The ground was tearing apart, resonating with the sound of millions of grinding bedrocks. Aren had less time to react as the floor of the cave completely disintegrated under him. The stone walls caved inward, and the ceiling collapsed. Gravity sucked him in. He was dragged into the darkness, swallowed by a humongous sinkhole that had opened in the earth. The air rushed past his ears with a deafening roar. All around him, massive chunks of the cavern some the size of carriages fell alongside him in the void. Aren was driven by the elevated receptors of his evolution so he didn't panic. His mind slowed the haggard descent into a series of calculated trajectories. He violently twisted his body mid-air, dodging a falling debris that would have crushed him. He reached out with his right hand, driving one of his daggers directly into the falling walls of the cavern t

  • Chapter 15: Warning!! Warning!! Warning!!

He sat on the ground, the massive carcass of the shadow wolf alpha resting mere feet away. The beast’s warm violet blood pooled in the craters left behind from their battle, filling the environment with a thick metallic scent. In Aren’s lap rested his prize. The magical aura emanating from the stone was so intensely concentrated that the air immediately surrounding it miraged. Aren stared at it, his eyes bouncing off the hypnotic light. A profound sense of victory still flowed in his blood , but his natural instincts quickly cut through the lingering euphoria. He can’t stay here, he realized as he forced his battered body to stand. While the terrifying battle had driven most of the wildlife into hiding, the scent of a dead alpha would eventually draw the starving, desperate things that lurked in the deepest shadows. Aren still had some strength, but his stamina was completely dra

  • Chapter 14: I Am a Monster Slayer!

The ambush came from above. Aren barely processed the terrifying revelations from the beast's memory. His mind was still recovering from the vision of the god-like entity ripping the sky apart. The shadow wolf, stripped completely of its arrogance and driven entirely mad by the terror from the deep woods, had circled back. It was now a cornered beast, lashing out violently at the only thing it could safely kill in the forest. Aren’s predator’s instinct rang like a shattered bell. Aren didn't look up. He didn't waste time trying to confirm the threat. Instead,he threw his entire body forward, triggering shadow burst (advanced) at the last minute but he wasn't fast enough to escape. The massive jaws snapped shut with a that sounded like a detonating powder keg, closing right on the space where Aren’s head had been. As Aren launched himself backwards, the alpha's claws swatted downward in a sweeping arc. The claws grazed Aren’s left shoulder as he dove. The force of the blow was ut

  • CHAPTER 13: Impossible Memories

The level of silence in the wood’s was more than simply a lack of noise. It pressed against Aren’s eardrums becoming more oppressive by the minute and his ears trembled from the pressure. Aren stood like a statue, his breath frozen as he focused on the destruction. He reached out slowly with his hand, which vibrated from leftover rush of adrenaline. He outlined the edge of a deep gouge in the hard trunk. The shadow wolf alpha, an apex predator, had been killing dozens elite vanguard hunters like pawns now it is hiding. As Aren dragged his fingers along the rugged bark, his senses picked up a strong smell filling up the atmosphere. On the wood, where the alpha had pushed past in panic, there was a pool of radiating violet blood. It was the blood of the alpha, left behind from the shoulder wound Aren had inflicted earlier on it. The System flickered in his peripheral vision. [Concentrated High-Tier Genetic Material Detected. Data Extraction Recommended.] Aren halted for a brief mom

  • Chapter 12: Hunted Hunter

Aren needed only a brief hesitation. In that moment, the balance of the wasteland as hunter became the hunted, predator became prey and the prey turned into something more dangerous. The alpha noticed Aren’s glowing violet eyes, it sensed the threatening power of the beast cores he had absorbed. Once again, the alpha of the shadow wolves, predator of the supernatural woods was frightened. The human in front of it was no longer weak; he was a new kind of creature. The alpha couldn’t comprehend or name what he faced. Black magic was building up in the alpha’s throat, but faded into harmless mist. The beast let out a low, defensive whine, tucked its tail, and ran into the darkness as quickly as its wounded leg allowed. Aren took a brief moment, letting the moment stretch. In the midst of the chaos, his breath was measured and deliberate. His predator’s instinct thrummed in his brain, anchoring him. He walked slowly toward where the beast had fled crouching low, allowing his fingers to

  • Chapter 11: Predator

The towering anomaly did not break its stride to investigate the hollowed-out tree. Aren paralyzed his own muscles, pressing his spine hard against the petrified wood, holding his breath as the terrifying, oppressive aura washed over the woods. The ground trembled with a deep, rhythmic vibration, a seismic heartbeat that resonated through the solid bedrock of the Wasteland. Whatever the entity was, its sheer atmospheric weight pinned Aren in place, completely silencing every insect and beast for miles in every direction. Slowly, agonizingly, the freezing pressure began to lift. The rhythmic vibrations faded, heading steadily westward, moving deeper into the forbidden, uncharted zones of the Wasteland. When the ambient temperature finally warmed enough for the frost on the dead leaves to melt, Aren allowed himself to exhale. His heart was hammering a frantic rhythm against his newly calcified ribs. The memory fragment he had inherited from the core was absolutely real, and whate
