The hallway was a dim, flickering tunnel of misery. The fluorescent light above flickered with a rhythmic, dying buzz, casting long, jumping shadows across the blood-slicked carpet. Charles didn't hesitate. He stepped over the mangled remains of Mr. Henderson, his boots squelching softly in the visceral remains. The steel pipe he’d scavenged from his kitchen plumbing felt balanced, heavy, and lethal in his grip.

"Come on," Charles whispered, his voice a low, steady hum that lacked any trace of the tremor that had plagued him hours ago. "Show me what you've got."

A creature formerly his elderly neighbor, Mrs. Gable lurched from the alcove near the elevator. Her housecoat was torn to ribbons, her chest a hollowed-out cavern of raw, exposed muscle. She let out a wet, clicking sound, her jaw hanging at an unnatural, shattered angle.

"Hey! Over here, you rotting sack of meat!" Charles snapped, his voice sharp and demanding.

The creature’s milky eyes locked onto him. It shrieked, a sound like tearing wet parchment, and lunged. Charles didn't retreat. He pivoted, using the momentum to swing the steel pipe in a brutal, horizontal arc.

Crack.

The impact was bone-deep. The creature folded, its skull caving in under the force of the blow. It tumbled, sliding across the linoleum, and went still.

"One down," Charles muttered, not even pausing to catch his breath. "Where are the rest of you cowards?"

From behind a half-open door down the hall, a familiar, panic-stricken shout erupted. "Help! Someone, please! Help me!"

Charles paused, his brow furrowing. He recognized that voice. It was Marcus, the guy who had spent the entirety of Charles’s senior year shoving him into lockers and making his life a living hell.

Charles walked toward the sound, his movements calculated and predatory. He peered around the corner of the doorway. Marcus was huddled in the corner of his living room, his leg pinned under a fallen bookshelf. Three of the creatures were crowding him, their hands tearing at his jacket, their teeth snapping at his exposed throat.

"Charles? Oh god, Charles! Is that you? Man, thank God! Help me, dude! I’m going to die!" Marcus shrieked, his face a mask of snot, tears, and pure, unadulterated terror.

Charles leaned against the doorframe, crossing his arms over his chest. He watched, his expression completely blank, as a creature buried its teeth into Marcus’s shoulder.

"Charles! Why are you just standing there? My leg! I can't move! Pull them off me!" Marcus wailed, his voice hitting a high, hysterical pitch.

"You remember the lockers, don't you, Marcus?" Charles asked, his voice calm, conversational, almost bored.

"What? What are you talking about? This isn't the time, man! I’m being eaten alive!"

"You always said I was soft. You said I was a target," Charles continued, watching with a cold, detached fascination as the creatures swarmed over Marcus, their movements frantic and gluttonous. "You spent four years making sure I knew my place. Well, here we are. It’s a bit different, isn't it?"

"I’m sorry! Okay? I’m sorry! Just please, kill them! If you’re a man, help me!" Marcus screamed, his arm thrashing as a creature tore a chunk of flesh from his bicep.

"I’m not a man, Marcus," Charles said, his voice dropping to a whisper. "I’m a survivor. And there’s a difference."

"You sick freak! You’re just going to watch? You’re a monster!"

"No," Charles corrected, his eyes tracking the way the blood sprayed against the wall a dark, rhythmic splatter. "I’m just adapting. You taught me that, remember? Survival of the fittest."

"God, no! Not the neck! Stop!" Marcus’s scream was cut short by a wet, gargling noise as a creature tore into his throat. His limbs went limp, his eyes glazing over as the life bled out of him in a messy, frantic sprawl.

Charles waited until the thrashing stopped. He waited until the creatures were busy, their heads bowed low over the carcass, buried in the feast. He stepped forward, silent as a ghost, and brought the pipe down on the back of each skull with practiced, efficient strokes.

Crack. Crack. Crack.

He felt the change instantly a surge of power through his core, his muscles tightening, the weight of the pipe feeling like a toothpick in his hand. He knelt beside the cooling corpse of his former tormentor. He didn't feel pity. He didn't feel guilt. He felt only the satisfaction of a ledger being balanced.

He reached into Marcus’s jacket, pulling out a heavy, tactical-looking backpack. Inside, he found a stash of protein bars, a hunting knife, and a map of the city’s drainage system.

"Thanks for the gear, asshole," Charles whispered, standing up and shouldering the bag. "You were finally useful for something."

He turned back toward the hallway, his heart rate steady, his focus burning. He had to get to Elena. He had to get her out of this building before the swarm grew too large to handle.

He stepped out of the apartment, the smell of copper filling his lungs. As he started to walk toward the stairwell, he heard a heavy, rhythmic thudding coming from the end of the hall. A man tall, broad-shouldered, wearing a heavy leather jacket was sprinting toward the emergency exit. He didn't look back. He didn't stop for the woman banging on her door, screaming for him to help her. He simply shoved a creature out of his way with brutal force and vanished into the stairwell.

Charles’s eyes narrowed. He recognized that gait, that reckless disregard for everything but his own skin.

"Arthur?" Charles whispered, his breath hitching. "What the hell are you doing here?"

He didn't wait for an answer. He broke into a run, the new surge of strength in his legs propelling him forward. The hallway became a blur of gore and shadow. He hit the heavy fire door, kicking it open with such force the metal hinge groaned in protest.

"If he's running," Charles hissed to himself, his fingers tightening on the handle of his knife, "then he knows exactly how bad this is. And if he's not looking for me, then he’s looking for the exit. We’ll see about that."

He raced down the stairwell, the sounds of chaos echoing from every floor above him. Every step was a decision, every breath a calculation. He reached the landing, pausing to listen. Somewhere above him, the screams of the living were being swallowed by the guttural moans of the dead.

He didn't care about them. Not anymore. He reached into his pocket, his hand brushing against the cold steel of the knife.

"I'm coming, El," he muttered, his voice cold and hard as iron. "And then, we leave this hell behind."

He descended into the dark, the System’s blue light flickering to life before him once more, mapping the path through the slaughter. He was no longer running from the nightmare; he was becoming the nightmare itself, and he wouldn't let anyone not even his own father stand in his way.

Charles yelled, slamming his hand against the console."I’m the one who’s about to put you out of your misery," the voice laughed, cool and detached. "You’ve caused enough trouble for one day. The static in the alleyway still clung to the air like ozone after a lightning strike. Charles stood amidst the gloom, his breath coming in shallow, ragged puffs. He tapped his temple, forcing the System to replay the flickering data stream he’d caught during the scuffle. "You left a breadcrumb, didn't you? Let’s see what you’re hiding."A translucent map bloomed in his vision, highlighting a path toward the St. Jude Medical Center, four blocks away."Medical center," he whispered, a bitter taste rising in his throat. "Of course. Everyone goes to the hospital when the world ends. It’s the perfect trap."He began to move, his boots silent on the cracked pavement. The stairwell was a vertical throat of echoes and metallic groans. Charles descended with a hunter’s grace, his boots barely making a sound on the concrete.
