Liam's POV
I entered my room and slammed the door immediately. I sat down and placed the book on my lap.
With the textbook almost gone, I flipped through the pages as I recalled the pages where I scribbled the phrases in college.
Page one had Moon.
Page ten had Parent.
Page twenty had Frog.
All the way to page ninety.
I grab the textbook and my phone as I jot them down.
Nine phrases are clear, but the tenth, on page ninety, is fuzzy. The book was burnt, but it showed it started with “Advan.”
Is it enough? Absolutely not.
I open my laptop, hands shaking, and log into my old Bitcoin wallet. I type the phrases up to the ninth.
Then the tenth stumps me. “Advan” could be anything.
I tried a few words that started with ‘Advan’, but it kept saying an error. I was lost and didn't know what to do. But I kept trying until I became scared.
The screen warns: three tries before the account locks.
The more my hand wavered on the keyboard, the more I got scared. Then, I tried *advance*.
Error.
I tried *advantage*
Error.
Sweat beads on my forehead as my palms felt slick.
One try left.
I close my eyes, picturing my college dorm, the late nights mining Bitcoin when it was just a geeky hobby but nothing comes.
I’m about to toss my laptop in defeat, but I take a breath.
One last shot.
I typed *advanced* as slowly as I could and pressed enter.
The screen spins, rolling, rolling, like it’ll never stop.
Then, like a dream, it clicks—access granted.
My account opens: $92 billion in Bitcoin. I laughed so hard that I forgot I needed to keep quiet. I’m richer than all the Harringtons combined!
I stood up as I turned the screen to the wall.
Suddenly, Claire bursts in, “Liam, what’s wrong?”
At that moment, I wanted to show her, tell her I’m not the nobody they think, but something stops me.
“Nothing,” I said, shutting the laptop. To change the subject, I asked, “Any leads on a buyer for the company? I overheard you and your relatives. I think the starting price should be at least $900 million.”
Claire throws her hands up, standing beside me. “Exactly my thoughts! $900 million, not $600 million like they want.” She sighed. “I tried convincing them you could run it. You’re smart, Liam, with your computer science degree, your market skills. But they won’t let an outsider take over. I wish Dad had left the company in my name, not shared it with them,” she adds.
I nodded. “It’ll be okay,” I say, wanting to believe it. I leaned to kiss her, needing the Claire I loved.
She pulls back, planting a quick kiss on my cheek. “Wash up, Liam. You still reek of champagne.” I scoffed as I watched her leave.
***
I barely slept as my mind was filled with different plans on how I can buy the company and make everything easier for Claire.
Monday morning, I shower, ready for work, but as I wanted to dress, I found out that my clothes were missing, and I thought Nathan or Lila’s playing tricks again.
I’m about to fume when Claire walks in, holding my work shirt and pants, neatly ironed. “I took them to the laundry when you were out two days ago,” she says, handing them over. “They came in yesterday, but you were sleeping.”
I smile, surprised. “Thanks,” I say, and she nods. “No breakfast for me today. I’m meeting buyers. Mother’s pushing me to sell.” Her voice sounds tired, and I frowned.
“You okay?” I asked.
She shrugs. “I’ll be fine. I just want a good buyer.” She leaves, and I’m left wondering why she cares for me one minute and pushes me away the next.
At work, I can’t focus, my $92 billion which had leaped to $93 billion secret buzzing in my head.
The Harringtons want to sell Claire’s company for $600 million, but she’s holding out for $900 million. I contact a lawyer through an encrypted app, using an alias—John Gray—to stay anonymous.
I offered $450 million as half payment for the company and the other half when the deal has been completed. I wired half the deposit from my Bitcoin wallet. The lawyer confirms the bid is in, and Claire will meet “John Gray” tomorrow.
I grin, imagining Nathan’s face when he learns someone he had looked down on for years will be his boss soon.
That evening, the Harringtons hosted a dinner, their relatives packed around the dining table.
I’m forced to serve again, my warehouse job meaning nothing to them.
Claire sat at the head. “I got an offer for the company,” she says, “$900 million. I’m meeting the buyer tomorrow.” The table gasped, and I can’t hide my smile.
Nathan slams his glass down. “Who’s this buyer?” he snaps.
“His lawyer said he wants to keep a low profile.” Claire responded.
“Some nobody trying to steal our legacy?” Lila snickered. “Probably another loser like Liam.” My smile fades, but I stay quiet.
I couldn't get angry any more.
I only blessed myself with the picture of buying their whole empire and firing them all from the board.
So instead of lamenting, I grab a napkin, wiping the gravy as they all laughed. Claire’s eyes glared at me, but she said nothing.
Why does she let this happen every fucking time? I thought as I stormed to my room, locking the door.
Suddenly, my phone rings. It was an unknown number.
I answered. “Who’s this?” A low voice growled. “You think you can outbuy me, John? Withdraw your $900 million bid or you’ll regret it.”
Apart from the gimmicks of the Harringtons, this one sounded like an actual threat and for once I had forgotten that having greater wealth means getting head on with other wealthy men.
