Frank sat alone behind his desk. The morning sun tried to enter through the tall glass window, but the heavy curtains made the room look dim and cold.
A soft breeze came from the air conditioner, yet Frank could feel sweat forming on his forehead.
His hand trembled as he held the folder on the desk. The folder felt heavier than any document he had ever touched.
The ticking of the wall clock echoed in the silent office. Tick. Tick. Tick. The sound drilled into his ears, steady and merciless.
Frank blinked at the first page, but the words kept blurring. He wiped his eyes and leaned closer. The same word stared back at him.
DIVORCE.
His lips parted, but his voice barely came out. “Divorce?” he whispered, as if speaking louder would make it more real.
His breath grew uneven. His fingers curled around the paper, wrinkling the edges.
Across from him stood Lily, his secretary. She had worked for him for years, always polite, always respectful, always calm.
But today, she was none of those things. Her arms were crossed over her chest. Her eyes were sharp like blades. Her lips held a cruel smile that made Frank’s stomach twist.
She looked at him as if he were something beneath her shoes.
Frank raised his eyes to her slowly. “Why… why would Alexa ask for a divorce?” His voice cracked like thin glass.
Lily shifted her weight, her heels clicking on the floor. “Why else?” she asked with a shrug. Her tone held no pity. Only scorn. “Mrs. Alexa is tired of carrying dead weight.”
The words hit Frank like a punch in the chest. He blinked hard. “Dead weight?”
“You heard me,” Lily said, her eyes rolling in a way that made his cheeks burn with shame. “Since you married her, what have you done? Nothing. You cook, you clean, and you stand there like decoration. Do you know the pressure she gets from her company’s board because of you? Do you know how people laugh at her behind her back?”
Frank opened his mouth. He wanted to tell her she was wrong. He wanted to defend himself, but no words came out. His throat tightened. His heart throbbed painfully.
Lily’s face twisted with impatience. “And the truth is simple. You are not suitable for her. She wants to rise. She wants success. And for that, she needs someone far better than you.”
Frank swallowed hard. A bitter, broken laugh escaped him. “So she sent you to tell me this? My wife cannot even look me in the eye?”
His mind flashed with memories. He saw himself cooking for Alexa when she came home exhausted.
He saw himself cleaning their home while she worked late nights. He remembered the day he bought her the very office she used now.
He had believed in her dream before anyone else did. And now she wanted to throw him aside like trash.
Lily tapped the divorce papers on the desk. Her expression grew colder. “Stop wasting time. Sign it. Right here.”
Frank looked down at the signature line. His hand lifted a little, reaching for the pen, but it froze in mid-air.
His chest tightened as Alexa’s promises echoed in his mind—promises of forever, of loyalty, of standing together no matter what storm came.
“No,” he said quietly. His voice did not shake this time. “I will not sign until I see her face to face.”
Lily slammed her palm on the table. The sound crashed through the room. “Why are you so stubborn? People like you never know their place. It is pathetic.”
Frank raised his head. His eyes carried a quiet fire. “Since when did you get the courage to speak to me like this?”
Lily leaned forward. “Since I stopped pretending.” Her voice dripped poison. “Do you want me to remind you who you are? To Mrs. Alexa, you are a nobody. A reckless, abandoned piece of trash.”
Frank’s fingers gripped the edge of the desk so hard his knuckles turned white. His jaw locked tight. He wanted to shout, but something inside held him still.
Lily smirked as she continued, “And soon, Mrs. Alexa will begin her relationship with Fredrick Maurice.”
Frank froze. He stared at her, stunned. “Fredrick… Maurice?”
Lily nodded proudly. “Yes. They are already in love. You are the only obstacle left.”
The room felt as if it had shrunk around him. Fredrick Maurice. Everyone knew the name. The heir of the Maurice Empire.
A man whose influence reached every part of the city. A man people bowed to. A man who could destroy rivals without lifting a finger.
If Alexa had chosen him… then Frank truly meant nothing.
Before Frank could speak, the door opened. The sound of heels entered the room, steady, graceful, powerful.
Frank’s heart twisted painfully when he saw her. Alexa.
She walked in slowly, every movement clean and controlled. She wore a fitted white suit that made her look like she ruled the world.
Her face was beautiful, but her eyes were cold—so cold they felt like ice pressed against his skin.
