The smoke filled the sky like a thick, suffocating cloud, casting a shadow over the village. Ash's heart raced as he stood frozen in the doorway, staring at the destruction unfolding before him. The Veil’s power had awoken fully, and there was no turning back now.

People were running in all directions, shouting in panic. Ash’s feet moved instinctively, carrying him toward the source of the chaos. As he sprinted through the village, he could hear the screams—the terrified cries of those who were too slow to escape.

When he reached the clearing where the stone had been, he froze. The symbol was glowing brighter than ever before, its eerie light pulsating with the rhythm of a heartbeat. But that wasn’t what stopped him. What stopped him was the figure standing in the center of the clearing, bathed in the light of the Veil.

It was the same cloaked figure from the night before—the one who had warned him of his fate.

“Ash,” the figure said, his voice smooth and chilling. “You’re too late.”

Ash’s pulse quickened. “What did you do? What’s happening to the village?”

The figure turned his head slowly, the hood of his cloak casting his face in shadow. “This is the beginning. The Veil has chosen this place to begin its reclamation. It is not bound by time or space. It is eternal, and it has no mercy.”

Ash clenched his fists, his mind racing. “You’re the one who brought this here, aren’t you?”

The figure’s lips twisted into a smile, though it was hardly reassuring. “I did not bring the Veil here, Ash. It was always here, waiting for someone to awaken it. You are the key.”

Ash shook his head, taking a step back. “I didn’t ask for this! I don’t want to be the key! I don’t want the Veil’s power!”

The figure's eyes gleamed in the dim light. “It doesn’t matter what you want. The Veil is within you now. The power is yours to control—or to be consumed by.”

The words felt like a punch to Ash’s gut. He knew he had to stop this, but how? He had no idea how to control the power inside him, let alone how to protect his village from its wrath.

“Who are you?” Ash demanded. “What do you want with me?”

The figure took a step forward, his presence so overwhelming that Ash felt like he couldn’t breathe. “I am a herald of the Veil. I am the one who guides those chosen by it. My name is Aethar, and I have waited a long time for you to awaken.”

“Aethar,” Ash repeated, feeling the name settle uneasily in his mind. “And what exactly is it that you want?”

Aethar’s gaze softened for a moment, but the cruelty in his eyes never faded. “I want you to embrace your destiny, Ash. You were always meant for this. The Veil is part of you now. Its power flows through your veins. You can either control it, or you can watch it consume you—and everything you care about.”

Ash felt the familiar tingling sensation of the Veil stirring within him. It wasn’t just in his mind anymore. It was in his very blood, urging him to surrender to its power. He could feel it calling to him, promising strength, but at a terrible cost.

“I won’t let it control me,” Ash spat, his voice trembling with defiance.

Aethar’s smile widened, as if Ash’s resistance amused him. “We’ll see. The Veil is not a force you can fight with mere willpower. It will twist you, reshape you, until you are its servant, whether you accept it or not.”

Ash felt a surge of energy ripple through him, and before he could react, a tendril of dark power shot out from the Veil’s symbol, wrapping around his arm. He gasped, his body seizing as the power began to overwhelm him. It wasn’t just physical—it was emotional, too. His thoughts blurred, and all he could hear was the voice of the Veil, whispering promises of strength and control.

Embrace me, Ash. Let me guide you to power. You are not weak anymore.

“No!” Ash shouted, fighting against the pull. “I won’t be your pawn!”

But the power only tightened its grip, and Ash felt his knees buckle beneath him. His vision blurred, and for a moment, he thought he saw the faces of the villagers—his friends, his family—twisted into horrifying expressions, their bodies writhing as they were consumed by the darkness.

Terror gripped him, and he fought against it with every ounce of strength he had left. I won’t let it happen. I won’t let them all die.

With a roar, Ash wrenched his arm free from the Veil’s grip. The dark tendrils recoiled like a wounded snake, hissing in fury. Aethar stepped back, watching with a mixture of amusement and admiration.

“You are stronger than I thought,” Aethar said, his voice tinged with something like respect. “But this is only the beginning, Ash. You cannot keep fighting it forever.”

Ash gasped for breath, his heart racing. “I don’t care. I will stop the Veil. I will not let it take everything.”

Aethar chuckled softly. “Very well. But remember this, Ash: You cannot defeat the Veil without first understanding it. And understanding the Veil will cost you more than you can imagine.”

The ground beneath them trembled as the Veil’s power pulsed once more, dark clouds swirling above. Aethar raised his hand, and the darkness seemed to obey, surging toward Ash like a tidal wave.

In that moment, Ash realized that this battle would not be won with strength alone. The Veil was far more ancient, far more dangerous than he could have ever anticipated. And as much as he hated to admit it, he knew that in order to survive, he would need to learn to control the very thing he feared the most.

The Next Step

The village was in chaos. Ash could hear the distant cries of the villagers, their voices strained with fear and desperation. But the more pressing matter was the darkness that loomed over them—threatening to swallow everything whole.

Ash had no choice but to act.

Turning to face Aethar, who was watching him with that same unsettling calm, Ash steeled himself. “I don’t care what it takes. I will fight the Veil. I will save this village.”

Aethar’s smile deepened, and for the first time, Ash saw a flicker of something like pity in his eyes. “Very well, Ash. But know this: You cannot run from the Veil. It will always be a part of you. And soon, you will see just how much of it is inside you.”

Ash clenched his fists, determination burning in his chest. He had no time to waste. The battle for his village—and for his soul—had only just begun.

What if I become like them—the Veilborne?”Cael walked over and sat beside him. “That’s the choice you’ll face every time you use it. The Veil doesn’t grant power freely. It demands something in return. That’s why most fail… they give it too much.”As