My blood runs cold almost immediately, but I'm calm because they don't know my name.
“Who are you?” I demand, but the line goes dead.
Then as I sat in silence, I remembered Mr. Edwards words, “One day you'll sit where I had been and you'll realize, living a simple life is worth more than riches.”

65: THE THIRD PLAYER
Liam's POVI stared at the files Ashley had sent while my first instinct screamed to delete everything and pretend I never saw them. The same game was starting again with both siblings providing evidence against each other, both claiming to be innocent while the other was guilty, both asking me to choose a side that would end with someone dead.Part of me wanted to ignore all of it and walk away from the trial, from the Rossi family, from everything that had trapped me in this impossible situation. But I couldn't afford to ignore either Ashley or Michael because despite their lies and manipulations, they were both assets with years of experience navigating this world. I needed to figure out how to use them rather than be used by them."What are you looking at?" Claire asked while setting a plate of toast in front of me."Evidence that makes everything more complicated," I replied before explaining what Michael had asked me to do and what Ashley had just sent in response.Claire read t
64: THE REQUEST
Liam's POVMichael called me the very next morning after the court case was dismissed. I had barely slept after everything that happened and I was sitting in the hotel room drinking coffee while Claire was still asleep when my phone buzzed with his name on the screen."We need to talk," Michael said without greeting when I answered."About what?" I asked, though I already suspected this conversation was related to the debt he had mentioned yesterday."Not over the phone," Michael replied. "Meet me at the warehouse on Roosevelt Avenue in one hour."He hung up before I could respond, leaving me staring at my phone while dread settled in my stomach. I knew he was going to ask for something significant and I had agreed yesterday that I couldn't refuse when he came to collect.I left a note for Claire saying I had business to handle, then drove to the warehouse Michael had specified. When I arrived, he was already there waiting with a folder in his hands that looked thick with documents."
63: THE DEBT
Liam's POVThe hearing about the flagged payment happened two days after we discovered it in the audit report. Sarah had tried to get a continuance to give us more time to investigate the signature forgery but Judge Morrison denied the request, saying the case had already dragged on long enough.Claire and I sat at the defense table while Nathan's legal team prepared to destroy us with evidence we couldn't properly refute without exposing my connection to organized crime. Patterson stood up with a smile that told me he knew he had won before even speaking."Your Honor, the forensic audit revealed a transaction that proves exactly what we've been arguing all along," Patterson began. "A payment of two point three million dollars from Harrington Tech to an offshore entity that traces directly back to the Rossi crime family."He distributed copies of the transaction records to the judge while continuing his presentation."Claire Harrington approved this payment personally," Patterson said
62: THE FLAGGED TRANSACTION
Liam's POVThe forensic team arrived at Harrington Tech headquarters three days after the judge ordered the audit. They were a group of five accountants who looked like they had never smiled in their entire lives, carrying boxes of equipment and setting up a temporary office in one of the conference rooms.Claire gave them access to everything they requested without hesitation because we had nothing to hide.Or at least that's what I kept telling myself while watching them dive into four years of financial records. The audit took four weeks of methodical examination. Every contract Claire had signed, every vendor she had approved, every strategic decision documented in board minutes got scrutinized by people whose job was finding problems.I tried to stay away from the building during this time because my presence would only fuel Nathan's narrative about inappropriate influence, but Claire kept me updated on their progress through nightly phone calls."They're very thorough," Claire t
61: THE AUDIT
Liam's POVThe Harringtons didn't waste any time moving forward with their lawsuit. Within three days of filing, Nathan's legal team had scheduled a preliminary hearing where they would present their case to the judge.Claire and I sat in the courtroom with our own lawyers while watching Nathan take his seat on the opposite side with Vivian beside him for moral support. The judge entered and everyone stood until she took her seat behind the bench. She was an older woman with gray hair pulled back severely who looked like she had seen every kind of family dispute imaginable during her career."This is a hearing regarding the petition to remove Claire Harrington as CEO of Harrington Tech," the judge began. "Mr. Patterson, you may present your arguments."Nathan's lead attorney stood up while adjusting his expensive suit. He was the kind of lawyer who charged a thousand dollars an hour to tell rich people what they wanted to hear."Your Honor, this case is about protecting a valuable com
60: SEVERED TIES
Claire's POVThe next morning I woke up to seventeen missed calls from various family members who weren't my mother, Nathan, or Christopher. When I finally listened to my voicemail, I heard my aunt's sympathetic voice telling me I should check the news before going into work.I turned on the television in the hotel room while Liam was in the shower. The business news channel was showing a press conference from earlier that morning. My mother stood at a podium wearing her most formal suit with Nathan on one side and Christopher on the other."The Harrington family has always valued integrity, honesty, and sound judgment," my mother said to the assembled reporters. "Unfortunately my daughter Claire has demonstrated that she does not share these values."My stomach dropped as I realized she was actually doing this publicly instead of just within the family."Claire has chosen to associate with known criminals despite repeated warnings from her family," Vivian continued. "She has put the
