Commander Darian had been waiting for this moment for thirty years.

He sat in his office, surrounded by the spoils of his conquests. The heads of powerful beasts lined the walls. The skulls of rivals hung from hooks. Maps of the continent covered every surface. He had spent his life studying the ancient texts. He had spent his fortune funding expeditions. He had spent his soul chasing a dream that everyone else had called impossible.

But now the dream was real.

The golden light had been seen in the mountains. His spies had confirmed it. A pillar of light that reached the heavens. A roar that echoed across the peaks. The awakening of something ancient. Something powerful. Something he had been hunting for longer than most people had been alive.

His second in command entered the room. Captain Vex was a tall man with a scar across his face. He had been with Darian for fifteen years. He had never failed a mission. He was loyal. He was ruthless. He was exactly what Darian needed.

"Commander," Vex said. "The scouts have returned. The light came from a hidden valley in the northern range. They found signs of a camp. Recent tracks. It is the boy. The one from the Day of Summoning. He is the one who bonded with the defect."

Darian leaned forward. His eyes were cold. "Tell me everything. Leave nothing out."

Vex nodded. "His name is Kael. He comes from a minor family. His father is a merchant. Nothing important. His mother is from a lower noble house. They disowned him after the summoning. His betrothed broke their engagement. He has been living on the streets for weeks. He has no money. No power. No allies."

Darian smiled. It was a thin smile. A hungry smile. "A nobody. A castaway. And yet the Primeval Beast chose him over everyone else. Does that not strike you as strange?"

Vex shrugged. "Perhaps the beast is still weak. Perhaps it made a mistake. Perhaps it will abandon him when it gets stronger."

Darian shook his head. "You do not understand. The Primeval Beasts do not make mistakes. They choose with purpose. They choose based on something deeper than power. Something that the scholars have never been able to explain. This boy is not a coincidence. He is a threat."

He stood up. He walked to the window. The city spread out below him. Thousands of people going about their lives. They had no idea what was coming. They had no idea what he was about to unleash.

"I was there," Darian said. His voice was quiet. Distant. "I was there when the last Primeval Beast was sealed. I was a young soldier. A nobody. Just like this boy. I saw the power of those creatures. I saw what they could do. I saw empires fall in a single night. I saw cities burn to the ground. I saw gods die screaming."

He turned to face Vex. His eyes were burning.

"The rulers used a forbidden weapon to trap them. A weapon that drained their power. That broke their bodies. That made them small and weak. They called them defects. They convinced the world they were worthless. They erased them from history. But I never forgot. I never stopped searching. And now, after three decades, I have finally found one."

He walked back to his desk. He picked up a piece of stone. Ancient stone. Covered in symbols. The same symbols that marked the Primeval Beasts. He had found it in a ruin deep in the desert. It had been his only lead. His only hope.

"This stone belonged to the last Primeval Beast," he said. "It was a fragment of its prison. I have carried it with me for years. It has guided me. It has led me here. And now it is time to finish what I started."

He set the stone down. He looked at Vex. His expression was hard. Unyielding.

"I want the beast," he said. "Alive if possible. Dead if necessary. The boy does not matter. He is irrelevant. He is nothing. Kill him if you have to. Just bring me the beast."

Vex saluted. "It will be done, Commander. I will not fail you."

He turned to leave. Darian stopped him with a raised hand.

"Wait," he said. "There is something else. The boy's beast. It may be weak now. It may be broken. But that will not last. The Primeval Beasts grow quickly. They adapt. They evolve. Every day that passes, they get stronger. We cannot afford to wait. We have to strike now."

Vex nodded. "I understand. I will take the best hunters. The most experienced trackers. We will move quickly. We will find him before he has a chance to prepare."

Darian smiled. "Good. That is good. Go now. Do not waste a single moment. The hunt is everything. The hunt is all that matters."

Vex left. His footsteps echoed down the corridor. Darian watched him go. Then he turned back to the window.

The mountains loomed in the distance. Dark and silent. Full of secrets. Somewhere out there, a boy and a beast were hiding. Preparing. Growing stronger.

Darian was not worried. He had faced worse enemies. He had survived worse battles. He would find the boy. He would take the beast. And he would claim the power that had been denied to him for so long.

The hunt was finally beginning. And he would not rest until it was over.

Meanwhile, in the hidden valley, Kael and Mira were packing their belongings. They had very little. A few scraps of food. A canteen of water. A torn blanket. It was not much. But it was all they had.

Zephyr stood in the center of the valley. Its wings were spread wide. Its scales gleamed in the morning light. It was magnificent. Beautiful. Powerful. But it was also a target.

Kael watched the creature with a mix of awe and fear. He had never seen anything like it. He had never felt anything like the bond they shared. It was deeper than anything he had ever known.

