Amira took the car straight to Maya's school. She went without the driver and parked a little distance from the school's gate.

She didn't step out of the car but waited inside instead. In the past, when Adriana and Lucian were too busy to spend time with Maya, they would send Amira with gifts to pacify the little girl.

Although Maya was never thrilled about it, she had come to like Amira in a certain soft way.

Amira wondered if that had changed over the years. She had seen how defiant the girl'

After careful consideration, Lucian felt it was finally time to reveal himself to the public. No more hiding behind the Nixon name.He had used it as an appreciation for what Mr. Nixon had done for him, believing in his potential when nobody else did. They still talked from time to time, but the old man was not interested in the bigger business. He was fine where he was.But Lucian made sure he was receiving a fair share of the company's income for his upkeep. It was Lucian's money that had started Nixon Holdings, after all.Lucian called for a renowned tailor to come do his fitting in the penthouse. Amira was also there with him. There were times she stayed longer in Lucian's penthouse than in her own apartment. The only thing she did at her place was sleep. She literally did everything else at Lucian's, including all of her meals.Lucian turned around from the huge mirror so she could see him."Amira, what do you think?"She looked at him briefly first."Hmph, not bad. It's okay.""

Vincent's phone had been buzzing all through the drive to the office. He knew who was calling without having to look at it: his secretary, Betty. He would rather get there and see what was going on than answer the phone while driving. She was waiting for him again in the parking lot, a file in her hand. She rushed over to the driver's side before he could even get out."Geez, Betty. Can I get a breather? I am here now, aren't I?""Yes, sir, but M&C Conglomerate is here, and they've been waiting for over an hour."Vincent snapped."Shit, and you're just telling me? How can you be so careless?"He started rushing toward the elevator, with Betty close on his heels."I tried to reach you, sir. I sent you plenty of messages last night. I even called you, after you specifically told me never to do that when you are home."Vincent could not blame her much. She was only doing her job, and a transfer of aggression was not what he should be doing this morning. It was all Adriana's fault. If she

"Adriana, I'm heading for the office. Where are you?" Vincent shouted as he hooked his cufflinks. He heard her moving about in the bathroom, but she didn't come out."What are you doing? We are going to be late. Remember, there's a meeting with very important people."She opened the bathroom door, clad in a bathrobe, her head wrapped high in a towel.Vincent's face tightened when his eyes fell on her."Why aren't you ready? Didn't you hear anything I just said?""I heard you. There's no need to shout. It's not like you can't handle the meeting without me."Vincent stopped what he was doing. He dipped a finger in his ear to scratch it. He probably hadn't heard her correctly."Excuse me?""You heard me, Vincent. I don't have to be present for every meeting and all that office crap. Handle it. That's why you are the man.""We told them that they would be meeting with the two of us. I don't want to come off as a liar. Don't do this, Adriana.""Come up with an excuse or something. Say I wa

Lucian dropped the phone on Grey's table. Everything Maya had sent him was displayed on the screen, the chats they had been having since she contacted him.If he hadn't been given a restraining order, he would have barged into that building to save his daughter from those thieves."I can't believe they would actually do this to my little girl. And Adriana, what kind of mother is she?"Grey picked up the phone and read through the messages that Maya had sent to Lucian. She had told him everything, about how Adriana had started treating her badly since she overheard that they hadn't kicked her out because of the trust fund."I had a strong feeling back then. I just can't remember why I did that. We'd already set some money aside for Maya's trust. Then, before I lost my memory, I... I don't know. I felt the need to lock up more in Maya's name.""It's a good thing you did. From what I am reading here, Adriana has her plan mapped out thoroughly.""We have to stop them. Can't we get Maya ou

Since the first hearing, where Maya could not bring herself to testify, she had been kept under lock and key, under the scrutinizing eyes of Vincent and Adriana.Things changed drastically for poor Maya. She no longer had the freedom to visit her friends like she used to.And her friends weren't allowed to come to the house either. She was put under very strict regulation. No more shopping, no more hanging out on weekends. The only place she was allowed to go was school, and a driver was assigned to pick her up at a particular time."You think you're clever," Vincent sneered at her.It became worse. She wasn't allowed to roam around the house, for fear that she would run away.Neither Adriana nor Vincent was ready to deal with that kind of situation, not when they had a case to settle with Lucian. All meals were brought to Maya's room by a maid. The only time she was allowed to step out of her room was when she was going to school.Life became miserable for Maya, until she received th

"I know what I saw and felt, Amira. Something was up with Maya."They were in Lucian's penthouse, and he had been pacing the living room since they got in."Maybe she's just shaken. Having to sit there and talk can be a lot for a fourteen-year-old kid."Lucian was not about to agree. He knew his daughter so well. Maya was not the type to get frightened just because she had to talk in front of a few people. She was very outspoken, no matter the number of people before her. She had been like that ever since she could participate in school plays and sports. He just couldn't shake the feeling that something was off."So she didn't get to tell you what was wrong with her?""No, Vincent walked in just in time. And you should have seen her face. She was scared to the bone. My poor baby.""I don't know, Lucian. Maybe you are taking this too far. She probably wasn't happy that she had to testify, and that was why she broke down like that.""Amira, I know my daughter. Unless something is wrong,
