Humans think Hell University is a prestigious pathway to power. Supernaturals know it’s a gilded prison where one rule reigns supreme: Never reveal what you are. Rowan Hawthorne, black-sheep heir of the ancient Hawthorne Vampire Dynasty, spent years playing the role of a weak, low-tier vampire. He kept his head down, protecting a fragile group of outcasts: a hot-headed hybrid, a human who doesn't know he carries hunter blood, a seer witch, and a wolf princess. But when a secret network of hunter professors begins framing supernaturals to provoke a campus-wide war and awaken an ancient monster in the catacombs, Rowan stops playing diplomat. Unlocking the Ancestral Monarch System hidden deep within his veins, Rowan's true rank is finally revealed. The elders who looked down on him, the hunters who target his friends, and the ancient monstrosities beneath the school will learn a fatal lesson: Rowan wasn't keeping the peace because he was weak. He was holding back to keep them alive.

The Rule of Silence

To the human world, Hell University was a beacon of academic perfection—a centuries-old sanctuary of gothic architecture, ivy-draped towers, and elite prestige. To the supernaturals forced to walk its halls, it was a gilded cage governed by a single, sacred law: Never reveal what you are.

Rowan Hawthorne stood near the edge of the obsidian sparring ring, his obsidian-black eyes calm as he adjusted the cuffs of his dark grey uniform blazer. Surrounding the perimeter, dozens of high-tier students—pureblood vampires in velvet blazers, upper-tier werewolf enforcers, and snobbish warlock elites—cheered as two vampire nobles clashed in the center.

"Look at him," a sneering voice echoed from behind.

Julian Vance, a third-year pureblood from a prominent noble branch, stepped into Rowan’s field of vision. Julian’s pale skin practically glowed with arrogance, his golden ring glinting under the arena lamps. "The disgraced prodigy of the Hawthorne Dynasty. Tell me, Rowan, did your father kick you out because your blood-density score couldn't even break the lower third tier?"

A few surrounding vampires chuckled. In supernatural society, blood-density determined authority, raw magical output, and standing. Rowan’s official campus assessment had registered as a weak, bottom-tier baseline—barely enough to spark a flicker of blood magic.

"My score is my own business, Julian," Rowan replied smoothly, his tone lacking any trace of anger. "And the ring is open if you came to practice, not talk."

Julian’s eyes flashed a dangerous crimson. "Careful, outcast. Without your family name protecting you, you're just another useless leech sitting on a throne of dust."

Rowan merely offered a faint, polite smile and stepped backward, letting the insult glide off him like water off marble.

Julian scuffed his boot against the flagstones, clearly disappointed by the lack of a scene, before strutting toward the central ring to boast.

Rowan turned his back on the crowd and walked toward the courtyard, his inner thoughts far colder than his peaceful exterior let on. He wasn't bothered by the insults. In fact, he preferred it this way. Being dismissed as a weak outcast was the perfect camouflage.

Underneath the courtyard’s shadow, four figures were waiting near the central fountain.

"He was talking noise again, wasn't he?" Gideon Vale grunted, leaning his broad shoulders against a stone pillar. Gideon was a hybrid—a dangerous blend of werewolf and vampire bloodlines—wearing a torn leather jacket over his standard uniform. His eyes flickered amber in the dim light, practically radiating contained violence. "Just give me the word, Rowan. I'll break his jaw before curfew."

"Save your energy, Gideon," Rowan said, stepping into the circle. "Public fights draw eyes. Eyes bring attention. Attention brings council officers."

"He's right, Gid," Briar Frost said softly. The werewolf princess sat on the lip of the fountain, her silver-blonde hair catching the moonlight. "We can't afford trouble. The tension on campus has been getting worse all week."

"Because the humans are getting suspicious," Selene Ashcroft murmured, not looking up from her small leather journal. Her fingers traced silver runes on the paper. As a seer witch, her eyes always carried a distant, troubled haze. "I felt a fracture in the ley lines near the East Quad this morning. Something dark is stirring beneath the school."

"You guys worry too much," a cheerful voice broke in.

Declan Mercer jogged up the steps, holding a paper bag filled with hot pastries from the cafeteria. Declan was the only human in their circle—kind, dependable, and completely oblivious to the fact that his four closest friends were legendary creatures of the night.

"I brought food," Declan grinned, handing a warm pastry to Briar. "And before you ask, no, Professor Hale didn't catch me sneaking out of economics early. That man has eyes like a hawk, I swear."

Rowan’s eyes narrowed imperceptibly at the mention of Victor Hale, but his expression remained warm as he clapped Declan on the shoulder. "Good work. Eat up, then head back to the dorms. The temperature is dropping fast tonight."

