The moment Noah’s fingers closed around the jagged violet crystal, a shockwave of cold energy surged through his arm and tore straight into his chest.

Crack!

The air inside the warehouse warped. White frost spiderwebbed across the concrete floor as the ambient mana from the dormant node rushed into Noah’s body all at once. His veins flared with a brilliant blue glow, visible right through his dark jacket.

His heart slammed against his ribs like a sledgehammer. Pain, sharp, icy, and pure

flooded his dormant mana pathways, forcing them open by sheer physical pressure.

Noah gasped, his eyes snapping open. The world around him suddenly moved in slow motion. He could hear individual dust motes settling on the pallets, see the rotation of the exhaust fan fifty feet above, and track the micro-movements of his own muscles with terrifying precision.

His mana core was open. Twenty-nine days before the Gates were supposed to rupture, he had reclaimed his magic.

Static.

A sharp, grating voice burst through the tactical earpiece Noah had taken from the guard outside.

"Team Three, report," a cold, refined male voice commanded. "The energy reading on our scanner just dropped to zero. Did you secure the fragment?"

Noah stood still over the unconscious Syndicate manager. He picked up the dropped radio, pressed the receiver button, but remained silent.

"Team Three?" the voice demanded, its tone instantly darkening. "Who is on this frequency?"

"Your men failed," Noah said flatly. His voice was calm, low, and entirely devoid of fear. "Tell your director to stop looking for nodes in this city."

A heavy silence lingered over the radio line for three agonizing seconds. When the voice spoke again, all pretense of professional calm was gone—replaced by a chilling, quiet arrogance.

"Intriguing," the Syndicate handler replied softly. "You know what a node is. You know who we are. And yet you think taking a low-grade crystal makes you safe? Look at your feet, boy."

Noah’s eyes narrowed. He looked down instantly.

Affixed to the lapel of the suit-wearing manager was a tiny, flashing red light—a localized transponder that was rapidly pulsing a signal.

A secondary strike team, Noah realized.

BOOM!

The heavy corrugated metal doors at the far end of the warehouse exploded inward with a deafening roar. Shreds of metal and concrete dust tore through the air as a massive black tactical van breached the building, skidding sideways across the slick floor.

Before the dust could even settle, four heavily armed men leaped out of the side doors. Unlike the guards outside, these men wore high-grade carbon-fiber body armor, night-vision visors, and carried combat shotguns loaded with heavy breaching slugs.

Leading them was a hulking, six-foot-four man with a scarred bald head and a heavy steel combat axe strapped across his back.

A high-grade Syndicate executor.

"There's the bug!" the scar-faced leader roared, pointing a finger at Noah. "Kill him! Retrieve the core!"

The four mercenaries raised their weapons simultaneously.

PUM-PUM-PUM!

Heavy 12-gauge buckshot shredded the air where Noah had been standing a millisecond prior.

Noah was already gone.

With his Agility boosted to 22% and the passive Windrunner skill active, his body moved like a blurred shadow across the concrete. He didn't just dodge, he used future combat instinct to calculate the shotgun spread angles before the triggers were pulled.

He reappeared directly in front of the mercenary on the far left.

"What the..." the mercenary gasped, his eyes widening behind his visor.

Noah stepped inside the man's guard, grabbed the barrel of the combat shotgun with his gloved left hand, and drove his right elbow straight into the man's throat.

CRACK.

The mercenary choked, dropping his weapon. Noah grabbed the falling shotgun, pivoted on his heel, and fired two heavy slugs point-blank into the chest armor of the second mercenary advancing behind him.

BOOM! BOOM!

The reinforced Kevlar plates shattered under the kinetic impact, throwing the second man backward onto the hood of the black van with a bloody gasp.

"Fire! Focus fire on him!" the scar-faced leader screamed, unclipping the massive steel axe from his back.

The third mercenary panicked, spraying a wild burst of automatic shotgun fire across the central floor. Noah flipped backward over a stack of wooden crates, letting the buckshot reduce the wood to splinters. As he landed silently on his feet behind cover, he ejected the shotgun shell and reached for his E-Rank Tactical Trench Dagger.

He channeled a sliver of his newly awakened mana into the blade.

The matte-black steel ignited with a thin, humming edge of faint green wind energy—a basic mana-infusion technique that normally took Hunters months of training to master.

Noah stepped out from behind the splintered cover.

The third mercenary turned his barrel toward him, but Noah didn't give him the chance. He flicked his wrist, throwing the mana-infused trench dagger with terrifying velocity.

THWACK!

The blade pierced straight through the mercenary's tactical visor, embedding deep into his skull. The man collapsed instantly, dead before he hit the ground.

Now, only the scar-faced leader remained.

The hulking man looked at his three fallen squadmates, then slowly turned his gaze back to Noah. Sweat trickled down his scarred face, but he gritted his teeth and raised his heavy steel axe with both hands.

