A thousand years ago, the Strongest Demon Emperor, Xar'thos, nearly plunged the cultivation world into eternal darkness, only to be defeated and sealed by an alliance of holy sects in a heroic sacrifice. Now, after a millennium has passed, the Demon Emperor is reborn as a poor youth named Aron in a remote village—without power, without memories, and without any remnants of his past glory. The world has forgotten him, and the holy sects have enjoyed a fragile peace, establishing their dominance without threat. However, fate has other plans. As Xar'thos's memories begin to return, an ancient entity known as the "Demon Empire System" activates within him. This system is more than just a guide; it is the key to rebuilding his shattered empire, granting him unique abilities to revive forbidden cultivation techniques, recruit loyal followers, and most crucially, attract powerful women with demonic potential to become his Demon Consorts—the pillars of his new strength and authority. Starting from zero, Aron—who is now slowly reverting to Xar'thos—begins a perilous journey to reclaim what is rightfully his. Xar'thos's journey takes him from a helpless youth to a rising ruler of darkness, rebuilding his army from the shadows. He gathers followers, forms unexpected alliances, and establishes a hidden base of demonic power. However, his rise does not go unnoticed. The holy sects that once sealed him begin to sense the echoes of a long-lost demonic aura. They send agents to investigate, sparking initial clashes that reveal weaknesses and ancient secrets among his old enemies.

Chapter 1: Echoes from Nothingness

"Move it, Aron! The sun isn't going to wait for your lazy bones to catch up!"

Silas spat a thick glob of tobacco onto the dry earth, his eyes narrow and impatient.

"I'm moving, Silas. Just give me a second to breathe," I muttered, wiping the stinging sweat from my brow with a frayed sleeve.

"Breathe? You've been breathing since dawn. What you haven't been doing is hauling. My grandmother chops faster than you, and she's been under the dirt for three winters."

"The wood is wet today. It's heavier than usual."

"Heavy? It's just pine, boy. Stop whining and get that bundle to the cart before the merchant leaves without us."

I gripped the rough hemp rope, the fibers biting into my calloused palms.

"Another few copper coins," I whispered to myself. "Just enough for a bowl of watery soup and a dry bed."

"What's that you're mumbling?" Silas barked.

"Nothing. I said I'm coming."

The mountain air was usually crisp, but today it felt heavy, suffocating even.

"Hey, Aron. You look pale. Paler than a ghost in a flour mill."

"I... I feel a bit dizzy, that's all."

"Great. Just what I need. A sickly partner. Take the next load and don't you dare drop it."

As I reached for the next stack of lumber, a sudden spike of heat shot through the base of my skull. It wasn't like any headache I'd ever had. It felt like someone had driven a red-hot needle into my brain.

"Urgh... damn it," I gasped, dropping to one knee.

"Aron? If you're faking this to get a break, I swear I'll dock your pay!"

The world around me didn't just blur; it shattered.

The green pine needles turned to pillars of black fire. The dusty path became a sea of skulls.

“Rise... Your Majesty...”

"Who said that?" I cried out, clutching my head. "Silas? Stop joking around!"

"I didn't say anything, kid! What's wrong with you? Get up!"

Silas's voice sounded miles away, muffled like he was underwater.

“The throne remains vacant. The stars bleed in your absence.”

"Shut up! Get out of my head!" I screamed, rolling onto the dirt.

"He's lost it. He's finally gone mad from the heat," Silas backed away, his face twisting in a mix of fear and annoyance.

I wasn't in the forest anymore.

Images flashed before my eyes in violent bursts. A man standing on a balcony of obsidian, his cape billowing like liquid night. An army of shadow giants kneeling before him, their armor forged from dead stars.

"This... this isn't mine," I gasped. "I'm just Aron. I chop wood. I live in a shack!"

“You were Xar'thos. You were the Void made flesh.”

"I don't know that name! Go away!"

"Who are you talking to, Aron?" Silas shouted. "There's nobody there!"

A flash of blinding purple light erupted behind my eyelids.

[NOTIFICATION: DEMON EMPIRE SYSTEM INITIALIZING...]

"What? What is that?" I asked, staring at the translucent window hovering in the air.

[SYNCHRONIZING REINCARNATED SOUL...]

"Get away from me! Is this magic? Did the sorcerers in the city curse me?"

[99%... 100%.]

[SOUL RECOVERY COMPLETE. WELCOME BACK, EMPEROR XAR'THOS.]

"My name is Aron! Not... Xar-whatever!"

“The name is irrelevant. The power is absolute.”

The voice didn't come from the forest. It came from the core of my soul, cold and hollow.

"I'm having a stroke. That's it. I'm dying of a stroke," I whimpered.

"Kid, you're scaring me now. Get up or I'm leaving you here for the wolves!" Silas grabbed my shoulder, but the moment he touched me, a shock of dark energy surged outward.

"GAH!" Silas flew back, hitting a tree trunk with a sickening thud.

"Silas? Silas! Oh god, did I do that?"

