Upon his arrival at The Thirsty Bird, his manager, Sophie, who was preparing to close, caught sight of him and exclaimed, "James!" She instructed him to come to her office immediately.
Seated in her office, James was handed a letter of termination and a few dollars. He was bewildered, wondering what he had done to deserve this. Despite his confusion, he wanted to hear the reason from his manager.
"What's my offense? I didn't do anything to deserve this," James pleaded, massaging his sore arm.
"You deserve everything you're accused of. You had the audacity to fight a customer at the Galaxy. You should be thankful you're not in jail, you idiot," Sophie snapped with anger in her voice.
James knew he had violated the company's rules by fighting with a customer. He understood the consequences, but he was concerned about not receiving his full salary, particularly his overtime pay.
"This isn't my full salary; my overtime isn't included. You have to pay me in full," James protested, further angering Sophie.
"That's the amount a moron like you will be paid when you can't follow simple rules and regulations. Now get out of my office," Sophie said, pointing to the door.
"You can't even keep your word," James muttered as he left the office.
"A dimwit like you doesn't deserve a place at The Thirsty Bird. I should have known better earlier," Sophie insulted him as he made his way out.
Today had not gone as James expected. He had saved up to buy his wife a Christmas gift, but instead, he found her cheating, leading to a brawl, and subsequently, his termination.
James was lost in thought as the taxi carried him through Drawsbury's busy streets. Upon arriving back at his apartment, he noticed the same car parked in the Galaxy's parking area. He assumed it belonged to Alex but couldn't wait to enter and find out for himself.
With curiosity, James pushed the door open. Unbeknownst to him, as Alex approached the door, he spotted James and stealthily used the back door to exit the house. James found Wendy seated in the living room, sipping melon juice and munching on crackers.
"What happened at the hotel?" James questioned Wendy immediately upon entering.
"What about it? Who do you think you are? Look in the mirror and see how miserable you are," Wendy hissed, expressing her disgust with James. His mouth hung open in disbelief at her response.
"As a matter of fact, I'm tired of your nonsense. I'm divorcing you, James," Wendy stated, pausing briefly to pick up the divorce papers.
"Divorce? Wendy, you don't have to let him come between us. We're happily married, aren't we?" James tried to calm Wendy's nerves.
"Didn't you marry me because you wanted to inherit my property? That's never happening. It's over, sign the papers," Wendy said, passing the documents to James.
"Inherit your property? Wendy, I'm in love with you, for crying out loud," James protested, his jaw dropping in disbelief.
"In love? You're just a poor and miserable person lusting after what you can't afford. I can't do this anymore. I've found someone whom I love and want to spend the rest of my life with. Now sign those papers and leave my house," Wendy said without remorse, avoiding eye contact with James.
"Wendy, don't do this to me. I forgive you; let's just continue as if today never happened at all," James pleaded. He knew he was doomed if Wendy threw him out. He had nowhere to go and would be back on the streets.
"Hahahhaha," Wendy laughed bitterly, her gaze cold as she stared at James.
"You've always been a hindrance to my progress. You can't even satisfy me in the slightest. Alex satisfies me far better than you ever could. He's also rich and royal. What more could one ask for?" Wendy dismissed James, pointing to the papers.
"Ding," Wendy's phone rang.
"Hello, darling. Your baby already misses you. Make sure you get back as soon as you can. I can't wait to have you for Christmas," Wendy said, giving James a disdainful look. The phone's speaker was loud enough for James to eavesdrop on their conversation.
"Has that smug face signed the papers yet? I'll offer him a hundred thousand dollars to sign the document," Alex said over the phone.
"He won't need such motivation; I have this under control," Wendy assured him.
Devastated, James confronted Wendy immediately after she ended the call.
"Is it because of him?"
"Yes, he's far better than you could ever be!" Wendy said coldly. James picked up the divorce papers and signed them. He then gathered his belongings, which didn't require an extra bag.
Standing at the front of the apartment, James looked back with tears in his eyes. He regretted being poor, as it seemed to be the cause of everything that had gone wrong today.
"I'll come back stronger, Wendy," James said to himself as he wiped his tears away, having no idea where to go. He was facing a homeless Christmas, wandering the streets without a clear destination.
Sitting on a bench, James sobbed while gazing at the sky. Why did it always happen to him? Since losing his parents, he had been lonely until he met Wendy. Now she had left him because he was poor. Why did it always seem like the good ones left? His life had just gone from bad to worse. James continued to cry until he finally passed out on the cold bench.
"Wake up young master, we finally found you." The voice sounded.
"Go away!" James shouted covering his head with his cardigan.
"Young Master James, please wake up." The stranger repeated to wake James. James felt disturbed and open his head and saw a stranger squatting in his front.
"I ask you to leave right away." James said authoritatively uninterested in what the stranger has to say.
"I will leave but after you speak to him young master." The stranger said while handing James the phone.
"I don't want to speak to anyone. I Just want you to be left alone please." James pleaded.
"You won't regret it young master." The stranger repeated. While James was collecting the phone he wondered why he was calling him young master probably he is mistaken for someone else.
"Thank God we finally found you James. I'm your grandfather, Robert Anderson. When you arrive home, I will explain everything to you." The man said on the phone.
"I have no home." James said immediately.
"Yes you have a home. Just let my men bring you here and everything is going to be clear." The voice pleaded. James agreed even though he had no where to sleep.
"Mission accomplished, we are coming home master." Immediately the stranger whistle, bunch of expensive car approach them. James was still in trance when the voice finally jolted him back to reality.
"Master James it time to go home sir. Please follow me." The stranger walked James to the vehicles.
When James saw the convoy, he was amazed. At first, he thought he was being kidnapped but someone who has this convoy has nothing to do with a poor peasant like him. Among the convoy, James could recognize a Rolls-Royce. He doesn't know the model but he had never seen it before. Before entering the car he could also recognize the Bugatti ahead. James can't imagine how rich the person who owns the cars is.
It was a long drive to the country side, James was too tired and fell asleep in the car.
"We have arrived master James." James opened his eyes and was suprised to see the big mansion. Just by the gate, James eyes caught a writing by the wall.
"Robert's villa." James said to himself. The villa looks beautiful in it white colors with shinning light making it hard to differentiate between day and night. The lawn was well kept with a parrot which whistled welcome as they entered. James looked ahead and saw another gate making him wonder where it leads to.
