The roar of the crowd was deafening.

Thousands of voices screamed in excitement. Thousands of hands clapped and waved. The arena was packed to the brim with nobles, commoners, officials, and Beast Tamers from every corner of the land. Banners fluttered in the wind. Music blared from the horns. The tournament of the century had finally begun.

And Kael was standing in the center of it all.

He wore a mask. A simple black mask that covered his face from his nose to his forehead. His hair was hidden under a dark hood. His clothes were plain and unremarkable. He looked like nobody. He looked like nothing. That was exactly what he wanted.

He had entered under a false name. The Ghost Tamer. It was fitting. He was a ghost. A nobody. Someone who did not exist. Someone who could disappear into the shadows at any moment.

But today, he was not going to disappear. Today, he was going to fight.

Mira was in the stands. She had found a seat near the back. She was watching him with anxious eyes. She had argued against this plan. She had begged him to reconsider. But he had refused. He had made up his mind. He was going to fight. He was going to win. And he was going to show the world the truth.

Zephyr was beside him. The creature was hidden under a cloak. Its scales were covered. Its wings were folded. It looked small. Weak. Unimpressive. That was exactly what Kael wanted. Let them underestimate him. Let them think he was nothing. It would make their defeat all the sweeter.

"Introducing the contestants," the announcer bellowed. "First, from the northern provinces, the great and powerful Brutus! Known for his fearsome flame lion, he has never lost a match. He is the favorite to win this tournament!"

The crowd erupted in cheers. Brutus stepped forward. He was huge. A mountain of muscle and arrogance. He wore expensive armor. His beast was a massive lion with a mane of fire. The creature roared. Flames shot from its mouth. The crowd went wild.

"And his opponent," the announcer continued, "a newcomer to the tournament. He calls himself the Ghost Tamer. Little is known about him. He appeared out of nowhere. He has no history. No reputation. No victories. Let us see if he has what it takes!"

The crowd murmured. Some laughed. Some booed. They did not expect much from the masked nobody. He was small. His beast looked weak. He was an underdog. A joke. A waste of time.

Kael ignored them. He kept his eyes on Brutus. He studied the man's stance. The way he held his shoulders. The way he commanded his beast. He was strong. Confident. Arrogant. He would make mistakes. He would underestimate his opponent. That would be his undoing.

"The match begins," the announcer shouted. "Fight!"

Brutus charged. His lion lunged forward. Its claws were extended. Its mane was ablaze. It was a terrifying sight. The crowd gasped. They expected the masked tamer to be torn apart in seconds.

Kael moved. He dodged to the left. The lion's claws missed him by inches. He rolled to the right. He came up behind the beast. Zephyr moved with him. The creature was fast. Faster than anyone expected.

"Run," Kael whispered. "Do not fight. Just run."

Zephyr obeyed. It darted across the arena. The lion chased it. Zephyr was small. It was nimble. It could fit through gaps that the lion could not. It dodged and weaved. It kept just out of reach.

"Stop running and fight," Brutus shouted. "Face me like a man!"

Kael did not respond. He kept moving. He kept avoiding. He was not going to fight on Brutus's terms. He was going to fight on his own.

The crowd grew impatient. They wanted action. They wanted blood. They started to boo. They started to throw things. They wanted the masked tamer to stand still and get crushed.

Kael ignored them. He watched the lion. He watched its pattern. The way it moved. The way it breathed. The way it tired. Every beast had a weakness. Every beast had a limit. He just had to find it.

"There," he muttered. "The flank. It favors its right side. It is weaker on the left."

He signaled to Zephyr. The creature understood. It changed direction. It darted toward the lion's left side. The lion turned to follow. Its body twisted awkwardly. Its balance was off.

"Now," Kael shouted. "Strike now!"

Zephyr lunged. Its claws slashed across the lion's flank. The beast roared in pain. It stumbled. Its legs gave out. It crashed to the ground.

Brutus panicked. "Get up," he screamed. "Get up and fight!"

The lion tried to stand. It could not. Its flank was bleeding. Its leg was injured. It was done.

Zephyr stood over the fallen beast. Its golden eyes glowed. Its scales shimmered. It looked like a predator. A hunter. A champion.

Brutus fell to his knees. He surrendered. He could not continue. His beast was beaten. His pride was broken.

"The winner," the announcer shouted, "the Ghost Tamer!"

The crowd was stunned. They had expected an easy victory for Brutus. They had expected the masked nobody to be destroyed. Instead, they had witnessed something incredible. Something unexpected.

The whispers started. Who was he? Where did he come from? How did he win? No one knew. No one could explain.

Kael walked away. He did not celebrate. He did not acknowledge the crowd. He kept his mask on. He kept his head down. He disappeared into the shadows.