I looked at my hands. They were shaking, but they weren't pale anymore. A faint, dark vein pulsed under the skin of my wrist.

“A mere mortal should not touch the Divine Shadow.”

"Divine shadow? I'm a woodcutter! I barely have enough boots to walk in!"

[NEW MISSION ALERT]

"A mission? What kind of hallucination gives missions?"

[OBJECTIVE: SURVIVE THE AWAKENING. REWARD: NOVICE STARTUP PACKAGE.]

"I don't want a package! I want this to stop! My head is burning!"

"Pain is the forge. Embrace it, or turn to ash.”

"No! Please! Stop it!"

I gripped the earth, my fingernails digging into the dirt until they bled. The visions came back, stronger this time.

I saw myself—no, I saw him—standing over a conquered world. He didn't look happy. He looked bored. He raised a hand, and a mountain disintegrated.

"That's not me... it can't be me," I wept.

[EMPIRE SYSTEM: EMOTIONAL VOLATILITY DETECTED. APPLYING MENTAL CALM...]

Suddenly, the panic vanished. It didn't fade; it was deleted. I felt a terrifying wave of cold indifference wash over me.

My breathing slowed. My heart rhythm steadied.

"That's... better," I heard myself say, but the voice sounded deeper, smoother.

"Aron? You okay?" Silas groggily stood up, rubbing his shoulder. "What the hell was that? You have some kind of static in your shirt?"

I turned my head to look at him. For a moment, I didn't see Silas. I saw a 'Level 1 Human - Bio-Resource.'

"Stay back, Silas," I said. My own voice startled me. It was too calm.

"What are you looking at me like that for? You look like you want to eat me."

"I said stay back! Something is wrong with me!"

The indifference shattered as the cold voice spoke again.

“Your Empire has crumbled into myth. The Heavens have forgotten to fear you. Do you accept the return of your crown?”

"Accept it? If it means these voices stop, then yes! Take it back! Whatever it is, just go!"

[COMMAND ACCEPTED.]

[REBORN EMPEROR CLASS ACTIVATED.]

[RE-LINKING WITH SOUL-BIND CONSORTS: SEARCHING... FAILED (Target unreachable in current dimension).]

"Consorts? What are you even talking about? I've never even talked to a girl from the next village!"

“They are waiting, Xar'thos. They are trapped in the frost and the silence. You left them behind.”

"I didn't leave anyone behind! I've lived in this village since I was five!"

I felt a sudden rush of wind, though the trees didn't move.

The system window turned red.

[WARNING: HOST STRENGTH INSUFFICIENT FOR SOUL DENSITY.]

[COLLAPSE IMMINENT. ENTERING STASIS MODE...]

"Wait, collapse? What collapse?"

“Sleep, little spark. When you wake, the world will begin to rot.”

"No, wait! Silas! Help me!"

Everything went pitch black. I felt myself falling into an abyss of nothingness, the sounds of the forest dying out until there was only silence.

"Aron! Hey! ARON!"

I opened my eyes. Silas was standing over me, looking terrified.

"Is it over?" I whispered.

"Is what over? You've been staring at the sun for ten minutes like a statue. I thought you were dead!"

"Ten minutes? It felt like... centuries."

"I don't care how it felt. Get up. We're going home. No more work today. You're cursed or something."

I sat up, feeling a strange weight in my chest. I looked at the ground. There, hovering just an inch above the dirt where I had collapsed, was a small, glowing black crystal.

"Do you see that, Silas?"

"See what? The dirt? Yeah, I see plenty of it."

"The crystal. Right there."

Silas looked at the spot, then back at me, his face turning pale again. "Aron, there's nothing there. Stop it. You're giving me the creeps."

I reached out and touched the crystal. It wasn't cold. It was frozen.

As my finger grazed it, the crystal dissolved into my skin.

[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION: STARTUP PACKAGE OPENED.]

[RECEIVED: BASIC DEMONIC CULTIVATION ART - 'ECHOES OF THE ABYSS'.]

"I'm not crazy," I whispered.

"What did you say?" Silas asked, already walking toward the cart.

"I said... I think I'm starting to remember."

"Remember what?"

I looked at Silas, and for a split second, I felt a hunger—not for food, but for something else. Power. Dominion.

"Nothing. Let's just go home, Silas."

"Fine by me. Just don't expect to get paid for those last three logs."

As I walked behind the cart, the world felt different. The shadows beneath the trees seemed to twitch, reaching out toward my boots as if trying to greet an old friend.

“The path is long, Xar'thos,” the voice whispered, fainter now.

"My name is Aron," I told the wind.

“For now,” the voice replied. “But the Abyss doesn't forget its owner.”

I touched my chest, right where my heart beat against my ribs. It felt slower. Heavier.

Somewhere in the back of my mind, a door had been opened, and whatever was on the other side was already beginning to seep out.

"Wait for me, Silas!" I called out, running to catch up.

I tried to act normal. I tried to look like the same scared boy.

But as the sun dipped behind the mountains, casting long, twisted shadows over the valley, I knew.

The dream was over. The nightmare had just begun.
