured?” For three months, they had flown in top specialists from across the country, only to be told to prepare for a funeral. Yet Cole had turned her around in less than fifteen minutes. Who the hell would believe it if they hadn’t seen it with their own eyes?“The immediate crisis is over,
