Lucian sat on the cold floor of the prison cell, he'd been locked in there for up to five hours.

“Can I at least get a phone call?” He shouted at the officers passing by.

“Shut your trap.” Other inmates yelled back at him.

Lucian could still not fathom the thought of Adriana calling the cops on him.

“A restraining order.” He said to himself.

Keeping him away from his child was one thing he'd never never settle for.

Lucian swore to fight for Maya's custody to the bitter end.

An officer approached the cell Lucian was in

“You're allowed to have just one phone call. And it should be to whoever would take care of your bail.”

They'd taken his sweatshirt and slippers.

Fortunately for him, Amira had written her phone number ona piece of paper for him before leaving earlier that day.

Two hours later, Amira was tapping her foot right in front of the police counter as she waited for Lucian to show up.

“Police cell really?” She scolded in a hushed tone

“I didn't know that Adriana would call the cops, all I did was go see Maya.”

Amira scribbled her signature on the nail form and stormed out of the station.

“Thank you for coming.” Lucian said slowly

“Don't thank me yet, I just spent five thousand dollars on bail. That money was meant for rent and other stuff.”

Lucian looked up confused.

“I'd pay you back, it isn't that much.”

Amira stopped mid tracks, it was dark outside, but the streetlights illuminated everywhere.

She swirled on her feet and faced Lucian, hands outstretched.

“I'm confused, what do you want me to do? Shake you?”

“Five thousand dollars, since you say it's too small.”

Lucian scratched his head awkwardly.

“I didn't mean I'd give it to you now, but I'll go back to Vincent. Get some money, I should still have some.”

Amira yanked her head, kicked imaginary dust in the air.

Out of frustration she yanked at her hair.

“You still don't get it, do you Lucian? You have nothing anymore. Not a single dime.”

She emphasized on the word dime with a stretch of her hand.

Lucian knew that, he just didn't need her to spell it out for him.

“Didn't they tell you?” She asked.

“They did, but I didn't commit any of those crimes. I know I can't remember, but it doesn't just sound like something I'd do .”

Amira’s eyes clouded.

“Unfortunately, Lucian. You did.”

She whipped out her phone and showed him what he had been dreading to do since he went to Cross Ventures.

Old news headlines about him, the former business Mogul and the shady deals that almost ruined his company.

“Vincent was the one that testified against you in court, with strong evidence.”

Lucian's hands shook as he scrolled through the screen of the phone.

When he heard what Vincent did, his hands paused.

“Vincent? He did that?”

“Yes, he did, and before you'd think he betrayed you. He didn'. I checked through the evidence myself. They all came through.”

Lucian's head spun and he almost lost his balance.

Vincent still betrayed him by taking his family, that was unforgivable.

“So, I am a fraudster, I ruined my family and my own company.”

“Unfortunately so.” Amira added without remorse.

Lucian stared daggers as he looked into her eyes

She was not making matters better with her words.

“Then why did you help me? No one wants to associate with me. Not even my daughter.”

Amira shrugged calmly.

“You might have your reasons for doing them. I always told myself that the reasons could be justifiable.”

This time around, when Lucian looked into her eyes.

He felt the dying ember of hope flicker in his chest.

“I don't know where you got that from, but it did make me feel a little bit better.”

“I'm glad it did, let's get out of here.”

They got into Amira's car and she started the engine.

“I'm going to get Maya back though.” Lucian said on their way.

“Hold your horses big man, you can't do that now, not when there's a court order saying you can't.”

“The court didn't hear me out.”

“Not with your record of being in jail, they won't. You need to focus on other things right now.”

“Like what? I don't even have a single cash stashed somewhere to start anything.” He hissed

“Get a job.”

“A job.” Lucian cracked.

“Please, I own jobs, I don't work them.”

“Okay, do as you please, you have till the weekend to find your own place.”

“Excuse me, Amira, come on. I just said you are the only one I have.”

“Yeap, but you can't continue to crash at my place, you are a man.”

Lucian thought about it silently.

If he wants to get Maya, he needs to have something.

As much as he hated the idea of working for someone, he really didn't have any option.

“Fine.” He grumbled

“I'll find a job.”

*Two weeks after*

Lucian slumped on the couch in Amira's living room, now turned to his sleeping space.

“No one wants to hire me, I am so exhausted. At this rate, I am never going to find a job.”

“Keep applying, it took me almost a year to land a stable job after you fired me.”

Lucian rolled his eyes, he was never going to hear the end of it.

Most of them didn't want him because they recognized him as soon as he stepped foot in.

They tossed the potential he had in the trash and asked him to leave in a rude way.

“We don't need someone who'd run the company to the ground.” The manager spat rudely.

“I can speak to a friend of mine for you, I'm sure he'd be happy to help.” Amira cut into Lucian's thoughts.

She tapped on her phone and made a call.

“He said he'd like to see you in person.”

Lucian was more than happy he would be getting a shot at a job.

The man, Mr Nixon, sized Lucian up from head to toe.

“Hmmmph, he's got the muscles for the job. He's hired.”
