Ethan stared at her.
She couldn't stand the idea of him being with Hannah, so now she was insisting he stay beside her all night.
He was sick of being ordered around. And after everything that had happened, all he wanted was a little time with the one person who actually wanted him there.
“Then all three of us can squeeze in,” he said.
Brooke blinked.
“All three?”
“That's the only option. Otherwise, Hannah and I will find somewhere else.”
She hesitated.
“Fine. But don't crowd me.”
The hollow had been worn smooth by years of seawater. Higher rocks rose around its edges, enclosing a space roughly five feet wide and a little over six feet long.
Ethan settled down beside Hannah.
They seemed to be above the waterline for the night, but the stone beneath them was cold.
“Move.”
Brooke wedged herself between them.
Ethan sat up again.
“Seriously?”
“It's freezing. You two were going to huddle together and leave me out here?”
He closed his eyes for a moment.
Even going to sleep had to become an argument.
Did she really not understand that she was making herself the world's most determined third wheel?
“Let's just get through tonight,” Hannah said gently. “Tomorrow, we can cut branches, gather vines and dry leaves, and build something on the beach. It has to be better than this.”
She looked past Brooke at Ethan.
“We'll have time together tomorrow.”
Then she turned onto her side, facing away.
Brooke made a disgusted sound.
“Unbelievable.”
“Are you going to sleep or not?” Ethan demanded.
“Yes. Fine.”
She settled against him as if the argument had never happened.
He thought of the way she had treated him at home. The difference was almost impossible to reconcile. Only a few days ago, she couldn't stand having him near her. Now she wouldn't let him move away.
He decided not to challenge her again. He was exhausted, and another fight wouldn't give any of them more room.
At last, the hollow grew quiet.
The sea rolled against the rocks, withdrew, and came again.
Brooke's breathing gradually slowed.
Ethan reached past her, searching for Hannah's hand.
He had never known what it was like to lie awake thinking about someone who felt the same way about him. After years of loneliness, the small certainty of Hannah being there filled him with a warmth the cold stone couldn't quite take away.
His fingers found hers.
She stirred and squeezed them.
For a little while, they stayed like that, holding hands across the cramped space.
Then pain shot through his arm.
Brooke had pinched him.
Of course she had.
“I'm cold,” she whispered. “Stop moving.”
Her voice sat somewhere between a plea and an order.
Hannah let go. Ethan withdrew his arm.
Brooke shifted closer, making sure he had no room to reach past her again.
“What exactly are you trying to do?” he asked under his breath.
“Get some sleep.”
“Then let me.”
“You're the one fidgeting.”
He stared into the darkness, anger building behind his ribs.
This wasn't about warmth. It wasn't even about space. Brooke wanted to know that, if she asked, he would still put her first.
He adjusted his position, trying to ease the ache in his shoulder.
She caught his wrist.
“Stay still, Leech.”
The old nickname returned, quieter now but no less familiar.
Ethan pulled against her grip.
“Brooke, what do you want from me?”
“I want you to stop sneaking around with Hannah.”
“We're not sneaking around. We're together.”
“If you try anything while I'm here, you'll regret it.”
She drove her hand into him hard enough to make him flinch and curl away.
“Why do you have to make everything miserable?” he asked, his voice shaking with anger.
“Because I don't even have a boyfriend. Why should you get to date someone?”
For a moment, he couldn't answer.
That was her reason?
“Could you both stop?” Hannah said quietly.
Brooke turned her head.
“We're talking. Nobody asked you.”
Hannah ignored her and addressed Ethan.
“Tomorrow, we build shelters. One each. Then everyone gets their own space, and we don't have to do this again.”
“Yes,” Ethan said at once.
A place of his own. The right to decide where he sat, where he slept, whose hand he held.
It sounded almost impossibly good.
“One each is fine,” Brooke said. “As long as it stays one each.”
She caught his arm again and held it firmly against her side.
“Leave it there. Then I'll know if you move.”
Ethan wanted to push her away, go to Hannah, and stop allowing Brooke to turn every moment into a test of obedience.
But beneath the anger, he could feel how frightened she still was. She had none of her father's protection out here, none of the audience that had always made her feel important. All she had was him, and she was clinging to that in the only way she seemed to know.
It didn't excuse her. It only made the situation harder to untangle.
He lay back, staring at the narrow strip of stars above the rocks.
Tomorrow, he would build those shelters.
And then, somehow, he and Hannah would finally have a little space of their own.

