The silence in the hallway was so absolute that a dropping pin would have sounded like a gunshot.

Dozens of elite students stood frozen like statues. They stared down at the concrete landing where Trent, the untouchable king of Oakbridge Academy, lay sobbing. He clutched his unnaturally bent leg, crying loudly like a frightened child.

Without breaking his stride, Leo Vance simply stepped right over Trent’s crying body. He did not look down. He did not smile. He didn't even turn his head. He continued walking down the bright, polished hallway, heading toward his first class, looking as calm as if he were taking a quiet morning stroll through a park.

From the dark corner near the tall lockers, a pair of sharp eyes watched him leave.

It was a girl. She leaned against the cold metal lockers, entirely hidden in the shadows. Her hair was a striking, unnatural pale silver that caught the light, and her eyes were a piercing ice blue. This was Elara Frost.

Most students thought Elara was just a quiet, mysterious rich girl who liked to read. But that was a lie. Elara was the sole heir to the Frost Corporate Dynasty—a massive, multi-billion dollar company that secretly controlled half the legal and illegal magical trade in the city.

Elara narrowed her eyes, watching Leo’s back disappear around the corner.

“What just happened?” she thought, her mind racing. “Trent’s Misfortune Charm is a low-level kinetic item. It should have pushed Vance down the stairs. But the force reversed perfectly. It rebounded.”

Elara’s family had taught her to sense magic since she was a baby. She closed her eyes and reached out with her mind. In the air right where Leo had snapped his fingers, she could still feel the lingering traces of something terrifying.

It wasn’t just kinetic energy. It was a perfectly structured, impossibly dense pocket of pure arcane force. And it had tasted like... absolute freezing cold fire.

“Leo Vance is supposed to be a mundane,” Elara thought, a frown appearing on her beautiful face. “A poor charity case from the slums. But no mundane could casually deflect a magical attack like that without breaking a sweat.”

She opened her eyes and pushed herself away from the lockers.

"Interesting," she whispered to herself. She pulled out her expensive smartphone and sent a quick text message to her family's private intelligence team. “Look into a boy named Leo Vance. I want to know everything about him by the time the final bell rings.”

The rest of the school day passed in a blur of terrified whispers. Nobody dared to speak to Leo. If a teacher called on him, he answered the question perfectly, his voice smooth and cold. If a student accidentally walked too close to him in the cafeteria, they would apologize frantically and run away.

For Zayin, the ancient soul inside the teenager, high school was a complete waste of time. He spent the hours sitting in the back of the classroom, secretly circulating mana through his newly refined bones.

When the final bell finally rang, Leo packed his bag and walked out the front gates alone.

He did not walk toward his apartment. He knew the Obsidian Cartel would return tonight. The two Collectors had fled like cowards, but they would tell their master what happened. The Cartel would send stronger fighters. They would bring guns, and they would bring better magic.

Leo's newly refined bones were stronger than normal human bones, but his mortal flesh was still weak. A bullet to the brain would still kill him.

He needed to cast a High-Tier Arcane Shield. But if he tried to pull that much raw mana through his mortal veins right now, his heart would explode. He needed a magical item—a catalyst—to hold the energy for him.

Leo caught a dirty city bus and rode it deep into the city's old industrial district. He stepped off the bus and walked down a narrow, dirty street filled with broken streetlights and abandoned warehouses.

This was the Under-Market.

To a normal person, this street just looked like a row of sad, cheap pawnshops and dusty antique stores. But to anyone with a little bit of magical sense, this was the supernatural bazaar of the city.

Leo pushed open the heavy wooden door of a shop called "Curiosities & Coins." A small brass bell jingled loudly above his head.

The shop was dark and smelled like old dust and burning incense. Every shelf was packed with strange items: strange animal skulls, old silver rings, dried plants in glass jars, and heavy, leather-bound books.

Behind the glass counter sat a fat, greasy man with a gold tooth. He was reading a dirty magazine. When he saw Leo, a teenager wearing a cheap, faded school uniform, his face twisted into an annoyed frown.

"We don't buy stolen video games, kid," the shopkeeper grunted, not looking up from his magazine. "Get out."

Leo ignored the man. He walked slowly around the small shop, his dark eyes scanning the shelves. He was looking for any object that contained a stable core of mana.

Most of the items in the shop were completely useless. They were just old junk meant to trick stupid tourists. But then, inside a locked glass display case, Leo spotted something interesting.

It was a dagger. The blade was made of shiny black obsidian stone, and the handle was carved from dark wood. Along the side of the blade, strange silver runes were painted in a complex pattern.

Leo stopped and pointed at the dagger. "How much for that?"

