“Who the hell are you calling a freeloader?” Marcus roared.

Ethan let out a sharp laugh. “If the shoe fits, wear it. And what exactly gives you the nerve to keep pushing me like this?”

Marcus had barely opened his mouth when Ethan’s blade flashed.

The knife drove straight into his thigh.

“AAAAH!”

Marcus screamed and collapsed, clutching his injured leg as blood spread across his trousers. The people behind him rushed forward, some trying to help him up while others stared at Ethan in horror.

In the end, with Cola jumping in to help, Ethan won.It wasn’t exactly a fair victory, but nobody could deny the result.Caleb didn’t seem upset about being betrayed by the very dog he’d trained. Instead, he reached out and rubbed Cola’s head approvingly.“Good boy. If anyone ever messes with him, you protect him.”Cola had gone all out during the fight, throwing himself into the struggle the moment he saw Ethan pinned beneath Caleb.Ethan frowned slightly. “Did he bite you?”“No.” Caleb glanced at Cola with approval. “Dogs can tell right from wrong better than people. Cola knows his limits.”Ethan nodded. That made sense.Dogs could pick up on things humans often overlooked, including changes in someone’s emotions and the intentions behind their actions. Caleb hadn’t harbored any real hostility toward Ethan, so Cola hadn’t actually tried to hurt him.The dog had simply wanted to help his owner win.As the days passed, Ethan’s progress became increasingly obvious. When Maya heard that

Ethan missed the spot.Caleb caught his wrist and shifted his hand slightly. “Here.”Caleb’s jawline was sharply defined, making it easier to find the right position. Ethan needed to coordinate both hands to execute the technique properly.Having studied biomedical science, Ethan already understood the basic anatomy of the human body. Once he pushed past his initial discomfort, he concentrated fully on the lesson, practicing the neck-control techniques on Caleb for nearly half an hour.By then, Poppy had finished her homework. She opened the door, and Cola immediately darted out behind her.The moment the dog saw Ethan holding Caleb’s neck and practicing the twisting motion, he became excited.“Woof!”Cola lunged forward and bumped into Caleb, as though demanding, My turn! Twist mine, too!Ethan stared at him in disbelief.“Can you even do that to a dog?”“Yeah,” Caleb replied.Unfortunately, with Cola constantly interrupting, there was no way to continue the lesson. Caleb crouched do

It took another two days, but all seven water tanks were finally installed.Ryan and Lucas received three between them, while Ethan and Caleb each took two. With everything connected, turning a faucet now produced a steady stream of water.Ethan continued using water from his storage space whenever possible, but he made a point of using the rooftop tanks every day whenever others were around. There was no reason to let anyone suspect that he had access to a far more reliable source. Before they knew it, two months had passed since the flooding began. The second batch of hydroponic vegetables had already been planted, and the first batch had been harvested. Snowy looked as though she might be pregnant again, while the rabbits from her first litter had grown to over a pound each.Maya couldn’t sit still for long. As soon as her injury improved enough, she resumed going out with the others to search for supplies.Ethan, on the other hand, became increasingly reluctant to leave the apartm

Lucas took a bite of the grilled meat and immediately grimaced. “Man, this is salty!”“It has to be,” Ethan explained. “With the humidity this high, salt is one of the few things we can rely on to preserve meat for any length of time.”After showing them how to grill the meat properly, Ethan moved on to braising the pork knuckles, head meat, and bones. Once they returned to the eighteenth floor, they could simply reheat everything and enjoy a proper meal. The aroma alone had Lucas practically drooling. Unable to resist, he grabbed a pork knuckle and bit straight into it.“Careful. It’s hot,” Ethan warned.Lucas barely acknowledged him. He was too busy enjoying the food.By the time the pot came off the stove, the three men and Cola were happily eating bread alongside the freshly cooked meat. Everyone was thoroughly satisfied. With his stomach full and his mouth still running, Lucas grinned at Ethan. “With cooking like this, I wonder which lucky person will end up with you.”Ethan shot

Both sides remained on guard, wary of being double-crossed. Out on the open floodwaters, there was nowhere to hide, making it one of the safest places to conduct a trade. In the end, they exchanged 202 pounds of wild boar meat for an equal weight of good-quality rice. Before parting ways, they arranged to meet again at seven that evening for another exchange.Lucas, Ryan, and Caleb brought the rice back to Crownview Residences.Ethan had already packed everything they would need for the trip, including a frying pan, salt, seasonings, and enough supplies to stay overnight. However, he wasn’t comfortable leaving Maya alone to hold down the fort. After discussing it with the others, he decided that Ryan would stay behind with her.As they headed downstairs, they found Oliver waiting near the stairwell, wearing an unusually friendly smile.“Heading out again?” he asked. “Looks like you’ve got a lot of work ahead of you. Why not let us help? With enough people, we could haul everything bac

After everyone had settled down, they began discussing what to do with the wild boars. They had five whole animals on their hands, and without a refrigerator, preserving that much meat would be a serious problem.“What if we make jerky?” Ryan suggested. “We still have a few boxes of charcoal left from our last supply run.”Ethan shook his head. “That would consume too much charcoal. Besides, we’re talking about five entire boars. How long would it take to process all that meat? The whole neighborhood would smell like a barbecue.”Everyone fell silent, considering their options.“What about the people we traded with before?” Lucas suggested thoughtfully. “They don’t just sell supplies. They buy things, too. We’re running short on food, so why don’t we trade the pork for something else?”They had completed five transactions with the group previously, and the other party had always been reasonably reliable. It wasn’t a bad idea. They had already butchered one of the pigs and packed the m
