The sun had barely stretched past its morning arc when Emily began preparing for the ball.

She didn’t go to work.

Didn’t so much as glance at a report or touch a blade. Today was different and so she treated it that way.

She stood before the mirror in their bedroom, her arms crossed beneath her robe, her eyes scanning the room like something was missing. Then she turned her gaze back to herself.

Hair first.

The stylist that Katherine had recommended showed up right on time. A quiet, efficient woman named Lorna, who worked with delicate fingers and soft hums.

She twisted Emily’s hair into a cascading braid woven with soft silver threads, barely visible, but catching the light in the most elegant way.

“Mhh…didn’t think you’d be one for hairdos and make-up,” Emily told Katherine in a video call as she showcased her recommendation’s work.

“Girls gotta look pretty when kicking ass,” Katherine replied simply.

Then came the makeup.

Subtle. Earthy.

They had barely closed the front door behind them when Sylvester paused, hand still on the knob. The warmth of their shopping trip clung to them, but the look on his face said his mind had long since drifted to something else.Emily noticed immediately. “What are you thinking about?”He turned slowly, meeting her gaze. “You said something earlier. About not understanding your powers.”She blinked. “Yeah. Why?”“Because it’s been gnawing at me since we left the mall.”Emily raised a brow. “Wait, right now? I thought we were going to relax…”But Sylvester was already walking toward the study.“Oh no,” she groaned, dragging her feet behind him. “Not the board…”Five minutes later, Emily sat slumped on a chair in the study, watching in semi-horror as Sylvester uncapped a marker and drew a wobbly diagram across the board. The board was still stained from his last ‘lecture,’ which she suspected had something to do with battle formations…or sandwich proportions. She couldn’t remember.“Ok

When Sylvester stepped into their quarters that evening, he was met with the warm scent of vanilla and the soft hum of Emily’s voice singing off-key to herself. She was brushing out her hair by the mirror, still wearing her training clothes from earlier, but her eyes lit up when she saw him.“You’re back!” she beamed, spinning around. “So? How was work?”Sylvester walked in, unstrapping the leather band from his wrist. “You might want to sit for this.”Emily narrowed her eyes playfully but humored him, flopping onto the couch like a child ready for a bedtime story.“There’s going to be a ball,” Sylvester said, watching her reaction closely.Emily’s eyes widened. “Oh, my goodness. After how many years?!” Sylvester shook his head at his wife’s excitement. “Relax, darling. The last time we went for one of those, we were attacked…twice. I can’t understand your enthusiasm for these things.”“We were attacked because you’re Sylvester Wright, baby…not because we were going for a ball.”“Fa

"You did it," Sylvester said when they finally arrived home, his voice thick with pride."I think... I think I’m never doing that again," she mumbled. Her muscles ached in protest, and her body screamed for the touch of something cold to quell the heat of today’s exercise.A shower. She was in when Sylvester came in to join her, fully unclad.“I think I like what I see,” he murmured into her ear, taking a soft bite out of the under of her lobes. She arched her back and smiled, liking his comforting warmth that tamed the coolness of the water. A perfect balance. The water pelleted her tired skin, revitalizing her, and doing something strange. It added to the chills in her bones…the one her husband’s touch had just started giving her.“The body of a champion,” she teased, pressing her behind against him and rubbing sensually. “…is always an alluring sight.”“Now, imagine Emily the champion,” he purred. “So hot.”Her brain sparked. The praises weren’t alien, but this time, there was some

“This looks familiar,” Emily folded her arms as she scanned the course. “Because it is,” Katherine nodded. She rolled her shoulders, bounced a little on the balls of her feet, and looked toward Katherine, who stood off to the side with a clipboard in hand. "You sure this is it?" Emily asked, tilting her head with a suspicious grin. Katherine didn't respond, only smirked and gave her a nod. That smirk alone should’ve warned her. “Well…the things we do for mastery, ey?” Emily took off, clearing the first obstacle. The tiles of course, were slippery, and they shifted from side to side every time her foot made contact. But yesterday’s mistakes were today’s lessons, and the course was relatively easier. She barely put her foot down from the obstacle when she had a fourth of a second to react and dodge a punch from a man. “What the…” she stopped when she realized what was happening. This was why today’s course was different. There were fighters. Mid-level, this one. That was cl

The next morning came with its own set of challenges, and the same way it was the day before was the same way it was now.Tension. Thick and charged, electrified the morning atmosphere, and brought about a new dimension of raw, undeniable energy that needed to be expended.Emily was ready.Or at least, she wanted to be. She underestimated how tired the first day’s exercise made her, and how loudly her muscles would be screaming for her to take a break. The moment she caught sight of the new obstacles…the towering wall of rotating blades, the suspended rope path above a bed of jagged rocks, and the pit of dense fog with moving silhouettes, her heart dropped into her stomach. This wasn’t just harder. It was brutal…just like she had asked.Katrina walked up beside her, arms crossed and a smirk tugging the corners of her lips. "Looks a bit meaner today, huh?"Emily gave a breathy laugh. "Understatement of the year."Katrina turned toward her, expression softening. "Hey, listen. You alre