"We have to leave," Mira said. Her voice was urgent. "The light. The roar. Everyone saw it. Everyone heard it. The hunters will be coming. We cannot stay here."

Kael nodded. He knew she was right. But he did not want to leave. This valley was the first place he had felt safe in weeks. It was the first place he had felt hope.

"Where will we go?" he asked. "We have nowhere. No one. Nothing."

Mira touched his arm. Her eyes were kind. "We will figure it out. Together. That is what we do now. We figure it out together."

Kael looked at her. She was small. She was thin. She was just as broken as he was. But she was also strong. Stronger than anyone he had ever known. She had survived on her own for months. She had refused to give up.

"Thank you," he said. "I do not know what I would do without you."

Mira smiled. It was a small smile. A tired smile. But it was real.

"You would probably be dead," she said. "Let us be honest."

Kael laughed. It was a surprised laugh. A genuine laugh. He had not laughed in weeks. It felt strange. It felt good.

"Probably," he agreed. "Definitely. Let us go."

Zephyr approached them. It lowered its head. Its golden eyes met Kael's. There was understanding in those eyes. Wisdom. Loyalty. It knew they had to leave. It was ready.

"Stay close to me," Kael said. "Stay hidden. If anyone comes, do not fight. Just run. We will find another place. Another shelter. Another valley."

Zephyr chirped. It understood. It agreed.

They left the valley. They moved through the mountains. The terrain was rough. The weather was harsh. But they did not stop. They could not stop. The hunters were coming.

Kael felt the weight of the world on his shoulders. He had a beast to protect. A friend to keep safe. A future to fight for. He did not know if he was strong enough. He did not know if he could do it.

But he had to try. He had no choice. The only other option was giving up. And he had already given up too much.

He looked at Zephyr. The creature walked beside him. Its wings were folded. Its head was held high. It was not afraid. It trusted him. It believed in him.

Kael felt a surge of determination. He would not let Zephyr down. He would not let Mira down. He would not let himself down.

He would fight. He would survive. He would rise. And one day, the people who hunted him would be the ones running.

A place where they could rest. They blended in with the crowd. Kael kept his hood up. Mira kept her head down. Zephyr was hidden under a cloak. The creature was still too weak to fly, but it was getting stronger. Its wings were fully mended. Its scales were bright. It was almost ready. They bought supplies at the market. Bread. Water. A few herbs for healing. They kept their heads down. They did not speak to anyone. They did not draw attention. But they listened. The hunters were closing in.Kael could hear them behind him. The thundering of hooves against rock. The shouting of men giving orders. The barking of tracking hounds. They were getting closer. Every moment they were getting closer. He pushed forward. His legs burned. His lungs screamed. Zephyr was draped across his back, heavier than it had any right to be. The creature was still weak from its awakening. Its wings were mended but not strong enough for flight. Its legs could barely hold its own weight. Kael had to carry it. He had no choice."Keep going," Mira shouted from behind him. "Do not stop. Do not look back."Kael did not look back. He kept his eyes forward. He scanned the terrain for any advantage. Any hiding spot. Any escape route. The mountains were unforgiving. Steep cliffs. Loose rocks. Narrow paths that dropped into nothing. Zephyr would not stop moving. The creature paced around the shelter. Back and forth. Back and forth. Its claws scraped against the cracked floor. Its wings twitched. Its tail lashed from side to side. It made sounds Kael had never heard before. Deep growls. High pitched whines. Strange noises that did not seem to come from any living thing.Kael watched with growing alarm. "What is happening to it? It has never done this before. It could barely move a few days ago. Now it will not stay still."Mira stood beside him. Her face was pale. Her hands were shaking. "I do not know. But something is changing. Something big. Look at its eyes. They are glowing."Kael looked. Mira was right. Zephyr's golden eyes were brighter than ever. They pulsed with light. They seemed to see things that were not there. Things from another world."We have to take it somewhere safe," Mira said. "Somewhere no one can see. If it transforms here, everyone will know. The hunters will find us."Kael thought about th

  • The Markings

The symbols on Zephyr's scales were not random.Kael had always known that. Deep down, he had felt it. But he had been too tired. Too scared. Too busy trying to keep the creature alive to think about what the markings meant. Now Mira had said the words out loud. And he could not unsee them."They look like writing," Mira said. She was kneeling beside Zephyr. Her finger traced the patterns on its scales. "Look at this line. It curves like a letter. And this one. It loops. These are not natural markings. Someone put them there. Or something."Kael knelt beside her. He looked closer. She was right. The markings were organized. They formed patterns. They repeated in certain places. They were deliberate. They meant something."I never noticed that before," he said. "I mean, I saw them. But I did not think about what they could be. I was too worried about keeping Zephyr alive."Mira looked at him. "You have been through a lot. It is okay to miss things. But now you have to pay attention. Th
