Chapter three

Lucas turned towards the door only to see it was the worst people he wouldn’t want to come across, Freya, his ex, and Alexander. His face scrunched up into a frown as he knew there was no way things would go well with them here.

“Look, we have new customers. Look how beautiful she looks.” The sales agent who should have attended to Lucas looked away, to Freya, and rushed towards them.

Besides the way they were dressed, and the reputation that the Alexander family held, who wouldn’t want to attend to them?

“How may I help you, sir?” The sales agent humbled herself as she spoke to him, entirely different from how she was to Lucas.

“Hey miss, I am here with my girlfriend. We want to buy something nice. Perhaps a necklace or some shoes.” As he spoke, he wrapped his hand around Freya possessively, just so Lucas could see.

Seeing this, Freya blushed. He wasn’t only respected at every turn they took, he had just declared that she was his, and what’s more, he wanted to buy her a necklace. A total contrast from what that poor bastard over there could ever do in his entire life.

“Babe, I want this.” Just then, Freya looked over and saw a sapphire necklace that was on display. The same one which Lucas had pointed out not long ago.

“Ooh, the sapphire necklace, it’s a limited edition. There are just fifty pieces in the entire world, and we could only get one to our store. This piece goes for a whopping sum of 1.5 million dollars.” The sales agent went into detail as she spoke.

After all, Alexander was rich so she was sure he could afford it. The commission she could get from the sale alone was worth half a year of her salary. This made her smile as she was over the moon already.

“What?” Freya gasped.

Alexander's heart trembled, but he put on a smile and said instead.

“Let me guess, this limited edition is produced by Cartier? Given by its unique features and perfect craftsmanship, it’s ranked among the top seven in the world for luxurious antiques, despite being on the market for just a few months.”

The sales agent was stunned. She looked at him and asked. “You know a lot about antiques?”

“Hahaha, there are some things I had to be good at, so I wouldn’t be cheated.” Alexander chuckled lightly before looking at Freya.

“I have reached my limit for the day, so I can’t buy that necklace for you. Why don’t we check others? Ranging from ten to twenty thousand dollars.” He suggested.

Though he didn’t voice it out, there was no way he was going to spend 1.5 million to buy a Necklace for her. Even if he had a gun to his head, he wouldn’t. Why would he waste a lot of money on her? That was even more than the allowance he got from his parents in a year.

Did she want him to go broke because of her? Not happening.

“Ten to twenty thousand? But Charlotte's boyfriend bought her a necklace for fifty thousand dollars.” Freya complained, frowning.

“Maybe next month, when I haven’t reached my limit.”

At this point, given how Alexander described the necklace, it attracted so many eyes, and they surrounded the showcase to have a view for themselves.

They were young students after all, so they seemed desperate when they saw luxurious things.

Meanwhile, Alexander went on to chat with the sales agent, having her show him other antiques that weren’t worth that much. At least from ten thousand over to fifty thousand.

He was very impressive, leaving the sales agent more stunned. In fact, she never had so much knowledge in her arsenal, but he did.

On the other hand, Lucas was tired of being ignored. Alexander came in and stole all the spotlight, and now he was shunned. They didn’t even have any regard for him whatsoever.

However, just as he was about to leave, another sales agent walked towards him. She was very nervous and at a glance one could tell she was new and desperate to make her first sale.

“Hello….sir, may I help you?” She stuttered. Though she was timid, her polite words caught Lucas’s heart.

“I am shopping for a birthday gift for a friend.” He replied.

“Do you have our shopping card. If you do, there will be huge discounts for every item to purchase here.”

She didn’t care about how he was dressed, or if he had been looked down on by her peers before. He was the only customer she could find, so she wanted to make a good impression and attend to him.

“You mean this one?” Lucas pulled out the VIP card he had for her to view.

This made her eyes widen.

“That’s the VIP platinum card?” She gasped, trying hard to believe a student would have such a card.

“What’s a platinum card?” Lucas asked, as he was new to all this.

“It’s a VIP card. It has a maximum of fifty million dollars cash balance and the minimum spending limit is a million dollars.” She explained.

