Sleep refused to come.

I had been lying in bed for what felt like hours, staring at the ceiling; the same thoughts kept circling through my head.

The dead girl.

My name written in blood.

Symon's mana found on her body.

None of it made sense.

And somehow, every answer seemed to point back at me.

I rolled onto my side and closed my eyes.

Nothing.

I opened them again.

The room was dark except for the faint orange glow from the fireplace. The academy had gone quiet hours ago. I wasn't supposed to be awake, let alone outside. Zudrik had placed me under curfew after the council hearing, and after what happened earlier, I had no intention of giving anyone another reason to suspect me.

Still, something bothered me more than the accusations.

Symon was gone.

I hadn't heard his voice since earlier.

Not a single word.

I looked toward the space beside my bed.

“Grey.”

The familiar screen appeared.

"Yes, Lord Symon."

“Why haven't I heard him?”

“Who?”

“Symon.”

A pause.

“I cannot determine why.”

“You're supposed to be a mana guide. Can't you tell if he's still there?”

“His soul remains integrated with yours.”

“So he's still there?”

“Yes.”

“Then why can't I hear him?”

“I don't know.”

I frowned.

That answer was becoming Grey's favorite.

“Can he hear me?”

Another pause.

“I cannot confirm that.”

I fell back against the pillow.

“Great.”

The room went silent again.

I tried closing my eyes.

A few seconds passed.

Then—

A scream tore through the night.

I sat upright.

My heart slammed against my ribs.

Another scream followed.

A woman's voice.

I was already out of bed before I could think about it.

I grabbed my sword from beside the chair and threw my coat over my shoulders.

Grey appeared again.

“Lord Symon, I strongly advise against leaving your chambers.”

“It's past midnight.”

“Yes.”

“I'm under curfew.”

“Yes.”

“And someone just screamed.”

“Yes.”

I opened the door.

“Then I'm going.”

The corridor was empty.

I moved quietly through the academy, keeping to the shadows. Every instinct told me to turn around, but the scream had come from somewhere outside.

I reached the rear entrance and slipped through it.

Cold air struck my face.

The academy grounds stretched beneath the moonlight. Beyond the outer wall was a narrow stretch of trees and rocky ground.

And beyond that—

The cemetery.

I had seen it from the academy windows before, but never this close.

I moved toward it, sword still in hand.

The scream had stopped.

That worried me more than another one would have.

I passed between two rows of old gravestones.

Then I saw her.

I froze.

A girl hung from one of the large trees near the center of the cemetery.

Her body swayed gently in the wind.

My grip tightened around the sword.

Not again.

I took one step forward.

Then stopped.

Voices.

They were coming from behind me.

I ducked behind a stone monument and crouched low.

Footsteps hurried across the cemetery.

“Over here!”

It was Zudrik.

Several professors followed him, carrying lanterns. Their voices were low, tense, as they approached the tree.

I pressed myself against the stone.

If they found me here, I wouldn't have an explanation.

I wasn't supposed to be outside.

And another dead girl had appeared.

After the first body, my name had been written on the wall.

What would they find this time?

I didn't wait to find out.

Keeping low, I moved away from the cemetery, careful not to disturb the grass or loose stones beneath my feet.

A branch snapped somewhere behind me.

I froze.

Nobody called out.

I kept moving.

Once I reached the academy wall, I ran.

I didn't stop until I was back inside the castle.

The corridors were still empty.

I climbed the stairs two at a time, slipped into my room, closed the door and locked it behind me.

I stood there, breathing hard.

My sword was still in my hand.

I looked at the blade.

Then toward the window.

Two dead girls.

Both at the academy.

Both after someone had written my name beside the first body.

And now I'd been the one to discover the second.

I lowered the sword slowly.

“Grey.”

The screen appeared.

“What are the chances this is a coincidence?”

There was a long pause.

“Extremely low.”

I stared at the answer.

For once, Grey hadn't tried to soften it.

Someone was killing students.

And somehow, I kept ending up close to the bodies.

I sat on the edge of my bed.

Then another thought hit me.

I hadn't heard Symon.

Not when I saw the body.

Not when I heard the scream.

Not even when I was running back here.

Nothing.

I looked toward the dark room.

“Symon?”

Silence.

I swallowed.

For the first time, I wasn't worried about what Symon might do.

I was worried about why he wasn't answering.

