"What about the maritime judge’s foreclosure team?" James asked, his eyes gleaming with anticipation. "They have private mercenaries guarding the main perimeter gate."

"Tell them they are on private Ashford property," Derek said, his lips curling into that dark, terrifying mountain smile. "And if they refuse to stand down, throw them into the harbor."

The coastal fog hung low and suffocating over the Charleston industrial docks.

The salt-laden air smelled of rust, stagnant seawater, and heavy diesel fuel. Giant steel shipping containers were stacked four stories high like colorful, rusted apartment buildings, creating a massive, confusing maze along the concrete pier.

At the entrance of Ashford Cargo Bay Four, the heavy chain-link security fence was guarded by eight men dressed in gray tactical gear with assault rifles strapped across their chests. They were not corporate rent-a-cops. They moved with the cold, disciplined posture of former military contractors—Dominic Sterling’s private security division.

Suddenly, through the dense, swirling fog, the low, thundering roar of six heavy engines approached.

Three armored black tactical trucks and two flatbed transport rigs tore around the corner of the warehouse, their high-beam lights cutting through the mist like white spears. They didn't slow down for the checkpoint.

"Alarm! Hit the gate alarm!" the lead mercenary shouted, raising his rifle into the air.

Before the guard could even touch the electronic wall button, the lead armored truck smashed through the heavy steel gate with a deafening crash. The metal pipes bent and snapped like dry twigs, sending sparks flying into the wet darkness.

The trucks screeched to a halt inside the perimeter, forming a tight defensive barricade. Doors flew open, and twenty heavily armed Ashford tactical operatives poured out into the rain, rifles raised, taking tactical positions behind the containers.

"Drop your weapons!" James Vance’s voice boomed through an electronic megaphone, sounding like thunder over the water. "You are trespassing on private property! Drop your weapons and lay flat on the concrete, or we open fire!"

The eight gray-suited mercenaries, realizing they were completely outgunned and surrounded by superior tactical numbers, slowly lowered their rifles and raised their hands in the air, cursing under their breath.

Derek stepped down from the passenger side of the lead armored truck.

He didn't wear a helmet. He didn't carry a rifle. He walked through the damp, cold mist with his hands in his trouser pockets, his dark wool coat billowing behind him like the wings of a predatory raven.

He stopped directly in front of the lead mercenary, who was now kneeling in the mud with his hands behind his head.

"Where is the master manifest for Container Group Delta?" Derek asked quietly.

The guard gritted his teeth, glaring up at Derek’s scarred face. "I don't know what you're talking about, asshole. We work for Sterling Maritime Security. You touch a single lock on these containers, and our lawyers will have you arrested for grand piracy before sunrise."

Derek didn't blink. He calmly turned to James. "Break open Container Forty-Seven."

"On it, Boss," James nodded.

Two Ashford security men rushed forward with a heavy hydraulic metal cutter. They clamped the hardened steel jaws around the heavy commercial lock of the massive blue shipping container marked DELTA-47. With a high-pitched whine of hydraulic pressure, the hardened steel shackle snapped with a loud bang.

The men pulled the heavy iron doors open.

Inside, illuminated by the tactical flashlights, were dozens of long, olive-drab military transport crates strapped tightly to wooden pallets.

James stepped inside with a crowbar, jammed the metal edge under the lid of the nearest crate, and pried it open with a loud splinter of pine wood.

He looked inside, whistled softly, and reached his hand in. When he turned back toward Derek, he was holding a brand-new, military-grade satellite telemetry scrambler—the exact type of electronic warfare hardware used by deep-state defense units.

"Bingo, Derek," James said, stepping out of the container with the black hardware in his hands. "This is unauthorized military hardware. There are enough illegal weapons in this single container to put Dominic Sterling in a federal prison for fifty years."

Derek walked over, looking down at the stolen military tech. A cold feeling of absolute satisfaction settled into his chest.

"Seal the container," Derek ordered. "Load every single crate onto our transport rigs. We are moving this entire shipment to a secure private bunker outside the city."

"What do we do with Sterling’s men?" James asked, pointing at the kneeling guards.

"Tie them to the fence and leave them for the morning dock shift," Derek replied without turning around. "Let Dominic Sterling know that the rent on his storage space has officially expired."