Frank stood up automatically, like a man reacting out of habit. A small part of him hoped she would smile. Or look guilty. Or show even a trace of warmth. Something. Anything.
But Alexa did not even look at him. She sat down across from him, crossing her legs with a calm confidence that made the room feel even smaller.
Frank swallowed. “What did I do to deserve this?” he asked. His voice trembled, heavy with pain.
Alexa turned her head slightly, still avoiding his eyes. “Didn’t you tell him?” she asked Lily.
Lily nodded. “Good,” Alexa said, leaning back in her chair. Her voice was smooth, but sharp. “A relationship with Fredrick Maurice will take my career to the next level. It is the best choice for me.”
Frank flinched. Every word felt like a knife pressing deeper. “Alexa…” he whispered.
She finally looked at him, but there was no warmth. Only cold judgment. “You are not my type, Frank. You have nothing. Nothing to offer. My reputation is everything to me.”
The room grew heavier. The air felt thick, almost choking.
Frank lowered his gaze. He grabbed the pen. His hand shook violently as he pulled the papers closer.
He signed his name slowly, each stroke of the pen feeling like a piece of him tearing away. A tear slid down his cheek and landed on the page.
When he finished, he pushed the papers away. Lily snatched them instantly, her smile vicious, but Alexa wasn’t done.
She placed another document on the table. “This is compensation. Take it.”
Frank stared at it. His lips curved into a tired, humorless smile. Without hesitation, he picked it up, tore it into small pieces, and let the pieces fall gently onto the floor. “I don’t need your money.”
Alexa narrowed her eyes. “Then what do you want?”
Frank’s gaze fell to the necklace around her neck. A small pendant. The one he had given her long ago. The one he bought the night he promised he would always protect her future.
“I want my necklace back,” he said softly.
Alexa froze. A flicker of something, maybe guilt, maybe hesitation, passed through her expression.
Her fingers brushed the pendant slowly. She knew its meaning. She knew what it represented, but the hesitation vanished.
With a sharp tug, she pulled the necklace off and tossed it across the table. “Take it.”
Frank reached out and held the pendant. He closed his hand around it tightly. His throat burned with emotions he could no longer name.
Alexa stood, grabbed the papers, and walked toward the door. Lily followed, her smile triumphant.
The door closed behind them with a soft click, but it sounded louder than thunder to Frank.
Silence returned.
Frank sank into his chair. He stared down at the necklace in his palm. It felt heavier than metal. Heavy with memories. Heavy with broken promises. His chest rose and fell in slow, painful breaths.
Alexa had chosen Fredrick. She had chosen power. She had chosen status. She had chosen to erase him.
Frank wiped his tears and clenched his jaw. If Fredrick Maurice was the reason… then Fredrick Maurice would pay.
And the clock on the wall kept ticking. Tick. Tick. Tick. As if counting down to the moment Frank’s quiet world would explode.

The coffee shop was warm and calm, filled with soft music that drifted like a gentle breeze. People sat at small wooden tables, laughing quietly or speaking in low voices as the smell of fresh coffee floated through the room. The sunlight from the wide windows painted the floor in soft gold. Frank sat at the counter, his elbows resting on the cold metal surface as the club’s music pounded through him. Every heavy beat thumped against his chest like a fist. Neon lights flashed over the crowd, turning faces red, blue, then red again. People laughed, shouted, and moved wildly, but none of it reached him. His mind drifted far away, until something pulled him back like a blade cutting through fog.His eyes froze. There, in the middle of the dance floor, were Frederick and Alexa.Frederick’s hand rested boldly on Alexa’s waist. Alexa leaned into him like she had always belonged in that position. Their smiles mirrored each other.A cold weight settled inside Frank’s stomach. His fingers stiffened around his glass. He told himself to look away. He told himself it was none of his concern. I won’t let it go. I promise you that.”He tightened his hold on Alexa’s arm. Alexa lifted her chin proudly, almost as if she thought she had won something. Together, they walked away quickly. Their footsteps echoed loudly in the wide hall until the sound faded and the heavy doors slammed behind them.Frank leaned against the shopping cart filled with clothes and let out a small, surprised laugh. He did not laugh because he was happy. He laughed because the sight of Frederick retreating so easily was s
