The wind howled through the trees as Ash trekked through the dense forest, the moonlight barely breaking through the canopy above. His heart pounded in his chest as he pressed forward, his mind focused on the task ahead.

He had no choice but to seek out the ancient temple—the one that was said to hold the answers to the Veil’s origins. If he was going to have any hope of controlling the darkness that had taken root within him, he needed to understand it, to learn how to harness its power before it consumed him completely.

The whispers of the Veil were growing louder in his mind, its voice slipping through the cracks of his thoughts like a serpent slithering through the grass. You cannot escape me, Ash. I am with you always.

He gritted his teeth, pushing the voice aside. The last thing he needed was to lose his focus now.

As he moved deeper into the forest, the trees seemed to close in around him, their twisted branches reaching out like skeletal hands. It was as if the very forest itself was alive, watching him, waiting for him to make a mistake.

After hours of traveling, Ash finally saw it—an ancient stone structure emerging from the underbrush, its towering walls covered in vines and moss. The temple loomed before him like a forgotten relic of an age long past, its entrance guarded by two massive stone statues of winged creatures, their eyes hollow and unseeing.

Ash approached cautiously, his senses heightened. Every instinct told him to be wary, to be prepared for whatever might lie within. But there was no turning back now. He had come too far.

He stepped past the statues, and the air grew heavier with each step. The Veil seemed to pulse in time with his heartbeat, as if it was aware of his presence in the temple. The walls were etched with intricate symbols—strange runes that Ash didn’t recognize. They glowed faintly, casting an eerie light on the stone floors as he ventured deeper into the heart of the temple.

The silence was oppressive, broken only by the sound of Ash’s footsteps echoing off the walls. It felt as though time itself had stopped within these walls, leaving him alone with the weight of centuries of secrets.

At the center of the temple stood a massive stone altar, its surface carved with the same runes that adorned the walls. It was as if the altar itself was a key, a focal point for the power that pulsed through the temple.

Ash stepped forward, his breath caught in his throat. He could feel the Veil calling to him again, urging him to approach. He didn’t understand why, but there was something about the altar that felt familiar—something that resonated deep within him.

Without thinking, he reached out to touch the altar. The moment his fingers brushed against the cold stone, the air around him crackled with energy. The symbols on the altar flared to life, glowing brighter and brighter until the entire temple was bathed in a blinding light.

Ash staggered back, his heart racing as the light overwhelmed his senses. The Veil surged within him, its power pushing against his mind, clawing at the edges of his consciousness. He could hear it more clearly now, its voice echoing in his thoughts.

You are mine, Ash. You always have been.

He tried to resist, to fight against the pull, but the force was too strong. His vision blurred, and for a moment, he thought he saw something—someone—standing in the light. A figure, tall and cloaked in shadows, its face obscured by a mask of darkness.

The figure raised its hand, and Ash felt himself being drawn toward it, his body moving against his will. He tried to cry out, but the words caught in his throat. His limbs felt heavy, as if he were sinking into the very stone beneath his feet.

Embrace your destiny, the figure whispered, its voice a haunting echo. You were chosen for a purpose, Ash. You cannot escape it.

Ash’s body trembled, and his knees buckled beneath him. He fell to the ground, his head spinning as the light consumed him. The last thing he saw before his vision faded was the figure’s outstretched hand reaching toward him.

Ash awoke with a start, gasping for breath as his eyes snapped open. The temple was gone, replaced by the familiar surroundings of the forest. He was lying on the ground, the remnants of the strange dream still fresh in his mind.

He sat up quickly, his pulse pounding in his ears. Had it been a vision? Or had the Veil somehow transported him to another realm?

As he took in his surroundings, Ash noticed that the night had deepened. The air was still and heavy, and the only sound was the rustle of the wind through the trees. He couldn’t shake the feeling that he wasn’t alone.

He stood slowly, his legs unsteady beneath him. His body still felt strange, as if the power of the Veil was lingering within him, stretching and pulling at the edges of his being. But there was something else, too—a new sense of clarity.

For the first time since the Veil had taken root inside him, Ash felt like he could see the path ahead. The dream—vision—had shown him something, a glimpse of what he needed to do. The figure, the altar, the Veil—it was all connected. And he was the key to unlocking it.

The figure had spoken of a purpose, of a destiny. Ash didn’t know what that meant yet, but he was determined to find out. He couldn’t do this alone. He needed to gather allies, to learn everything he could about the Veil, its origins, and how to control it before it consumed him entirely.

But first, he needed to leave the forest and return to the village. The answers he sought were not here, not yet. And he wasn’t ready to face whatever the Veil had in store for him. Not until he understood more about himself, about the power that surged through his veins.

As Ash made his way back to the village, he could feel the weight of the journey ahead pressing on him. The path would not be easy. But he had no choice. The Veil was inside him now, and he had to learn how to wield its power—or destroy it before it destroyed him.

Just for a moment.”Cael, standing a few feet behind him, nodded. “You didn’t just resist it—you bent it to your will. That’s not something even the Whisperers can do easily.”He turned to her, uncertainty flickering in his eyes. “But what if I lose control next time? What if I become like them—the Veilborne?”Cael walked over and sat beside him. “That’s the choice you’ll face every time you use it. The Veil doesn’t grant power freely. It demands something in return. That’s why most fail… they give it too much.”As
