Sometimes the greatest breakthroughs are not born from battle at all, but from the people someone quietly decides to protect.

Night settled gently over the Grand Le Clan. Stars scattered across the dark sky, and a cool breeze drifted through the small courtyard outside Ken's home. Unlike the chaos of the past few days, tonight offered nothing but quiet. No challenges. No jealous rivals looking for a fight. Just stillness.

Ken sat beneath the old tree, turning the high grade Spirit Recovery Pill over in his hand, and could not quite stop himself from smiling. A few months ago, this same courtyard had belonged to someone the whole clan mocked and dismissed. Now people whispered the word genius when his name came up.

*Strange how fast a life can flip on its head,* he thought, still not entirely used to it.

"You have been smiling to yourself for a while now," Mirinda's voice said softly inside his mind.

Ken let his consciousness drift into his soul space, and the familiar silver world unfolded around him, the towering dragon statue standing quiet beneath an endless expanse of stars, and beneath it, Mirinda, silver hair catching the light like it had been spun from moonlight itself.

He settled beside her. "Just thinking," he said.

"About what?" she asked.

"Life," he said simply.

She raised an eyebrow. "That is an extremely broad answer, young Ken."

He laughed. "Fair point. I was mostly thinking about how different everything feels now compared to a few months ago."

She studied him quietly, something thoughtful crossing her expression. "You have changed."

"I have," he agreed.

"No," she said, softer this time. "I mean it. You have truly changed." She turned to face him fully. "When I first saw you in Canyon Valley, you looked like someone carrying the entire world on his shoulders."

He gave a small, wry smile. "I probably was."

"But now," she continued, "you actually smile. More than you probably realize."

That caught him off guard for a second. Had he really changed that much? Maybe he had, at that. His old life had mostly amounted to existing, working, sleeping, surviving one flat day into the next, nothing he had ever truly wanted for himself.

Now he had a mother worth protecting. A promise worth keeping. A dream worth chasing.

And, without quite meaning to, his gaze slid toward Mirinda.

*Someone worth all of it too.*

She caught him staring and immediately looked away. "Why are you looking at me like that?"

"Just thinking," he said again, smiling.

"About what, exactly?"

"If I had never gone to Canyon Valley that day," he said, "I never would have met you."

Mirinda went quiet at that, memory pulling her backward. She remembered that day clearly, wounded, desperate, Upper Realm assassins closing in, already resigned to dying somewhere in that mud. Then a weak young man with nothing but a trash cat spirit had appeared, and instead of running the other direction like anyone sane would, he had saved her.

Even now, she still could not fully explain why.

"You truly are strange, young Ken," she said quietly.

"I hear that a lot," he said, grinning.

A faint smile crossed her lips, and the two of them settled into comfortable silence for a while, the sort that did not need filling.

Eventually, Mirinda spoke again. "Le Ken."

"Hm?"

"Why did you save me?"

He blinked. "You have asked me that before."

"And you never actually answered it properly."

He considered the question for a long moment before finally sighing. "Because I know what it feels like," he admitted.

"What does?"

"Being alone."

Something in her expression went very still.

He looked up at the stars scattered above them. "In my old life, there was someone I made a promise to. Coworkers, people I knew, an entire life I barely thought about while I was living it. I could not help her, though. A lot happened, most of it out of my control." His voice softened, sadness threading through it. "I never actually got the chance to protect someone the way I wanted to."

He paused, then continued more quietly. "When I found you lying there in Canyon Valley, I just could not walk away and pretend I had not seen you."

Mirinda stared at him, catching for the first time a real thread of loneliness hiding beneath his usual easy smile, the same loneliness she understood better than almost anyone alive. She had spent years hunted, clanless, entirely alone.

Without quite deciding to, she shifted a little closer.

"You are not alone anymore," she said.

Ken looked at her. Her face colored slightly, though she did not pull back. "You have your mother. You have friends now." She hesitated. "And—"

"And?"

"You have me."

The whole soul space went quiet for a second. Ken's heart gave an unexpected stutter.

Mirinda seemed to realize what she had just said a half beat too late, her face flooding red. "I mean, as your teacher," she said quickly, looking anywhere but at him. "That is what I meant, obviously."

Ken could not hold back a laugh.

"Stop laughing at me," she snapped, glaring.

"You look adorable when you are flustered," he said, grinning wider.

Her face somehow turned even redder. "You—"

She raised a hand like she genuinely considered smacking him for that, then stopped halfway, sighed instead, and let a reluctant smile slip through anyway.