I waited for Vax to fall asleep before retiring to my room. Seeing her cry weighed on my chest in ways I didn't expect. During the exchange with Lucifero, she must have worried about my safety. I had been reckless. The hall was too quiet. Perhaps everyone dreaded running into Symon Wardreth now. I knew I would take the entire blame, and no one would point a finger at Lucifero; the realization made my blood boil.I landed in bed like a husk. Sleep didn't come for hours; I kept tossing and turning from side to side until I finally sat up."I know exactly what it means. It means you were handed everything the rest of us had to earn. Magic. Title. Her."Lucifero's words rippled through my mind. I could see his face, the way it looked at me like I was some pile of filth not fit to be in these halls."She's a Wardreth. Everything that name touches deserves to burn."I shut my ears with my palms, as though doing so would keep his words from my head.Lucifero didn't just hate Symon, didn't ju

  • Chapter 18: Two Blades

Time rewound to the moment I heard Lucifero's voice. I shoved Vax out of the way and drew my sword. His attack still caught me. The ice was stinging, and it cut my knuckles."You—" I didn't get the rest of the sentence out before he moved again, blade trailing frost, the temperature in the hall dropping fast enough to fog every breath around us.I brought my sword up to meet the next swing, and the impact sent a shudder up both arms. He wasn't holding back.Whatever restraint he usually kept wrapped around himself had come completely undone."You could have killed her," I snarled."I don't care." He said it so flatly, so simply, that it landed harder than if he'd screamed it. "I never have."That answer told me everything I needed to know and none of what I wanted. He came at me again, faster this time, ice forming in jagged spears along the floor with every step he took, and I felt the heat build in my chest — the tell I'd learned to recognize by now, the one that meant I was about t

  • Chapter 17: Give Me Something

"Get away from her!" I screamed even before I was fully in the hall. Everyone present turned to the door.Mazikeen sat beside Vax, holding one strand of her braided hair like she was checking it out. Vax laughed at something she'd said. I crossed the room in a long stride and yanked Vax up by her hand."Ouch!" Vax winced. When she saw the frown on my face, she didn't protest further."You will do well to stay away from her." I was surprised at how low and deep my voice sounded."You're paranoid; I don't recall you being this paranoid." Mazikeen smiled. She had the effortless ability to smile like a devil."We were just talking," Vax whispered."Your sister is a natural at magic; she'll surpass even you when she gets to our level.""And don't think I know that?" I snapped. She sighed and crossed one leg over the other; her cut dress slid off, revealing her thighs. I looked away."What do I have to do to earn a little breathing space with you?""How about crawling back to your hellhole

  • Chapter 16: Out of My Way

“Do I need to tell you two to behave?” Zudrik looked at Lucifero first, then his eyes darted to me. Neither of us answered. He sighed.“Your father decided to foster peace between our realms. I share your disapproval of it, but we cannot risk a war,” he said.“He should have picked another academy aside from this one.”I looked at Lucifero; his hand was on the hilt of his sword; his hand was always on the hilt of his sword. He looked taller now.“And you?”“I promise to stir no trouble,” I told him. He didn't look like he believed me.“Symon, you've said those words to me so many times in the past, and each time you manage to do the exact opposite.”“I have a sister to look after,” I said.“Stay away from Mazikeen. I have a hard time trusting that demon.” Zudrik turned to Lucifero. “I need you to lead any mission those two are involved in.”Lucifero nodded slowly, like he had no choice but to accept. We left Zudrik's office in silence, which was somehow worse than if he'd kept yelling

  • Chapter 15: Guests of the Crown

Odbeara had a way of throwing the worst news at me at the first light of each day. I found out the same way I found out about most disasters lately — by walking into a room and immediately regretting it.The main hall was packed. Every guild master was there, and students had crammed themselves along the balconies above like something worth watching was about to happen.Vance stood near the front, arms crossed, jaw tight."What's going on?" I asked, sliding in beside Astrid."You're about to find out," she said. "And you're not going to like it."Zudrik walked up to the dais, and the room went quiet. He cleared his throat."By order of the crown," he said, "and in accordance with terms negotiated following the incident with the Emperor's sons — two new members will be joining the Blazing Sun Guild. Effective immediately."A ripple went through the crowd. My stomach dropped before my brain caught up with why.The doors at the back of the hall opened.I felt them before I saw them. Tha

  • Chapter 14: The Space Between

I waited until I was alone before I let myself fall apart, just a little.Astrid had bought the "I'm fine" for about as long as it took her to finish her sentence about moonroot elixirs, which was to say, not at all. She'd walked me to my room anyway, made me drink water like that fixed anything, and left only after I promised — badly, unconvincingly — that I'd sleep it off.I had no intention of sleeping."Grey."The screen flickered to life at the foot of my bed, patient as ever, infuriating as ever."Yes, Lord Symon.""I need you to explain something, and I need you to actually explain it this time. Not the version where you say three words and let me sit in existential crisis for a week.""I make no promises.""Grey.""Very well. What would you like explained?"I sat forward, elbows on my knees. "I was standing in the guild hall. One second I'm listening to Astrid talk about moonroot, the next I'm in a hospital bed on Earth holding my mother's hand. Then I'm back in the hall like