“Ethan, please. Don't start another fight.”Hannah held his hand as he walked.“You might be able to ignore it. I can't.”He had told Brooke to stop only yesterday. Apparently, she had already forgotten.“You live with her family. Her dad has done a lot for you. If she wants to say something nasty, let her. I'm okay.”Despite her words, Hannah looked quietly happy that he was defending her.“Take a breath,” she added. “You don't have to fight everyone for me.”“If she had half your understanding...” Ethan muttered.Years of mockery had taught Hannah to endure things nobody should have had to endure. Losing weight hadn't erased that habit. Other people's opinions still stung, but Ethan's was the one she cared about most.“Why does what she thinks still matter so much to you?” she asked suddenly.“It doesn't.”The answer came too quickly.Hannah glanced toward Brooke, walking ahead of them in the moonlight.“Everyone's always treated her like she's special. Chapter 009
Brooke watched them walk away hand in hand, furious.Beneath the anger was something she couldn't quite name: a sharp sense of being left behind, as if someone had taken something she had always assumed was hers.Ethan scraped a shallow pit in the sand and arranged the firewood, leaving gaps for air. Then he set to work with his improvised fire drill. It took more than ten minutes to produce an ember. He sheltered it carefully and blew until the tinder caught.“Wow,” Hannah whispered. She had never seen someone make a fire that way. She watched the first flames rise, then looked at him with such open admiration that he couldn't help smiling.Brooke saw the smile.“Doesn't take much to impress her,” she muttered.Once the fire was established, Ethan went to the rocks to gather food. He pried loose oysters and even collected barnacles. There might be crabs, shrimp, or small fish hiding in the pools too, though they would be hard to spot in the dark. The flashlight changed that.He swept

“Ethan?”She sounded as if she didn't quite trust her own eyes. She took a few more steps, then stopped beneath the moonlight.“It is you.”“Hannah?”Before he could say anything else, Hannah Bennett threw her arms around him.He stood motionless for a second, then hugged her back, awkwardly but tightly.Of all the people he might have found here, she was the one he most wanted to see.At college, they had recognized something in each other. Brooke's public attacks had made Ethan an easy target. People laughed along, and after a while he had learned to expect it.Hannah knew what that felt like. She was about five foot seven and had once weighed more than 175 pounds. Other students had turned her weight into a running joke, calling her a pig and finding new ways to make her feel unwelcome.Ethan hadn't joined in.When she decided she wanted to lose weight, he encouraged her. It took nearly a year of steady effort, but she followed through. She wasn't one of the campus celebrities. She

Brooke stayed tucked against Ethan in the hollow, as if the narrow space beside him were the only safe place left in the world. He barely moved. His arm was going numb, but shifting would only frighten her again. For once, she understood that he was all she had.The howling continued for hours, then finally faded. Neither of them slept well, but the creatures never came onto the beach. At dawn, a gull pecked Ethan awake.“Get lost!”He flapped a hand at it. Brooke stirred beside him.“I'm starving.” She pressed a hand to her stomach. “And so thirsty. I could drink a gallon of water.”She stared at the ocean and swallowed.“Not that water,” Ethan said. “Unless you want to make things worse.”But the sight of the sea reminded him of something. The animals in the forest had to get water somewhere. There must be a freshwater source on the island.Finding it mattered more than finding another meal.He collected a few oysters and other shellfish from around the rocks. After they had eaten e

Ethan stood over Brooke, trembling. His anger had carried him this far. Now, staring at the fear she was trying to hide, he could see the edge of what he was about to become.“My dad treated you like his own son,” she said. “From the moment you moved in.”Tears slipped down her face.“And I had to share him with you. You took him from me. Now you want to hurt me? After everything he did for you?”The mention of David hit Ethan harder than her slap.He stopped. He remembered his father's death. David taking him home. All the years the man had worked to make sure Ethan had somewhere to belong. Then he remembered his own father's words: Be someone people can depend on. Stand up for yourself, but don't lose sight of who you are.Ethan released her and stepped back. His father hadn't raised him to answer cruelty with a different kind of cruelty. That didn't make the anger disappear. It left him with nowhere to put it.“I've put up with you for years,” he said. “Why couldn't you let me have
