WHAT REMAINS
Kael was still staring at Alric after the transmission ended. The final words from the missing inspection team kept echoing in his mind.“The person guarding the door,” he murmured. “Who did they mean?”Alric slipped the radio back onto his belt. “We’re returning to the communications room. The wounded soldiers need medical attention.”“Sorry, Sir. But that’s not an answer,” Kael replied.“And you’re in no condition to interrogate me.” Alric gestured to two soldiers to escort them. “We’ll discuss this once everyone is safe.”Darius gently tapped Kael’s arm. “For now, just do as he says. We won’t get any answers if you pass out in the corridor.”Kael finally followed them, although his thoughts remained behind the iron door.***The communications room was filled with the voices of operators reporting the situation. The attack on the eastern perimeter had stopped. The exterior cameras were back online, showing empty trees and several bullet marks on the fence. Splashes of blood could a
BENEATH THE OUTPOST
“Get the entire security squad to the main building!” Alric shouted at the operator. “Seal all access points to the underground level. Now!”The operator immediately followed his orders, but the screen in front of him flickered several times before displaying a red warning.“Commander, the security systems in the lower sector are unresponsive!”Alric approached the screen. “What do you mean, unresponsive?”“All sensors beneath the building went offline simultaneously. I also can’t access the floor plans for that level.”Kael stared at the image of the open iron door on the monitor. “You said there was no door down there.”“There isn’t one on the official blueprints,” Alric replied.“So there’s something beneath this outpost that you’ve never told us about?”Alric turned sharply toward him. “This is not the time to argue.”“Then when is it? After something comes out of there and kills everyone?!” Kael’s anger began to boil over.Darius stood beside him, his face still pale from his inj
OPEN THE DOOR
“Kael... open the door.”Kael remained motionless. The creature behind the cracked glass stared at him with unblinking yellow eyes, its claws slowly pressing against the window frame. Something was wrong with the way the Wraith stood. It did not look like a creature preparing to pounce on its prey, but rather someone waiting for an answer.“What door?” Kael asked. The Wraith tilted its head.“The door you opened.”Suddenly, a sharp pain pierced Kael’s head. Heavy rain. White light. An iron door with a cold handle. He saw his own small hand reaching for the handle, while someone screamed from behind the glass.“Kael, don’t!”Kael staggered and gripped the table beside him.“Kael!” Darius caught his shoulder. “Hey, look at me. What did you see?”“I...” Kael swallowed hard. “I don’t know.”“Don’t listen to its voice,” Darius said. “Whatever it says, don’t let it control you!”“I don’t even know how to do that!” Kael snapped. Before Darius could answer, suddenly...CRASH!!The glass shook
WHAT RETURNS
Kael was still staring at the photograph in Alric’s hand when the operator’s voice broke the silence in the communications room.“Commander, I’m receiving another signal from the inspection team.”Alric immediately turned around. “Connect it now!”The operator adjusted the frequency, and static filled the room. There were no clear words, only heavy breathing and a sound like metal being dragged across the floor. Kael felt his wrist throbbing and growing hot. Faint red lines appeared beneath his skin, exactly where the light had pulsed after the battle in Greyhaven.“Repeat the call!” Alric ordered.“Inspection team, this is command. Report your status.”Several seconds passed before a man’s voice came through.“...don’t... go down...”The operator leaned closer to the receiver. “Repeat that. Who is speaking?”“Don’t let... him... Arghhh!”The voice was cut off by a sharp scream. Then came three heavy knocks, one after another.Kael froze. It wasn’t because he recognized the voice, but
DON'T COME ALONE
“Trace the source of that transmission!” Alric ordered the operator. The soldier at the console immediately began typing a series of commands. The screen displayed irregular signal waves, followed by a map marked with several red dots.“The transmission originated near the burned building, Commander. However, the signal was too brief to determine its exact location.”“Try again!” Alric shouted.“I already did, Commander. The source has disappeared.”“Damn!” Alric cursed. The middle-aged man quickly grabbed the radio and tried to contact the inspection team once more, but only static answered.Kael remained where he was, staring at the radio with a tense expression. The man on the other end had sounded so calm, as if he wasn't worried at all about the four soldiers who might be in danger. What troubled Kael most was the man's final statement. If you want to know what happened that night, come alone.“Commander,” Kael called. “That man knows who I am. He also knows about the night I can
THE NIGHT THAT MUST NOT BE REMEMBERED
Kael read the sentence in the report over and over again.KAEL ARVEN MUST NOT REMEMBER WHAT HAPPENED THAT NIGHT.“Who wrote this?” he asked.Alric took the report from the desk. “The inspection team hasn't found the person who left it.”“If someone lives there and knows my name, why didn't they come to see me directly?”“Perhaps they don't want you to remember something.”“Everyone keeps saying that as if my memory were a weapon that could explode at any moment.” Kael stared at him sharply. “I have the right to know what happened to me.”“And it's my responsibility to make sure you don't endanger yourself or anyone else before we know what's really going on,” Alric replied.Kael let out a short, humorless laugh. “So I'm supposed to sit quietly while everyone else decides what I'm allowed to know?”Alric didn't respond. His silence only made Kael more certain that something was being kept from him.Suddenly, a ringing sensation filled Kael's ears.“Urgh...” Kael grimaced, pressing both