Lucas' eyes widened. He never expected such a package from his sister. Indeed, it was nothing but luxury itself.

“With your VIP card, you should be able to buy so many things here. Do you have any on your mind? I’ll get it for you.” The shy sales agent was instantly filled with so much energy as she spoke.

“I’ve picked, it’s this one.” Lucas smiled and pointed at the sapphire necklace. It was around 1.5 million, so of course he could get it.

“That’s a perfect choice. I will take it out now.” The sales agent rushed over to get the keys. When she was back, she walked over and was about to open the display glass so she could show it off to Lucas as after all he could buy it.

“What are you doing?” The other sales agent who had ignored Lucas before yelled.

“I’m taking it out on this customer. He likes it.” The shy sales agent replied.

“Hahaha.”

Everyone laughed, especially Alexander after seeing it was Lucas. Did he hit his head or what? How the heck would someone like him think they could buy such a necklace?

“Do you know what you are doing? How can you say this nut job can buy this necklace?” Sonia, the other sales agent said with disdain in her eyes.

“Mia, if you are that desperate to make your first sale, why don’t you try to catch a big shot instead of some hopeless dude?” She added, causing everyone to laugh even harder.

“Lucas, you are such a joke. Do you think that necklace costs a few bucks? Tell me, did you run so many errands today that you think you can buy it?” Just then, Freya chimed in.

Lucas looked at them and was tired of all this. Angrily, he pulled the platinum card from earlier and dropped it on the showroom glass.

“Wrap this up for me. I don’t want to waste any more time!”

Chapter 121A few months later....For three months, Lucas had lived in this self-imposed exile. The sharp, promising scholarship student was gone, a ghost replaced by this pale, focused operative. His crime had been curiosity; his sentence, social and academic obliteration. The Sentinel System—the university’s all-seeing, all-judging digital panopticon designed for “community harmony and proactive wellness”—had been turned against him with surgical precision. It had started with a research fellowship under Professor Alistair Finch, a charismatic pioneer in campus predictive analytics. Lucas, diving deep into the Sentinel’s source code for his thesis on algorithmic bias, had found the “Oracles”: a set of privileged, hidden administrative accounts that could inject data, alter behavioral flags, and manipulate the all-important “Civic Trust Score” without a trace. The Oracles weren’t a bug; they were a backdoor, woven into the system’s very fabric. His forensic trail led not to a hacker

Chapter 120The choice was made. Path Three: Subversion. Now, Lucas Johnson had to build his arsenal. His intelligence was vast, scattered across encrypted drives, cloud snippets, and the labyrinthine corridors of his own memory. To wage a war from inside the enemy's walls, he needed it weaponized: organized, accessible, and protected with the kind of failsafes that would make attacking him the costliest mistake Sentinel could ever make.He began by designing the architecture. This wasn't a simple folder of documents. It was a strategic database, a war room in digital form. He used a custom, open-source database platform, heavily modified and hardened, running on a standalone machine never connected to any network. He called it **Project Labyrinth**.**Labyrinth** was divided into interconnected sectors, each a pillar of the coming offensive.**Sector A: The Human Cost.** Here, he compiled the dossiers of every verified victim. Chapter 119The blueprint was complete. The machine—Sentinel’s vast, silent engine of acquisition—was laid bare in his mind, every gear, every wire, every chilling protocol mapped. The inheritance, that shimmering miracle that had guided his life for years, was now revealed as the central cog in that machine. It was no longer a question of what had happened to him. It was a question of what **Lucas Johnson** would do next. He stood at a precipice defined by three distinct, terrifying paths.**Path One: Acceptance.** He could play the part. He could stop his investigation, allow the “tests” to conclude, and accept the full inheritance when it was offered. He had charts of SACE's divisions, dossiers on operatives and handlers, financial trails leading to defense contracts and blood minerals, and chilling protocols for non-compliance. But standing back from the vast mosaic of data, a single, coherent image finally emerged. It was no longer a collection of terrifying parts. It was a machine.