But someone was watching. A woman in the stands. She had seen something familiar. The way he moved. The way he fought. The way he commanded his beast. It reminded her of someone. Someone she had abandoned. Someone she had left behind.

Seraphine leaned forward. Her heart was pounding. Her hands were trembling. Could it be him? Could it really be him?

She watched the masked tamer disappear. She felt a surge of emotion. Guilt. Regret. Longing. She had made a terrible mistake. She had chosen status over love. She had chosen her family over her heart.

She had to know the truth. She had to find him. She had to know if the Ghost Tamer was really the boy she had abandoned.

She stood up. She pushed through the crowd. She followed the masked tamer. She would not let him escape. She would not let him disappear.

"Wait," she called out. "Please wait."

Kael stopped. He heard her voice. He recognized it. His heart sank. It was her. Of course it was her. Of all the people in the arena, it had to be her.

He did not turn around. He could not face her. Not yet. Not like this.

"Please," Seraphine said. "I just want to talk. I just want to know who you are."

Kael was silent for a long moment. Then he spoke. His voice was cold. Hard.

"You do not want to know who I am," he said. "Trust me. You do not want to know."

He walked away. He disappeared into the crowd. Seraphine watched him go. She felt tears in her eyes. She had found him. She had found the boy she had abandoned. And she had lost him all over again.

But she would not give up. She would find him again. She would make things right. She would prove that she had changed. Even if it took the rest of her life.

The village was small, but the news was big.Kael and Mira had been walking for three days. They had crossed mountains. They had hidden in caves. They had slept under the stars. Their bodies were tired. Their feet were sore. But they had finally reached civilization. A tiny village at the foot of the mountains. A place where no one knew them. A place where they could rest. They blended in with the crowd. Kael kept his hood up. Mira kept her head down. Zephyr was hidden under a cloak. The creature was still too weak to fly, but it was getting stronger. Its wings were fully mended. Its scales were bright. It was almost ready. They bought supplies at the market. Bread. Water. A few herbs for healing. They kept their heads down. They did not speak to anyone. They did not draw attention. But they listened. They listened to everything."Did you see the light?" a merchant asked his customer. "They say it came from the mountains. They say it was a sign.""A sign of what?" the customer asked.

The hunters were closing in.Kael could hear them behind him. The thundering of hooves against rock. The shouting of men giving orders. The barking of tracking hounds. They were getting closer. Every moment they were getting closer. He pushed forward. His legs burned. His lungs screamed. Zephyr was draped across his back, heavier than it had any right to be. The creature was still weak from its awakening. Its wings were mended but not strong enough for flight. Its legs could barely hold its own weight. Kael had to carry it. He had no choice."Keep going," Mira shouted from behind him. "Do not stop. Do not look back."Kael did not look back. He kept his eyes forward. He scanned the terrain for any advantage. Any hiding spot. Any escape route. The mountains were unforgiving. Steep cliffs. Loose rocks. Narrow paths that dropped into nothing. One wrong step and they would fall to their deaths. But falling would be better than being caught. Falling would be better than letting the hunters

Commander Darian had been waiting for this moment for thirty years. He sat in his office, surrounded by the spoils of his conquests. The heads of powerful beasts lined the walls. Zephyr would not stop moving. The creature paced around the shelter. Back and forth. Back and forth. Its claws scraped against the cracked floor. Its wings twitched. Its tail lashed from side to side. It made sounds Kael had never heard before. Deep growls. High pitched whines. Strange noises that did not seem to come from any living thing.Kael watched with growing alarm. "What is happening to it? It has never done this before. It could barely move a few days ago. Now it will not stay still."Mira stood beside him. Her face was pale. Her hands were shaking. "I do not know. But something is changing. Something big. Look at its eyes. They are glowing."Kael looked. Mira was right. Zephyr's golden eyes were brighter than ever. They pulsed with light. They seemed to see things that were not there. Things from another world."We have to take it somewhere safe," Mira said. "Somewhere no one can see. If it transforms here, everyone will know. The hunters will find us."Kael thought about th

  • The Markings

The symbols on Zephyr's scales were not random.Kael had always known that. Deep down, he had felt it. But he had been too tired. Too scared. Too busy trying to keep the creature alive to think about what the markings meant. Now Mira had said the words out loud. And he could not unsee them."They look like writing," Mira said. She was kneeling beside Zephyr. Her finger traced the patterns on its scales. "Look at this line. It curves like a letter. And this one. It loops. These are not natural markings. Someone put them there. Or something."Kael knelt beside her. He looked closer. She was right. The markings were organized. They formed patterns. They repeated in certain places. They were deliberate. They meant something."I never noticed that before," he said. "I mean, I saw them. But I did not think about what they could be. I was too worried about keeping Zephyr alive."Mira looked at him. "You have been through a lot. It is okay to miss things. But now you have to pay attention. Th