The fat shopkeeper finally looked up. He saw where Leo was pointing, and a greedy, nasty smile spread across his face. He recognized that this kid didn't look like he belonged in the Under-Market, but maybe he was some rich politician's son playing dress-up.

The shopkeeper unlocked the case and pulled the dagger out carefully.

"Your aim is terrible," Leo said calmly, closing the distance between them. He stood right in front of her, towering over her slightly. Elara was too stunned to raise her guns again. She just looked up into his dark, endlessly deep eyes. "And your magic is even worse," Leo continued, his voice dropping to a cold whisper. He reached out and gently tapped the barrel of her silver revolver. "You think you are using ice magic, Elara. But you are not."Elara finally found her voice. "What are you talking about? My family has used the Frost Arts for centuries! We are the masters of ice!""You are fools," Leo corrected her softly. "True ice magic is drawn from the moisture in the air. But you? You are drawing the cold from inside your own body. You are not casting magic; you are bleeding out a curse."Elara took a step back, her face turning pale. "That's a lie.""Is it?" Leo asked, raising an eyebrow. He looked closely at her face. "Tell me, do you have trouble sleeping at night because y

The invisible shockwave of raw magic faded away, leaving the city quiet once more. Leo stood on the dark sidewalk of the Under-Market, looking down at his empty hand. The glowing Aether Core was completely gone. It had dissolved into pure energy, rushing into his newly refined bones and filling his body with immense power. For the first time since he had awakened in this fragile mortal body, Zayin felt a tiny bit of his true strength return. “Good,” he thought, a cold smile forming on his lips. “This will be enough to shield me from their bullets tonight.” Leo shoved his hands into his pockets and began to walk. He did not want to cast any spells in the middle of the street where mundane humans could see him. He needed a quiet place to test his new magical reserves. He walked for twenty minutes until he found a small, abandoned park near the edge of the industrial district. The swings were rusted, and the grass was overgrown with thick weeds. The single streetlight near the entra

"Ah, you have a good eye, boy," the man lied smoothly, trying to sound important. "This is the 'Blade of Shadows.' It is a genuine 15th-century dark magic artifact, found in a tomb in Europe. The runes on the blade will allow you to cut through solid steel. Because I like your face, I will give you a special discount. One hundred thousand dollars. Cash only."Leo stared at the dagger, and then he looked at the shopkeeper. Slowly, Leo let out a short, cold laugh. "One hundred thousand?" Leo scoffed. His voice was filled with deep insult. "You are not just a thief; you are a terrible liar."The shopkeeper’s greedy smile vanished. His face turned red with anger. "Listen here, you little punk—""The blade is not obsidian," Leo interrupted, his voice cutting through the air like a whip. "It is cheap painted glass. And the 'ancient' runes on the side? They are drawn completely wrong. The third symbol is supposed to mean 'Strength,' but whoever painted it missed a line. As it is drawn righ

"It was a trick of the light," Leo lied calmly. "The Cartel thugs were just trying to scare us. They didn't really hurt me.""But they wanted my soul! They had magic!" Maya panicked, grabbing her hair. "I handled it," Leo said, his tone leaving no room for argument. "You do not need to worry about the Obsidian Cartel anymore."Maya looked at him like he was crazy. "Leo, they are murderers! They won't just stop! Listen to me," she grabbed his shoulders, her eyes wide with desperation. "You need to go to school. Oakbridge Academy has security guards. The Cartel won't attack you in broad daylight around all those rich kids. Just go to school, keep your head down, and stay hidden. I will go talk to my boss at the diner. Maybe he can give me a loan. I will figure out the money."Leo looked at his sister. He saw the deep, genuine love in her tired eyes. He knew the Cartel was not finished. He knew he had to destroy them completely. But right now, Maya needed to feel like she was in contro

"Leo! No, no, stay with me!" Maya screamed. She dropped to her knees on the cheap linoleum floor. Her little brother’s head rested in her lap. His skin was as cold as ice, and thick, black blood spilled from his lips. Maya panicked. She reached into her pocket with trembling hands and pulled out her cracked cell phone. Her fingers quickly dialed 9-1-1. "I'm getting an ambulance," she cried, tears streaming down her face. "Just hold on, Leo! They will fix you!"Before she could press the call button, a pale, bloody hand reached up and grabbed her wrist. Maya gasped. She looked down. Leo’s eyes were half-open. The strange violet fire in them was gone, replaced by deep exhaustion. But his grip on her wrist was surprisingly strong. "No... hospitals," Leo whispered. His voice was hoarse and weak. "They cannot... fix this. No doctors.""But you're dying!" Maya sobbed. "You are coughing up black blood!""Toxins," Leo managed to say. "Just... give me a moment."Inside the boy's mind, th