"Yeah, yeah, Dad," Declan laughed, taking a bite. "I just need to swing by the East Library to drop off Hale's research notes. I'll see you guys in the morning."

Declan waved and headed off across the dark cobblestone quadrangle toward the old library wing.

Rowan watched him go. His instincts, polished over years of hidden training, tingled with a sharp, unwelcome static.

"Selene," Rowan spoke quietly, his gaze fixed on Declan's retreating back. "What did you see in your reading today?"

Selene closed her journal with a sharp snap. Her voice dropped to a barely audible whisper. "Shadows, Rowan. Armed shadows waiting in the dark. A trial of fire."

Rowan didn't wait another second. "Gideon, take Briar and Selene back to the south wing dorms. Keep your doors locked."

"Rowan, what's wrong?" Briar asked, standing up straight.

"Just trust me," Rowan said.

Without another word, Rowan melted into the shadows of the gothic archway, his body moving with a speed that defied human—and standard vampire—biology.

The East Quadrangle was shrouded in heavy fog. The towering stone pillars cast long, knife-like shadows across the stone walkway.

Declan walked briskly, his leather satchel slung over his shoulder, humming a faint tune. He was halfway across the courtyard when the air around him grew unnaturally frigid. The streetlamps flickered once, twice, and died.

Click.

The sound of metal stepping on cobblestone echoed from the fog.

Declan paused, turning around. "Hello? Is someone there?"

Three figures stepped out from the darkness. They wore sleek, tactical body armor beneath non-descript gray coats. Their faces were obscured by dark ballistic masks, but what caught Declan's eye were the weapons in their hands—reinforced silver batons and compact crossbows loaded with glowing, rune-carved bolts.

"Declan Mercer," the lead operative said, his voice synthesized and flat. "Clear the area."

"Who are you guys?" Declan stepped back, his pulse spiking. "This is private campus property—"

"Target is human," the second operative interrupted, raising a crossbow. "Command gave clear orders. No human witnesses during live testing. Neutralize him."

Declan’s heart slammed against his ribs. He turned to run, but a third figure materialized from the fog ahead, blocking his escape route. The lead operative raised a silver stun-baton, electrical sparks crackling along its edge, and swung it directly toward Declan’s temple.

Declan closed his eyes, bracing for the impact.

BOOM!

A shockwave of sheer kinetic pressure detonated in the air.

Declan opened his eyes. The operative’s baton hadn't hit him. In fact, the operative was frozen mid-swing, his arm locked in place by a pale, slender hand.

Rowan stood between Declan and the attacker. His eyes, usually a calm dark brown, pulsed with an unholy crimson light that bled into the dark fog.

"Rowan...?" Declan gasped, stumbling back in shock. "How did you—"

Before the operatives could react, Rowan shifted his grip. With a effortless flick of his wrist, he shattered the lead operative’s reinforced armor, sending the man flying thirty feet backward into a stone pillar. The man hit the granite and slumped to the ground, unconscious.

"Hostile supernatural! Open fire!" the second operative yelled, pulling the trigger on his crossbow.

The silver bolt tore through the fog at blinding speed. Rowan didn't even move his feet. He reached out with two fingers, pinching the glowing bolt out of mid-air millimeter before it touched his neck. The silver sizzled against his skin, but the flesh didn't burn—it instantly repaired itself.

Rowan snapped the silver bolt in half and dropped the pieces onto the stones.

"Who sent you?" Rowan’s voice vibrated with an ancient, terrifying resonance that caused the remaining two operatives to drop to their knees, their muscles seizing up under an invisible, overwhelming gravity.

"You... you're not a low-tier..." the operative choked out, gasping for air as Rowan’s aura weighed down on his chest like an anvil.

"Answer me," Rowan commanded coldness.

Before the operative could speak, a faint blue light flared on the men's collars. A self-destruct mana circuit burned through their armor, knocking them both unconscious before any secrets could be spilled.

Rowan stood amidst the fallen attackers, his breathing perfectly steady. The crimson glow in his eyes faded back to black as he turned to look at Declan.

Declan was frozen on the ground, staring at Rowan in absolute disbelief. "Rowan... what was that? What are you?"

Before Rowan could answer, a cold, mechanical chiming echoed directly inside his head, audible only to him:

[Notice: Threat Neutralized.]

[Conditions Met: Hostile Hunter Network Intercepted.]

[System Awakening: Ancestral Blood Monarch System Initializing...]

[Current Monarch Purity: 1%. Unlocking Base Skill: Absolute Blood Pressure.]

Rowan looked down at his hand, feeling an ancient, long-dormant heat igniting deep within his veins. The game of hiding was over.

He looked at Declan, his voice firm and unwavering. "Get up, Declan. The war has already started."
