The Grant estate was in ruins, not in walls or marble, but in spirit. Harold Grant paced the length of the study, phone glued to his ear, screaming at bankers, lawyers, senators.

No one answered the way they used to. Once, doors opened before his family’s name; now, they were slamming shut.

Damian stood off to the side, glass of whiskey untouched, eyes burning with rage. Every news channel spat venom at him, words like fraud, criminal ties, corruption. His name was mud, and he knew exactly who was behind it.

“Adrian Cole,” Damian muttered, gripping the edge of the desk until his knuckles whitened. “That bastard won’t stop until I’m ashes.”

Elena lingered by the doorway, her presence almost ghostlike. She had not been summoned, but she had nowhere else to go.

She listened as Harold barked, “We’ll sue, we’ll silence, we’ll buy our way out” only to be cut short by another slammed line. For the first time, Elena saw Harold Grant look small.
