A girl hung from the ceiling. Her lifeless body swayed gently in the draft, her feet dangling several feet above the floor. Blood covered the wall behind her. Written across it in large, uneven letters were three words:

SYMON WARDRETH

The moment I stepped into the hall, every eye turned toward me. I swallowed.

“What have you done?”

Lucifero stepped out from the crowd of students.

“I didn't do anything,” I replied quickly.

“Everyone, back to your classes.”

The High Archmage's voice cut through the murmuring crowd. He was drawn to the commotion.

“Not you, Mr. Wardreth. And Miss Amelia.”

My eyes met Amelia's across the hall. She looked away.

Once the students had cleared out, the High Archmage led us to his office. Several academy staff members were already waiting inside.

The moment I entered, I knew what they were thinking. They didn't have to say it. They had already decided I was involved.

“You better not be involved in this,” the first woman growled.

Penel. I recognized her from Symon's memories. She was the guild master of the Siren Song Guild.

“We are not pointing fingers,” Zudrik said. “Mr. Wardreth is here to confirm something for us.”

He took his seat and motioned for me to step forward.

“It has been brought to my attention that you skipped one of your classes today. Care to tell us where you were?”

I swallowed. I knew I was innocent, yet my heart hammered against my ribs.

“I had to clean myself after the mess I caused during Sir Gregor's class.”

“And who can vouch for you?”

“I don't know.”

I hadn't told anyone I was leaving. Not even Sir Gregor.

“I saw him leave for the bathroom to clean himself,” Amelia said quietly, her head lowered.

Zudrik's eyes narrowed.

“It's wise to defend your friend. It is unwise to lie.”

“I'm not lying.” Amelia lifted her head.

She stood straight now, looking directly at Zudrik.

He studied her for several seconds. “You may return to class.”

I nodded and left the room.

Amelia caught up with me in the corridor.

“Are you okay?”

I stopped. The question caught me off guard. When was the last time someone had asked me that?

“Can I trust you with something?”

[Don't you dare tell her.]

I ignored the voice.

“What is it?” she asked.

“How much do you know about the Twin-Souled?”

“Not much. Why?”

“Because your Symon has his soul merged with mine.”

The words sounded insane even as I said them.

Amelia recoiled slightly. “Are you sure?”

“You don't think I've been acting strange lately?”

She shook her head. “I assumed you were avoiding me.” She hesitated, then added, “Does that mean you're not Symon?”

“I am.” I paused.

“We are the same person. That's what I've gathered so far.”

She stared at me. The confusion on her face slowly gave way to something else. Recognition.

“You really don't remember?”

“Not everything.”

“What do you remember?”

“My life.”

I looked at my hands.

“My parents. My school. My friends. Everything from before I came here.”

“And nothing about this place?”

“I remember pieces. Memories that don't feel like mine, even though I know they're real.”

Amelia was quiet.

“Then the person standing in front of me isn't the Symon I knew.”

“Apparently not.”

She looked toward the office behind us.

“That's why you defended me.”

“What?”

“In there. You didn't know what I'd done. You didn't know what kind of person I was.”

“I know enough.”

“No, you don't.”

Her voice softened. “Symon wouldn't have said that.”

I didn't know whether to take that as an insult or a compliment.

“So what was he like?”

She looked at me for a long moment. “Difficult.”

I almost laughed.

“Grey said something similar.”

“Grey?”

“My mana guide.”

She frowned. “Right. The thing inside your core.”

“Something like that.”

She looked back toward the office. “You should be careful.”

“About what?”

“Whoever killed that girl knew your name.”

I glanced toward the corridor.

“And wrote it in blood.”

“Yes.”

“Which makes me look guilty.”

“It makes you look like the target.”

That stopped me.

“The target?”

Amelia nodded. “If they wanted to frame you, they could have simply killed her and left. Writing your name there was deliberate.”

“So someone wants me blamed.”

“Or someone wants you afraid.”

I looked toward the empty hallway. Neither possibility was comforting. A distant bell rang, signaling the end of the period.

Amelia stepped back.

“I should go.”

“Wait.”

She turned.

“The girl who died. Did Symon know her?”

“Yes.”

“How well?”

“She was a student here. That's all I know.”

“Was she his friend?”

“No.”

“Enemy?”

“Not that I know of.”

I frowned.

“Then why her?”

Amelia didn't answer. She looked troubled.

“What?”

“There was something strange about her.”

“What?”

“She was missing something.”

“What was she missing?”

“Her mana.”

I stared at her.

“What do you mean?”

“The High Archmage examined her before we left. Almost all of her mana was gone.”

My stomach tightened.

“Someone drained it?”

“We don't know.”

I looked down the corridor again.

“Grey.”

Nothing.

“Grey?”

The familiar screen appeared before my eyes.

[Mana Flow State: Irregularity detected.]

My stomach dropped.

“What irregularity?”

The screen changed.

[Residual mana signature detected.]

I stared at the words.

“Whose?”

The answer appeared.

[Symon Wardreth.]

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

“Simon?”

Amelia's voice pulled me back.

I blinked.

“What?”

“You went pale.”

I looked at the screen again.

Symon's mana had been inside the dead girl's body.

My throat tightened.

“Nothing.”

Amelia clearly didn't believe me.

“What did you see?”

I hesitated. Then the screen disappeared.

“I'm not sure.” That was a lie.

For the first time since arriving in Odbeara, I had a reason to believe that my situation wasn't an accident.

