Chapter 5: The Girl Who Shouldn't Be Here Yet

He found her three weeks later, at the tree line past the orphanage's eastern fields, and the moment he saw her, every calculation he'd built about the shape of this timeline came apart at once.

She looked perhaps ten or eleven, though something about her stillness suggested an age that didn't map onto human years at all. Reddish hair, matted with forest debris. Bare feet despite the cold. And, most impossibly, a faint ripple of fox-shaped shadow that didn't quite align with her human shape whenever she moved too fast for the eye to fully track — a tell Li Wuchen recognized instantly, because he had met this exact creature before, decades from now, in a life that hadn't happened yet.

Ah Jiu. He hadn't known her name back then, either, not for years — she'd simply appeared one day at the edge of Nine Heavens Sect's outer disciple quarters, feral and silent, and eventually attached herself to his household as something between a servant and a stray nobody had the heart to turn away. He'd never learned where she came from. He'd never asked hard enough.

She should not exist yet. Not here. Not now. By his accounting, if this era truly sat ninety-some years before his death, Ah Jiu as he'd known her wouldn't be born — wouldn't appear, whatever the correct word was for a creature like her — for at least another sixty years.

She was watching him from the tree line with an expression that held no fear at all, which was, in its own way, more alarming than if she'd fled.

"You're not supposed to remember things," she said. Her voice was young, but the cadence wasn't — it carried the flat, ancient patience of someone who'd said very similar words before, possibly many times, to many different people who weren't him. "Nobody who loops is supposed to remember this far back."

Li Wuchen went very still.

"You know what's happening to me."

"I know what's happened to you eight times before." She tilted her head, and for a fraction of a second the shadow around her sharpened into something unmistakably vulpine before smoothing back into a girl's outline. "You're new. The others didn't get this far back on their first fall."

"Others."

"You're not the first person to die and walk backward, little sword." She said it without malice, almost gently, the way one might explain rain to a child who'd never seen it before. "You won't be the last, either. But you're the first one who's found me this early."

Before he could ask the thousand questions crowding behind his teeth, she was gone — not fled, not walked away, simply gone, the way a held breath disappears the moment you stop holding it.

Xiao Chen stood alone at the tree line for a long time afterward, seven years old and shaking, and understood for the first time that whatever force had unmade and remade him was far larger, and far older, than a single betrayed cultivator's death.
