62. Night of the Festival
The evening finally came. The town was lit up in beautiful lights.Strings of paper lanterns hung across every street, glowing in soft reds and golds. The stone paths were crowded with people moving from stall to stall. Music drifted through the air from somewhere near the square. The whole town felt alive.Lucian was dressed in a blue suit with touches of gold. His hair was wet and slicked back.He didn't need his blindfold now that the sky had gone dark, so he watched the crowd with his silver eyes, taking in the full view of the festival. The men had already started drinking, clustering around the tavern stalls with mugs of rum.The ladies were dressed in their finest dresses, walking arm in arm. The kids played as usual, chasing each other between the legs of adults. There were games set up at wooden booths. There was music. There was laughter. He could see it all. Most of all, he could feel it.Step. Step. The footsteps came from behind him."Master. I'm ready."Lucian turned aro
61. The Chief Of Trench Town
They moved to the town square. The place was being set up for the festival.Workers were carrying long wooden tables across the cobblestones. Others were hanging red and gold banners from the rooftops. A group of women were arranging flowers around the base of an old stone fountain in the center of the square. Children ran between the workers, chasing each other and getting in the way and mostly the whole place smelled of fresh bread from a nearby bakery and the faint dust of construction.Garrett walked toward a small group of people standing near the fountain. One of them was directing the others, pointing at different spots around the square and giving orders. He was average in height, with grey hair and a worn cap pulled low over his forehead. His clothes were simple but clean. He looked more like a retired soldier than a town chief.Lucian figured that was him. When they got closer, the two other men with the chief nodded and walked away, leaving him alone."Garrett," the ch
60. Festival Preparations
The next day at the inn, Lucian woke early. The sun was barely up, but the streets outside were already buzzing with noise. For a moment, he just lay there on the mattress, staring up at the wooden ceiling. After weeks of sleeping on cold dirt and jagged rocks in the Dead Valley, the simple comfort of a real bed felt strange. His body was fully healed, but his mind was still adjusting to the lack of danger. He got up and dressed in simple clothes. A plain dark coat, worn boots, and dark shades instead of his usual blindfold. The shades covered his eyes perfectly, hiding the silver glow of his False Sight while making him look like any other traveling merchant passing through town. Isabel dressed down as well, wearing a simple long skirt and a grey tunic. She looked like any other village girl running errands. They stepped out of the inn together. The streets of Trench Town had transformed overnight. The cold morning air smelled heavily of sweet baked dough and roasted meats. Colo
59. The wait and Reunion
The inn was loud and crowded.Men sat at round wooden tables, talking over one another, clinking their mugs, and playing card games. The noise filled the room, making it hard to hear anything else.Lucian pushed the front door open and stepped inside. Isabel followed right behind him, keeping close to his shadow.Lucian scanned the room. He didn't have to look for long. Standing near the bar, watching the door like a hawk, was Garrett. He looked older. Tired. His coat was rumpled, and there was a half-empty mug on the counter beside him that looked like it had been sitting there for hours. He had been waiting. Every day. Watching the door for them. When Garrett saw them, he didn't move. He was shocked and so he stared.Lucian walked over to him, his boots tapping steadily on the floorboards. Isabel stayed a step behind.Garrett's eyes moved over Lucian's torn clothes, the dirt, the dried blood. Then he looked at Isabel. The quiet maid who used to serve tea at Starlight Castle was stan
58. Out of The Valley
Lucian and Isabel kept walking until they reached the edge of the Dead Valley.Lucian looked ahead. His False Sight was active. To a normal person, the path forward might have looked completely open. But to him, a shimmering wall stood in their way. It was the seal that kept the monsters locked inside. He took a deep breath. His body was feeling less weak now. With every step he took, he was getting better by the moment. The pain in his bones was fading, and his energy was returning. They stood together by the edge of the seal. Lucian looked over at Isabel. She had a glowing pink aura around her. It shone brightly in his vision. He could easily tell she was excited to get out. She couldn't wait to leave, even though she didn't say a single word about it.Lucian let out a short laugh. He found her silent excitement amusing.Isabel turned her head and looked at him. "Master, why are you laughing?" she asked. He smirked. "It's been a journey, hasn't it?"She gave a small nod, looking bac
57. The Devil has an Offer
Noel's eyes fluttered open.Heat hit her skin first, sharp and biting. She was lying on a hard floor. She pushed herself up onto her elbows and blinked away the blur in her vision. She was in a chariot, but it wasn't made of wood or iron. The frame, the wheels, the rails...it was all made of solid, burning fire.It was moving fast. She raised her head and looked over the edge. Outside, the landscape was nothing but an endless grey desert. There was no sun, no clouds, just a dull sky and miles of cracked, pale dirt kicking up behind the spinning wheels of flame. She looked forward. Dae stood at the front of the chariot. He had his back to her. He wasn't steering the horses. He wasn't holding any reins. He was just standing there, watching the empty horizon roll past."You're awake," Dae said. He didn't turn around. His voice carried easily over the rush of the wind.Noel touched her head. Her fingers brushed against dried blood in her hair. The last thing she remembered was the cav
