Chapter 12

Kale stared at him, the silence in the room was almost suffocating, the kind that comes after a renowned doctor loses to someone he claims to be a quack. Kale’s jaw clenched, his chest rising and falling normally but his eyes flickered to Eleanor who was still on the bed, then back at Lewis.

He finally cracked. “Fine.” The word was barely audible.

Lewis didn’t waste any more time and immediately turned to Eleanor, crouching beside the bed and pressing two fingers to the side of her wrist while she was still shaking violently. Her pulse was faint but present, he exhaled slowly and began moving his needles along her pressure points, stabilizing Kale's so-called treatment that had nearly ended her life.

Her pale lips steadily got their colour back, her breathing evened.

Lewis straightened up while watching her chest rise and fall carefully before he was satisfied.

Turning to Kale the door swung open.

Four people walked in. “How could you Irene!” The chubby man lashed out the moment he set his eyes on Irene. “You really are beginning to take things too far aren’t you?”

Behind the man was a woman who looked like she was in her forties. “She really wants it all for herself, trying to kill your grandmother? You’re despicable.”

“She’s alive and well,” Kale responded, pointing to Eleanor still sleeping on the bed, the sullen look in his eyes had faded. “She’s stable and fully recovered.” He grinned.

Rowland walked towards Lewis and gripped his shirt. “Then I see you’re the quack who wants to end my mother’s life, huh?”

“Uncle Rowland!” Irene stood between both men. “Could you act like you have some class?”

“Don’t act like you’re some saint, this quack nearly ended my mother’s life.”

“Of course.” Kale nodded in agreement. “This is what she had been doing, using Mrs Eleanor as a pawn to get the company, if I didn’t arrive on time, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.”

The young man who had followed behind his father, Peter, finally spoke. “To think she’s grandma’s favorite, very ironic.”

Rowland’s face twisted into a frown. “You.” He pointed to Irene. “You brought this man here into your grandmother’s room to end her life?”

“Uncle.” The younger lady who had followed behind them tried to speak.

“Don’t.” He turned to her angrily. “We all know what this is… the will, the companies, you’ve been waiting for this moment, haven’t you? Waiting to make sure she doesn’t survive long enough to change her mind.”

Emily frowned, Rowland's wife, and clicked her tongue. “Finally showing her true colors, I always said it, didn’t I always say it Rowland? The moment the old woman gets sick, we’d see her try colors.”

“She’s become rude and arrogant.” Peter rolled his eyes. “My father ought to be the one to inherit it all, not you! Business-wise, my father is more experienced than you.”

Irene frowned. “You all have so much to say, huh? You know the reason why you were never chosen to inherit anything?” She pointed at her uncle, Rowland. “Layouts a selfish bastard who doesn’t think things through.” She turned to Kale. “You should be ashamed of yourself… to think I even had some atom of respect for you is despicable.”

Kale blinked. “Excuse me?”

“You heard me.” She retorted, he had never seen her act this way before.

Rowland stepped forward. Lorene, this man saved your grandmother’s life.”

“He’s lying.” She glared. “He knows exactly what happened.”

“Enough!” Rowland turned to the two guards that had also come into the room and stood at the entrance watching them quietly, he gestured to Lewis. “Seize him!”

None of the guards moved.

Rowland lifted a brow. “Are you two deaf? I said

“I’m in charge here uncle.” Irene interrupted. “If anyone tries to touch him, they will regret it.”

The guards looked between her and Rowland, standing where they stood.

Lewis remained quiet, watching Jake quietly, when the room was finally quiet he turned to face him. “You’re going to kill someone.” His voice was even. “Though not today, but eventually, a patient is going to trust you with their life and you are going to kill them with the same ego you walked in here with today.” He tilted his head slightly. “That bothers me.”

Kale’s expression tightened. “You lost,” he smirked.

“Wrong again, I won,” Lewis replied. “Which is why you’re still standing, you remember what we agreed on? Now you’re going to be taught a lesson, perhaps it's time to settle that.” Kale glared defiantly, there was no way he would let someone speak to him in such a way. He clenched his hand around a syringe from the tray beside the bed and drove it to Lewis’s neck. Lewis had disappeared from where he stood in the blink of an eye.

He stepped to the side, letting Kale's hand overextend, and caught the wrist, followed by a controlled rotation applied at the exact right angle and the sound that came next was not one but several cracks.

Kale’s fingers… every one of them.

Kale dropped to his knees, the syringe clattering to the floor, a piercing groan left his lips. “Arrrhhhhhh.” Everyone froze.
