Serena's phone buzzed. Strange number.

She expression tightened, shifting between the ticking wall clock and the phone.

12p.m. Dead hour of the night. Who could be ringing her? Her mind reeled to different possibilities. Her hand hovered on screen as she contemplated swiping to green or terminating he strange number.

Eventually, she picked the call.

The phone laid on her hand as she waited for a voice to break through the speaker.

"Hello," A masculine voice cracked the speaker. "Is it Mrs. Hart on the line?"

Serena paused, allowing the question to pass in the silence. That was Benjamin's name. The name she once bore. Hearing that name felt like acid twisting her stomach.

Her brow raised in suspicion. "And who is this?"

"Dr. Frankenstein from Starlight medical center." He said. "Can I be assured i'm speaking with Mrs. Hart?"

"It's Serena. Just serena." She corrected immediately.

The man paused at the other end as though rethinking his former composed words.

"Ms. Serena. I hope you're aware your daughter has been in our clinic for the past three days. We've not heard anything from your husband since the last 24hrs since he went to source money for her surgery. Your number served as the next guardian number which is why you're called to be informed about her status."

Serena's heart twisted like a rumpled sheet. Her daughter. The product from her regret, her dead husband. She'd been so occupied in her covetousness for cloat that she'd forgotten about her daughter.

Her expression faltered instantly. Guilt struck her heart like dagger— sharp and deep.

Blood is indeed thicker than water.

She'd failed as a mother. Failed as a wife. How could a mother forget she has a daughter?

And Hell!

That was another obstacle.

As much as she was trying to erase tracks, her shits were still dragging behind, leaving prints.

Her lips parted for words, but nothing formed. She pressed her jaw together, getting hold of her emotions.

"What about Aria? My daughter?"

A long pause passed before the silence broke, shattering something already fragile inside of her.

"Your daughter," Dr. Frankenstein's voice came low, pitying. "She's dead."

Her world tilted. Guilt burned in her eyes. But beneath, she felt no emotions. No remorse. She had neglected her daughter for a long time. There was no special bond linking them. Only blood.

She had been too occupied with interviews, campaigns, and rallies to spare 3hrs. Just three short hours to engage her lovely daughter.

She stepped down from the bed, adjusting the sling of the silk night wear dropping from her shoulder. The phone pressed on her ear now as she stood against the window, staring into blurry distance lights of the city. The city which will soon be under her control. Her throne.

She's just a step up there now. And nothing is going to drag her down. The gentle night breeze brushed her face, like a consolation in the whole mayhem.

"You have jobs to do, Doc," Finally, she said, an edge in her voice. "Ten thousand grands. Watcha say?"

"Pardon?" Dr. Frankenstein was obviously confused. "Are you asking me to bury your dead?"

She smirked— cold, dangerous. "I'm asking you to bury the truth."

She counted on.

"Sad story for the media. Make everything count. Let them pity. This is between me and you— scout's honour."

"I'm not gonna do that." The doctor said firmly. His recalcitrant tone was like an offense to Serena.

She chuckled low with a dangerous edge. "Dr. Frank, isn't," She said. "You have families, Don't you?"

"Are you trying to threaten me right now?!"

Dr. Frank boiled in anger.

"Count it as anything, Doc, I don't care. But don't do as i say, then you're gonna have a big problem."

"Send your account and I wire the money," She clipped, her voice commanding and arrogant. "You'll see me first tomorrow. Remember your jobs, and don't trynna play smart with me, Doc. Else...." She paused, her smirk deadly, as though the weight of what she's gonna do would be really unbearable for the poor doctor.

*********

Dr. Frankenstein, late-fourties with salt and pepper hair but looking maintained. He'd been in the medical field for over twenty years, pampering his esteemed reputation. In his line of job, he'd encountered a lot of experience but this...it looks seemingly a line he shouldn't cross especially that it involves his family. The threat in Serena's tone couldn't be ignored.

He grabbed his phone, quickly putting a call across to his family. The phone rang out but his wife didn't pick.

His heart raced, frantically dialing her again. This time, his wife picked up.

"Where did you put you phone," Concern laced his quick voice. "Didn't you see my call the first time?"

"Honey, I'm sorry about that," Her voice came exhausted and drowsy. "It was your call that woke me. And moreover, you know I do sleep early. Is there any problem? How's work?" Her voice cleared a bit.

Dr. Frankenstein exhaled breath he didn't know he was holding all along, relief washing over him. "Nothing is the problem, honey. I just decided to check up on you since I haven't really spoken to you throughout the days."

"Alright. Alright. I'm fine."

"Let me not disturb your sleep, Dear," He said, his mind flooding with relief now that he heard from his wife. "Goodnight. I love you,"

"I love you too. Bye."

Dr. Frankenstein dropped the phone and leaned back with a sharp exhale.

His mind spun with Serena's threat, making him wonder if the deceased girl wasn't her daughter.

His finger tapped on the armrest as he pondered on what to do.

He leaned forward and picked up his phone again, deciding to call Benjamin again since he was the one who had taking care of Aria's treatment all along.