"You're an Awakened," the leader spat, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and disbelief. "The Gates haven't even opened... How do you have mana?"

Noah walked slowly toward the leader, pulling a second standard combat knife from the fallen guard's belt. His eyes were cold, hollow, and utterly relentless.

"You don't need to know," Noah said softly.

"Die, you freak!" the leader roared, leaping forward and bringing the steel axe down in a devastating overhead chop meant to split Noah in two.

It was a powerful swing, carried by immense physical force—enough to crush a normal car.

In his previous life, Noah had fought S-Rank mountain trolls and obsidian sovereigns. A human mercenary swinging an un-enhanced steel axe looked laughably slow.

Noah didn't even bother to dodge far. He simply stepped three inches to the left.

CRASH!

The heavy axe blade slammed into the concrete, throwing up a shower of sparks and lodging deep into the floor.

Before the leader could yank the weapon free, Noah stepped into his personal space. He drove a heavy, mana-reinforced front kick directly into the leader's kneecap, shattering the joint sideways.

"GAAAAAH!" the leader shrieked, dropping to one knee.

Noah grabbed the man's tactical collar, dragged his head down, and slammed his knee hard into the leader's nose. Bone cracked, and blood sprayed across the leader's face.

Before the man could collapse completely, Noah gripped his throat, pressing him firmly back against the side of the black van.

"Who is your handler?" Noah asked, his voice deathly quiet. "Which branch of the Syndicate operates in this district?"

The leader coughed up a mouthful of blood, letting out a ragged, trembling laugh. "Go to hell... You think you're strong? You're just one kid... The Director knows about the Gates... He knows everything... You can't stop what's coming..."

"Wrong answer," Noah said.

He drove a sharp blow into the man's carotid artery, knocking him completely unconscious.

Noah stepped back, taking a slow, deep breath to let his racing pulse settle. The entire fight had lasted less than ninety seconds. Four heavily armed, high-tier Syndicate operatives lay motionlessly around the ruined warehouse floor.

He looked down at his gloved hands. They were steady. His mana core hummed peacefully in his chest, replenishing his spent energy.

Ding.

The blue System interface materialized before his eyes, glowing with a sharp, urgency-filled light.

Noah picked up his thrown trench dagger, wiped the dark blood from the blade against the dead mercenary's vest, and returned it to his belt sheath. He walked over to the black van and searched the driver's seat, retrieving a encrypted tactical tablet and a map of the city marked with red ink.

On the tablet screen, a giant countdown timer was ticking away in bold red numbers:

29 Days, 22 Hours, 14 Minutes Until Gate Protocol Activation.

Noah closed his eyes for a brief second, feeling the heavy weight of the future pressing down on his shoulders.

He had taken his first step. He had awakened his mana, secured an E-Rank relic, and wiped out a Syndicate strike team. But as he looked at the city map sitting on the dashboard, he knew this was just a drop in the ocean.

He walked out of the ruined warehouse into the bright afternoon sun, adjusting his backpack straps.

The world was still going about its day—students going to class, commuters riding trains, families eating lunch—completely ignorant of the nightmare drawing closer by the second.

Noah tapped his System interface to bring up the countdown timer.

The air grew thicker with every step Noah, Lukas, and Sarah took, turning ice-cold and metallic.A heavy, purple haze hung in the dark air, glowing with a faint, unnatural light."My barrier is reacting to the atmosphere," Lukas whispered, glancing down at his arms. The skin on his forearms prickled as faint blue geometric lines flickered across his sleeves without his command. The raw spatial mana leaking through the concrete walls was so dense that his Absolute Barrier was absorbing it like a sponge."That's spatial pressure," Noah said, keeping his eyes locked on the tracks ahead. His trench dagger hummed softly in his right hand, the matte-black metal coated in a sharp layer of dark green wind. The dungeon metal felt strangely light against his spine, humming in harmony with the spatial mana pulsing beneath his skin. Beside him, Sarah stood holding her dark obsidian staff. The entire dock was illuminated by massive floodlights mounted on tall poles, casting stark yellow glare over rows of stacked metal containers.Six heavily armed guards wearing black raincoats over tactical body armor walked steady patrol routes around a specific blue container near the center of the yard. On their shoulders, embroidered clearly in silver thread, was the logo of the Serpent Syndicate: a coiled snake wrapped around a cracked globe."That blue container," Noah whispered, h

She looked down at her hands, completely mesmerized. Gentle, bright golden sparks danced effortlessly across her knuckles, casting a warm glow over her face. There was no agony, no tearing sensation, and no burning of her skin—only a deep, comforting heat pulsing steadily in her chest like a second heart."This... this doesn't make any sense," Sarah whispered, her voice trembling with a mix of shock and wonder. She looked from her glowing hands up to Noah, her amber eyes wide. "That rock was exploding. I felt my lungs burning... I thought I was going to die.
