CHAPTER THREE HUNDRED AND TWO
The news came out on Saturday morning at seven forty-three.Before anyone called him, Robert has seen it. He was at the kitchen island with his coffee, when the alert arrived in his phone. Not standard Zenco communications monitoring. The personal media-tracking service that had been in operation since the gala photo did a direct alert. He opened it.A gossip outlet. The type that ran at the intersection between believable and timely content - before anyone could react to the damaging stories. The top line was eight words.Questions surround paternity of Robert Jackson's newborn son.He read the piece.Built with the sophistication of a work which was composed prior to the availability of the evidence to support it. A list of questions and not statements. Docs that are claimed to be acquired by the outlet, but never seen. Sources close to both families, but unnamed. The medical record or documents citing such without actually reproducing them was described sufficiently to allow them t
CHAPTER THREE HUNDRED AND ONE
Robert came in at a quarter to eight.Dave had booked an extra room. Neutral location. A hotel neither of them used for their job. A location without a lobby, and a room that would not have to be passed through, and could be entered and exited without being seen in the main room.Robert was seated at a little table. He turned his eyes to the room. Four chairs. A window facing the courtyard of the hotel. Coffee that both of them brought and set on a side table. He gazed at the courtyard. He was thinking about what he was going to say and how he would say it and he decided that he wasn't going to plan it. The managed version was created by planning. The managed version was over.At exactly eight Maxime appeared at the door.He stopped when he saw Robert. His gaze was fixed straight ahead on him across the room.Robert looked back. Both of them stood for a while. The quiet quality of two individuals who come to a large room and silently explore what the room is filled with, before either
CHAPTER THREE HUNDRED
That evening, Dave called Robert at ten fifteen.Robert was in the living room. Roxanne was standing next to him. Clara was asleep. Pius was in his room. The penthouse was particularly still, as night was beginning to fall, when the phone rang.Robert gazed at the screen. Dave. He answered.“Can I come over tonight? Now." Dave said.Robert looked at Roxanne. She read his face."Come," Robert said.It took Dave fourteen minutes to arrive. With his phone in hand and the face he always wears when something is urgent and he's been driving all day to figure out how to present it, he walked through the door.He sat opposite to both of them.He didn't work toward it.“Maxime got a fake medical record tonight.” Dave said. “Anonymous message. Unknown number. His name on a document associating him with a private medical practice at the time when Pius was conceived.” He set his phone on the table between them. “The document is meant to create a certain narrative, somebody made it that way to mak
CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED AND NINETY-NINE
It was a Thursday evening when Maxime got the message. He was closing down the offices for the foundation. The building was vacant. Staff had gone. He felt the stillness of the office after he got to his desk and picked up his jacket from his chair, as he switched off the final light. His phone buzzed. An unknown number. A single message. No greeting. No identification. He opened it.A picture of a document. Fake medical record. His name on top. A private doctor that he never went to. A date. A mention of a procedure which he had never been a part of in any way.He read it twice, standing in the darkened office. He knew right away, what it was.Not evidence. A construction. He had been sent a medical document from someone, with his name on it. The communication was the sending. Not the content. He knew that this had been built, because it was sent and he received it. They had to make him aware of the collection of things that were happening around him and around the people who were as
CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED AND NINETY-EIGHT
Phillip was given the information on a Friday morning. His outside contact had located what Leonard wanted. History of the medical practice's registration. Specific details to either confirm or refute the implication of the payment records. The contact forwarded it as before. Daily legal business correspondence on the surface. Specific and meaningful underneath.Phillip sat at his desk and read it.He read it three times over.During the two payments the practice was registered under a different name. During that time the name it was known by was attached to a medical network specializing in a specific category of reproductive care. Not the type Carver had mentioned. A different one.Phillip checked the details of the registration. He pondered on what this meant.Follow-up care was recommended over four weeks, based on the payment records. During that time the practice's specialization indicated that the follow-up care was not for a completed pregnancy. The specialization was to a par

When he came through the door she looked up.She placed the phone down.He was sitting at the island. She went and sat across from him.She put the phone in between them. A forwarded image on her screen. Two pages of record bookings."Tell me what you are thinking," she said.He glanced at the screen.“I am going through a calculation that I don't want to go through” he said. “It's happening around me, I don't really understand it, it's something that's going on in me, I don't know what it is.”She looked at him.“Run it out loud. Right now. In this kitchen where I'm sitting across from you.” She said. “Because no matter what's going on in the dark in your head, it's more dangerous than what you're saying in my face.”He examined the records. He told her. The dates. Suggested duration from four weeks of follow-up medical care. What that period