Derek turned to walk back to his truck, feeling the weight of the night finally shifting into a calculated victory. He had reclaimed his house, purged his corrupt board of directors, and seized the very illegal leverage that Dominic Sterling needed to survive.

Suddenly, a loud, sharp vibration buzzed from the inner pocket of Derek's coat.

Derek stopped in his tracks.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out the old satellite phone—the same reinforced military-grade device that James had recovered from his study desk earlier that evening.

The screen was glowing brightly in the dark coastal fog.

There was no phone number displayed on the caller ID. There were no country codes.

In the center of the green digital display, a single line of bold text flickered repeatedly:

CALLER: UNKNOWN - PRIORITY ENCRYPTED PROTOCOL 0

Derek’s breath caught in his throat. His knuckles tightened around the cold metal casing. Priority Protocol Zero was an emergency private radio frequency that had only ever been assigned to one person in the entire world—the personal comms channel of Arthur Ashford.

Derek looked at James, whose face had suddenly gone pale as a sheet.

Slowly, Derek pressed the speaker button and brought the phone to his ear.

"Derek," a voice came through the speaker.

The voice was not Raymond’s. It was not Dominic Sterling’s.

It was a voice Derek had not heard in fifteen long years—a deep, rasping, aristocratic voice that carried the unmistakable, terrifying tone of his late father.

"You survived the mountain, my boy," the voice said with a chilling, quiet laugh that froze Derek’s blood to pure ice. "I always knew you were the only son worthy of carrying this family's bloodline. But you should have stayed dead, Derek... because what is coming for Charleston tonight is something you cannot defeat."

The line clicked dead.

Resting on the empty vault floor was a single piece of heavy parchment paper, held down by a black combat knife driven an inch deep into the steel plating.Written across the paper in bold, dripping red ink was a message addressed directly to Derek:“Welcome to the family, nephew. James Vance frowned, tapping the encrypted receiver. "That’s strange... It’s a direct priority dispatch from the Asheville Medical Trauma Center. The hospital where we sent Mr. Bone." Derek’s heart seized. He spun around instantly, stepping into the cockpit. "Put it on speaker. Is Earl all right?" James hit the toggle. A doctor’s voice, tight with anxiety and confusion, came through the speaker: "Mr. Ashford? Mr. Ashford, are you there?" "This is Derek Ashford," Derek said, his knuckles turning white on the dashboard. "How is Earl Bone? Did the surgery succeed?" "Mr. Ashford... the surgery was a complete success," the doctor stammered, his breath trembling over the static. "We repaired the chest wound. Mr. Bone was fully conscious twenty minutes ago. But... something impossible just happened." "Speak clearly, Doctor!" Derek demanded, his voice rising in sudden alarm. "Ten minutes ago, an unmarked black medical convoy with top-secret federal diplomatic clearance arrived

The salt spray of Charleston Harbor tasted like bitter poison on Derek Ashford’s tongue. The deck of The Neptune Prime gave another sickening groan beneath his leather boots, tilting further into the churning black water. White foam washed across the steel plates around his ankles, but Derek did not look down at the rising tide. His eyes were locked on the phone screen in his palm. "Six decommissioned tactical nuclear warheads... proximity detonators set to trigger the moment the hulls touch the Ashford docks!" Marcus Thorne’s frantic wail continued to buzz through the speaker, competing with the emergency harbor sirens screaming across the distant city skyline. Beside the ruined helicopter pad, Raymond and Vanessa were huddled against the steel safety netting like wet, shivering rats. When those words echoed out of the phone's speaker, Raymond let out a high, broken shriek that sounded barely human. He fell flat on his stomach in the rising water, clawing at the deck plates with

James shouted through a megaphone, throwing a heavy tactical rescue line across the water to the sinking ship's bow.Derek secured the line around the deck capstan, guiding his mother into the arms of two elite security divers who had swum across the narrow gap with an inflatable rescue raft."Get her to Ashford Manor,"

The crystal glass of scotch in his left hand slipped from his fingers, crashing against the polished steel deck and shattering into tiny pieces."Shut it down!" Arthur roared at his bridge officers, his deep baritone cracking into a frantic screech. "Override the medical network!