Watching her like that, something warm settled in Ken's chest, unfamiliar and welcome all at once.

*Maybe this is what happiness actually feels like,* he thought. *Took me two lifetimes to figure that out.*

They kept talking for a long while after that, about the future, about the bet still hanging over his head with the second elder, about the Sect Examination looming closer every day, about everything waiting outside the clan walls neither of them had seen yet.

Then Mirinda's expression shifted, sharp and sudden. "Your Beast Qi," she said.

Ken blinked. "What about it?"

"It is destabilizing."

He checked instinctively, and she was right, Qi moving through his meridians faster than it should have been, restless, gathering pressure.

Her eyes widened. "You are about to break through."

"Wait, what, right now?"

"You have been training without rest," she said. "Refining pills, forging weapons, fighting constantly." A proud smile crossed her face. "Your foundation has finally caught up to everything you have been demanding of it."

Excitement flooded through him, and he dropped into position right where he sat.

"Focus," Mirinda said, all business now.

He nodded, and the Recreation Flame flared to life around him. His Panther spirit rose behind him, dark fur catching the moonlight, eyes flaring brighter as Beast Qi gathered in thick, steady strands, sinking one after another into his body.

He guided the energy as carefully as he could manage, though pain still tore through his meridians without warning, and he clenched his jaw against it. Sweat broke across his forehead as the pressure kept climbing.

"Stay calm," Mirinda urged gently.

"Trying," he managed through gritted teeth.

Then, all at once—

*BOOM.*

A wave of energy tore outward from his body. His Panther spirit let out a roar that shook the courtyard, its form growing visibly larger, eyes burning brighter than before.

Ken opened his eyes slowly, a grin spreading across his face despite the exhaustion.

He had broken through.

*Beast Geek, Level Thirteen.*

Strength coursed through him, sharper senses, denser Qi, even his own body feeling lighter on its feet.

Mirinda beamed at him, pride written plainly across her face. "Congratulations," she said.

"I actually did it," Ken said, laughing breathlessly.

"You worked yourself half to exhaustion for it," she said, "but yes, you did."

He stood, stretching out the last of the tension, then looked over at her. "Thank you," he said.

She blinked. "For what, exactly?"

"For staying with me through all of it."

Mirinda went quiet at that. For years she had known nothing but isolation, and yet this stubborn, strange young man kept thanking her, over and over, for something as small as simply remaining by his side. A gentle smile crossed her face despite herself.

"Then keep getting stronger," she said.

"I will," Ken promised.

"You did make me a promise, remember. To protect me."

He grinned. "I remember every word of it."

She laughed at that, the sound bright and completely unguarded, nothing like the careful composure she usually carried.

For a long while afterward, neither of them said much of anything. They simply sat together beneath the stars, shoulder to shoulder, the quiet settling comfortably around them.

Neither one fully noticed how much smaller the distance between them had grown since that first day in Canyon Valley.

And somewhere quiet, tucked beneath both their ribs, something warm had already begun taking root.

A true enemy does not attack from the front. He waits until everyone doubts you, then strikes exactly where it hurts the most. Ken barely slept that night. The accusation kept circling back through his mind, over and over, refusing to let him rest. Someone claimed he had stolen the clan’s medicinal herbs. The punishment itself did not scare him. What actually stung was that someone had used the Pill Pavilion to do it, the one place where he had finally earned real respect through nothing but his own effort. Standing beneath the old tree in his courtyard before sunrise, Ken slowly circulated his Beast Qi. His cultivation had settled since breaking through to Beast Geek Level 13, and the Shadow Panther Spirit behind him had grown noticeably more solid, dark fur shimmering faintly before sinking back into his body. Inside his soul space, Mirinda Chan watched him quietly. “You have been thinking all night,” she said. Ken nodded. “I keep asking myself one question.” “What question?

  • 11: The Pill That Started a Rivalry

News of the Beast Blaster spread through the Grand Le Clan faster than Ken expected. Wherever he went, someone was already talking about the strange weapon that fired Beast Qi like a martial technique. Some disciples called it a miracle. Others dismissed it outright as a useless toy that could never replace real cultivation. A few elders had apparently started arguing about it behind closed doors, which Ken found more amusing than concerning. He paid the rumors little attention. At the moment, he had better things to focus on, namely a thick book on herbs and medicinal properties, and the quiet courtyard outside his home.Morning breeze drifted through the flowers his mother had planted years ago.
