Chapter One

The sun rose over the gleaming skyscrapers and winding streets of Metropolis, the largest city in the nation of Utopia. A city where dreams are brought to life and also where dreams are shattered.

Alex wiped the sleep from his eyes as his alarm blared, stretching out his hand, he slammed on it as he had done every single day. With a low groan, he sat up on the edge of the bed, signaling the start of another long day.

At just 22 years old, he felt the weight of the world on his shoulders. As the only child, he had no one to call, and no father to even remember.

Alex was of average height and build, with messy brown hair and green eyes that shone with equal parts intellect and exhaustion.

Alex's humble abode was a studio apartment on the outskirts of Metropolis. Though cramped, he tried to make the most of the limited space. Against one wall was his single bed, the dark blue comforter always messy from his perpetually exhausted state. His desk and computer setup took up the opposite corner. The desk was scattered with textbooks, notepads, and empty recyclable cups of coffee.

His most prized possession was his state-of-the-art gaming computer, custom built specifically to run resource-heavy VR games, for Alex this was considered spending a fortune on. Two large monitors flanked the glowing tower, hooked up to a scanner that could render Alex's brainwaves into controller inputs. Next to the keyboard sat his well-worn VR headset, specialized haptic gloves, and sensory pads - the tools of immersive gaming.

Though he owned a variety of popular titles, the only game Alex consistently played was Elysium Quest, his favorite VRMMORPG. The expansive fantasy world allowed him to escape from the stress and limitations of his real life. He spent countless hours leveling up his avatar, undertaking quests, getting rich, and exploring the ever-growing realm.

Against the back wall was a small bookshelf packed with science fiction paperbacks, textbooks, school handouts and some other necessary books he got from the second hand stores. These offered another means of escapism for Alex whenever he needed a break from screens. Just like he was an apt gamer, he was also an apt reader for he spent most of his nights deep in books.

His bedside table also held a perpetually overflowing stack of books with topics ranging from programming to physics. Reading helped relax his mind after long days of work and study. While humble, Alex's living space contained his most valuable tools for both entertainment and education.

He shuffled to the bathroom of his cramped studio apartment, splashing cold water on his face before throwing on jeans and a faded t-shirt. After a quick breakfast of toast, he grabbed his backpack and keys to his scooter, heading out the door.

His first stop was Wok This Way, the noodle shop where he worked as a delivery driver. As Alex navigated the dense downtown traffic on his scooter, he thought about how close he was to finishing his Medical degree at Metropolis University.

If only his mother hadn't gotten ill…

The streets of Metropolis were jam-packed as the morning rush hour hit its peak. Endless lines of cars inched along the roads, the honking of horns and screeching of brakes filling the air. People crowded the sidewalks, rushing to subway stations with coffee cups clutched in hand. Alex carefully navigated his scooter through the congested downtown streets to arrive at the noodle shop.

Wok This Way was a small hole-in-the-wall restaurant tucked between towering skyscrapers. The smell of frying oil and savory sauces filled the steamy kitchen. Alex quickly loaded up his shoulder bag with takeout orders and headed back out into the hectic streets. He sped across town, weaving through traffic to deliver piping hot meals to offices and homes.

After his morning route was finished, Alex didn't have time to rest. He hopped back on his scooter and crossed the city to reach the coffee shop for his next shift. The Daily Buzz was a cozy cafe on the college campus where he picked up an afternoon shift as a barista.. During the lunch rush, Alex worked at lightning speed - brewing coffee, steaming milk, and mixing specialized drinks to keep up with the never-ending orders from students and faculty. The repetitive work allowed Alex's mind to wander as he anticipated getting to his evening class on time. The work was tiring but it paid the bills - barely.

As closing time neared, Alex changed into a button-down shirt and slacks in the backroom, hurrying to make it to his evening calculus class on time.

Exhausted from his long day of work, Alex hopped back on his scooter to make the cross-town journey to Metropolis University. As he navigated through rush hour traffic, Alex reflected on the dramatic changes to his education over the past two years.

He had been a star student in the medical program at Metropolis U, earning straight A's with dreams of becoming a doctor. But during his sophomore year, his mother had been diagnosed with a mysterious chronic illness that continued to baffle doctors. Alex made the difficult choice to withdraw from the intense medical program so he could take care of her full-time while also trying to fund her expensive treatments.

Switching to a more conducive program allowed Alex more flexibility to take online courses and night classes around his multiple jobs. But he struggled to maintain his flawless GPA while continually exhausted and stressed about money. Alex was now in his fifth year, having extended his education, but remained determined to graduate with a medical degree soon.

As Alex locked up his scooter and hurried into the lecture hall just in time, he reminded himself this grueling routine was temporary. Once he graduated and got a full-time job, supporting his mother would get easier. He just had to keep pushing himself and clinging to that hope during difficult times like this. Her health and their financial future depended on his perseverance now more than ever.

Just as he slid into his seat in the lecture hall, Alex's phone vibrated with an ominous call from Metropolis General Hospital. He stepped out, bracing himself as the hospital administrator reminded him of the outstanding balance on his mother's treatment, now totaling over $100,000. Alex leaned against the wall, letting the reality of his situation wash over him. With a heavy sigh, he composed himself and headed back to class, determined to keep pushing forward.