Someone had killed that girl. Someone had written my name beside her body. And now Grey had detected Symon's mana on her.

I looked toward the end of the corridor. Maybe they weren't trying to convince everyone that I was the killer. Maybe they were trying to tell me something.

And I had no idea what.

I waited for Vax to fall asleep before retiring to my room. Seeing her cry weighed on my chest in ways I didn't expect. During the exchange with Lucifero, she must have worried about my safety. I had been reckless. The hall was too quiet. Perhaps everyone dreaded running into Symon Wardreth now. I knew I would take the entire blame, and no one would point a finger at Lucifero; the realization made my blood boil.I landed in bed like a husk. Sleep didn't come for hours; I kept tossing and turning from side to side until I finally sat up."I know exactly what it means. It means you were handed everything the rest of us had to earn. Magic. Title. Her."Lucifero's words rippled through my mind. I could see his face, the way it looked at me like I was some pile of filth not fit to be in these halls."She's a Wardreth. Everything that name touches deserves to burn."I shut my ears with my palms, as though doing so would keep his words from my head.Lucifero didn't just hate Symon, didn't ju

Time rewound to the moment I heard Lucifero's voice. I shoved Vax out of the way and drew my sword. His attack still caught me. The ice was stinging, and it cut my knuckles."You—" I didn't get the rest of the sentence out before he moved again, blade trailing frost, the temperature in the hall dropping fast enough to fog every breath around us.I brought my sword up to meet the next swing, and the impact sent a shudder up both arms. He wasn't holding back.Whatever restraint he usually kept wrapped around himself had come completely undone."You could have killed her," I snarled."I don't care." He said it so flatly, so simply, that it landed harder than if he'd screamed it. "I never have."That answer told me everything I needed to know and none of what I wanted. He came at me again, faster this time, ice forming in jagged spears along the floor with every step he took, and I felt the heat build in my chest — the tell I'd learned to recognize by now, the one that meant I was about t

  • Chapter 17: Give Me Something

"Get away from her!" I screamed even before I was fully in the hall. Everyone present turned to the door.Mazikeen sat beside Vax, holding one strand of her braided hair like she was checking it out. Vax laughed at something she'd said. I crossed the room in a long stride and yanked Vax up by her hand."Ouch!" Vax winced. When she saw the frown on my face, she didn't protest further."You will do well to stay away from her." I was surprised at how low and deep my voice sounded."You're paranoid; I don't recall you being this paranoid." Mazikeen smiled. She had the effortless ability to smile like a devil."We were just talking," Vax whispered."Your sister is a natural at magic; she'll surpass even you when she gets to our level.""And don't think I know that?" I snapped. She sighed and crossed one leg over the other; her cut dress slid off, revealing her thighs. I looked away."What do I have to do to earn a little breathing space with you?""How about crawling back to your hellhole

  • Chapter 16: Out of My Way

“Do I need to tell you two to behave?” Zudrik looked at Lucifero first, then his eyes darted to me. Neither of us answered. He sighed.“Your father decided to foster peace between our realms. I share your disapproval of it, but we cannot risk a war,” he said.“He should have picked another academy aside from this one.”I looked at Lucifero; his hand was on the hilt of his sword; his hand was always on the hilt of his sword. He looked taller now.“And you?”“I promise to stir no trouble,” I told him. He didn't look like he believed me.“Symon, you've said those words to me so many times in the past, and each time you manage to do the exact opposite.”“I have a sister to look after,” I said.“Stay away from Mazikeen. I have a hard time trusting that demon.” Zudrik turned to Lucifero. “I need you to lead any mission those two are involved in.”Lucifero nodded slowly, like he had no choice but to accept. We left Zudrik's office in silence, which was somehow worse than if he'd kept yelling

  • Chapter 15: Guests of the Crown

Odbeara had a way of throwing the worst news at me at the first light of each day. I found out the same way I found out about most disasters lately — by walking into a room and immediately regretting it.The main hall was packed. Every guild master was there, and students had crammed themselves along the balconies above like something worth watching was about to happen.Vance stood near the front, arms crossed, jaw tight."What's going on?" I asked, sliding in beside Astrid."You're about to find out," she said. "And you're not going to like it."Zudrik walked up to the dais, and the room went quiet. He cleared his throat."By order of the crown," he said, "and in accordance with terms negotiated following the incident with the Emperor's sons — two new members will be joining the Blazing Sun Guild. Effective immediately."A ripple went through the crowd. My stomach dropped before my brain caught up with why.The doors at the back of the hall opened.I felt them before I saw them. Tha

  • Chapter 14: The Space Between

I waited until I was alone before I let myself fall apart, just a little.Astrid had bought the "I'm fine" for about as long as it took her to finish her sentence about moonroot elixirs, which was to say, not at all. She'd walked me to my room anyway, made me drink water like that fixed anything, and left only after I promised — badly, unconvincingly — that I'd sleep it off.I had no intention of sleeping."Grey."The screen flickered to life at the foot of my bed, patient as ever, infuriating as ever."Yes, Lord Symon.""I need you to explain something, and I need you to actually explain it this time. Not the version where you say three words and let me sit in existential crisis for a week.""I make no promises.""Grey.""Very well. What would you like explained?"I sat forward, elbows on my knees. "I was standing in the guild hall. One second I'm listening to Astrid talk about moonroot, the next I'm in a hospital bed on Earth holding my mother's hand. Then I'm back in the hall like
