the following morning as Emma got home emma walked through the front door of her family's mansion, her body bruised and battered. She had never felt so defeated and humiliated in her life.

Her mother, Victoria, was waiting for her in the living room, a look of concern etched on her face. "Emma, what happened to you?" she asked, rushing over to her daughter.

Emma broke down in tears, telling her mother everything that had happened with Paulo. She told her about the way he had manipulated and controlled her, about the way he had hit her.

Victoria's expression changed from concern to rage as she listened to her daughter's story. "How could he do this to you?" she spat, her eyes blazing with anger.

But then, to Emma's surprise, her mother's anger turned on her. "And how could you be so stupid, Emma?" Victoria asked, her voice venomous. "How could you let him treat you like this?"

Emma felt a sting from her mother's words, but she tried to explain. "Mom, I was in love with him," she said.

He’d known her for a long time—too long, maybe—and every time he saw her, she looke
