Chapter 2: The Day the Sky Broke Part 2

The bed was ripped from the floor as if it weighed nothing. Xander rolled desperately to the side, hitting the wall. The monster dug its claws into the mattress, tearing through the foam and springs with ease. Its tentacles stretched toward him.

One of them hit his left arm.

The pain was indescribable.

It was as if a thousand hot needles had pierced his flesh at once. Xander screamed as the tentacle sucked blood directly from his veins. He felt his strength being drained in a matter of seconds.

Let go! Let go, damn it!

With his right hand, he grabbed the metal lamp from the bedside table and struck the creature on the head with all his might. The lamp bent in half. The monster didn't even seem to feel it.

Another tentacle wrapped around her leg. The third came toward her neck.

Xander was being lifted off the ground. His frail body offered no resistance. He saw his own blood trickling down the creature's tentacles, being greedily absorbed. His vision began to darken.

"That's it. I'm going to die here. Devoured by a mutant alien dog. What a pathetic end."

As the Blood Leech Hound's main mouth opened, revealing triple rows of teeth, Xander felt a strange calm wash over him. Acceptance. It was the end.

That's when everything stopped.

Time did not stop. But something within him awakened.

A voice—cold, mechanical, infinitely superior—resounded directly in his mind and around him at the same time:

[Initializing Nexus Administrator System…]

[Overwriting Harvesters' harvesting protocols... Success.]

[Welcome, Administrator Xander Voss.]

A translucent blue screen, far sharper and more elegant than the monsters' red ones, appeared before his eyes. Even while his body was being drained, the screen was perfectly visible.

[Administrator's Initial Survival Pack has been granted.]

The tentacle that was sucking at his neck loosened for a fraction of a second, as if the monster itself had sensed that something was terribly wrong.

Xander didn't think. He simply acted.

With a trembling hand, he mentally selected all 50 points and played them into...StrengthandAgility(25 each). His body burned as if it had been plunged into lava. Muscles that had never existed before began to form on his arms and legs. His bones cracked, realigning themselves.

He extended his right hand.

[Nexus Rookie Sword materialized.]

A silver-bladed sword with pulsating blue veins appeared in his hand. It was no ordinary sword. It seemed alive.

The Blood Leech Hound roared and tightened its tentacles even further, trying to finish the job.

Xander, with a strength he had never possessed in his life, spun his body in the air and brought the sword down with all his might.

He aimed for the creature's neck.

[Critical Hit!]

[Damage multiplied by 7 due to hitting a vital point + first kill bonus + Administrator bonus!]

The blade sliced through the reinforced carapace like hot butter. The Blood Leech Hound's head flew across the room, slamming against the wall with a wet thud. The decapitated body convulsed, its tentacles thrashing wildly before collapsing inertly to the floor, releasing Xander.

He collapsed to his knees, gasping for air, covered in blood—part of him, part of the monster.

For almost a full minute, the only sound in the room was her heavy breathing.

Then, a new screen appeared, golden this time:

Congratulations, Administrator!

[You killed your first enemy: Blood Leech Hound (Level 8).]

[Experience awarded: 680 points.]

[You've leveled up to Level 1!]

Xander blinked several times. His body trembled. Not from fear this time. It was something different. Adrenaline. Euphoria. Fear mixed with a hunger he had never felt before.

He looked at the sword in his hand. Then at the corpse of the creature that had almost killed him. And finally at the blue screens floating before him.

In a hoarse voice, almost a whisper, he said:

— Status.

The main screen opened before him, shining with a light that seemed to promise the whole world.

Xander looked at the numbers. Then he looked at his arms. The muscles that had previously been nonexistent were now visibly defined, veins pulsing strongly. He felt… alive. For the first time in his life, he felt dangerous.

A slow, almost predatory smile formed on his lips as he gazed out the broken window. Outside, the world still burned. Portals continued to unleash monsters. Screams still echoed.

But something had changed irreversibly.

He gripped the sword hilt tighter.

"So this is how it begins…" he murmured, his eyes gleaming with a mixture of madness, ambition, and relief. "Fine. If the world has become a game… then I'm going to play to win. And I'm going to win badly."

[Daily Administrator Mission generated!]

The golden screen flickered before him, promising that this was only the beginning. Xander Voss, the scrawny, nerdy young man who had nearly died less than five minutes ago, chuckled softly as the Blood Leech Hound's blood still dripped from his sword. The day the sky broke wasn't the end of humanity. For him, it was the first day of his ascension.
