CHAPTER 35
With Mars Bentley finally behind bars, and the shadow of his threats lifted for good, even though Cameron Bentley wouldn't stop until he got his son out, even thought that would be very difficult, Darius allowed himself, to breathe properly without having to think of what plot someone is orchestrating to bring him down next. But the relief was hollow. Every time he exhaled, it caught somewhere in his chest, tangled with the memory of Rhea's face the night everything fell apart. The disgust in her eyes and the silence that followed him all the way home, which still wrapped around him till today. He sat sprawled across the couch, staring blankly at his phone, thumb hovering uselessly over her contact photo. "You've been staring at that screen for twenty minutes," Charlie said, dropping into the armchair across from him with a bag of chips. "You gonna call her, or are we just gonna admire her contact picture together?" Darius exhaled sharply, tossing the phone onto the cushion

CHAPTER 33
The days that followed blurred into a slow, grinding recovery. Two cracked ribs, deep bruising along his spine where the pipe had caught him, a jaw so swollen he could barely chew solid food for the first three days. Natasha checked on him constantly, half nurse and half quiet, watchful sentinel, while Charlie kept the apartment stocked with ice packs and painkillers and terrible jokes meant to make the silence more bearable. But no amount of ice could numb the ache that came every time Darius picked up his phone and dialed Rhea's number, only to hear it ring out into voicemail again and again. He texted. He called. He even had to message her manager, only to be told she didn't wish to speak to him. He didn't chase harder than that. Not because he'd stopped caring — if anything, the silence gnawed at him more than his ribs did — but because he understood, with a bitter kind of clarity, that there was nothing he could say to her yet that wasn'
CHAPTER 32
The drive back to the airport felt longer than the entire night that had come before it. Darius kept both hands steady on the wheel, though every part of him ached to reach across the console and take Rhea's hand, to say something, anything, that would erase the look that had settled on her face the moment she pulled away from him in that basement. He stole a quick glance at her, his jaw tightening as a sharp flare of pain radiated across his swollen face. «I actually do not work for those people I work for, I am an Argent, but I have to keep the identity hidden.» The words burned on the tip of his tongue, but he forced himself to swallow them back down. Revealing his true identity to her would only place a massive target on her back. Instead, he had to stick to the cover story he had manufactured—that he worked as a high-level distributor for a powerful mafia syndicate, using their resources to settle his scores. More convenient. But Rhea
CHAPTER 31
The blade rested against Rhea's collarbone, and for five full seconds, the only sound in the basement was the low electronic hum of the camera and the ragged, terrified breathing filtering through the tape over her mouth. Darius did not look at the confession sheet that had been placed on his lap. He looked at the scarred man, and when he spoke, his voice was startlingly calm. The kind of calm that unsettled people more than screaming ever could. "Before you do something you can't undo," Darius said, "you should know exactly who's paying your bills, and exactly how much bigger my number is than his." The scarred man's smirk faltered, just slightly. "Cute. Thirty seconds is ticking, kid. Don't dare me." "Take the thirty seconds," Darius said, "and use it to think. Not to cut her. To think." His eyes flicked, deliberate and unhurried, toward the shorter man by the tripod, then back. "You guys are not killers. You said it yourselves — dead bodies bring
CHAPTER 30
"Get your hands off her!" Darius roared. Rhea screamed, clawing at the seatbelt, at the door frame, at anything, as gloved hands closed around her arm and dragged. Darius didn't hesitate. Adrenaline surged through his veins as he lunged across the backseat, driving his elbow forcefully into throat of the man holding Rhea. The man gagged, releasing Rhea, and Darius followed up with a heavy right hook that knocked the assailant off the running board and onto the pavement. "Darius, look out!" Rhea shrieked. Darius spun around just in time to catch a blow to his ribs from a second attacker who had opened his side of the door. Gasping for air, Darius pushed through the sharp pain, tackling the man to the asphalt. They crashed onto the ground, Darius delivering two swift, weakening blows to the attacker's ribs. Darius had always been a skilled fighter, honed by years of hard labor and street survival, but he was severely outnumbered. A third
