Roberto asked again, his question lingering in the air, heavy and dangerous. “Why are you protecting her?”

Niccolo could feel the weight of those words pressing on him, demanding an answer. Every instinct screamed at him to apologize, to drop to his knees and beg for mercy. That was what Roberto wanted, what everyone in that mansion had been trained to do, to submit. But the anger burning in Niccolo’s chest was stronger than his fear.

He stood tall, and said nothing.

Roberto’s eyes narrowed, sharp and calculating. Silence was not submission, it was defiance. “I’ll ask you one more time,” he said softly, dangerously, “why are you protecting her?”

Niccolo clenched his jaw but remained silent.

The old man’s smile widened, but it wasn’t amusement, it was the smile of a predator. With a swift motion, Roberto lifted his walking stick and struck Niccolo across the shoulder. The crack echoed through the room. Niccolo winced, but he didn’t move.

Another strike. The stick slammed into his ribs,

Ariana sat frozen, her hands pressed against her knees, staring at Niccolo with an unreadable expression. Confusion swirled with hurt in her chest. She opened her mouth, closed it again, then looked at him as though she might be able to pull the truth from his eyes if she stared long enough.Selene, however, blinked, still in disbelief. She thought she had misheard, that maybe Niccolo’s words had been twisted by her own wishful imagination. But no, when she searched his face for the slightest flicker of humor, she found none. His jaw was set, his eyes steady. He was serious.Niccolo inhaled deeply, steadying himself. Every word he spoke was deliberate, his tone calm though the air around him burned with tension. “I know how it sounds. But this is what I want.”He looked first at Ariana, the woman who had been kind to him when he had nothing, who had never turned away despite his scars and flaws. He knew her feelings were sincere, and the way she had been open about them from the start

Niccolo had made up his mind.He knew he couldn’t depend on the whispering voice in his head. Its guidance, its mysterious mature, had only dragged him deeper into shadows he didn’t understand. If he wanted real answers, he needed to go back to the only person who had given him even a fragment of truth, the elderly woman. But that could wait. For now, he had another promise to keep. The two days he gave Ariana had passed, and he was sure she would be waiting. That morning, Niccolo rose before dawn. He stood before the mirror, adjusting his shirt until every line lay neat against his shoulders. His face was calm, but beneath the surface, his blood carried the weight of a thousand possibilities.“Selene,” he called softly. She emerged from the bedroom, still in her night robe, her hair tumbling in loose curls. “Yes?”“Get dressed,” Niccolo said. “Something nice. We’re going out.”She tilted her head curiously. “Where?”“Somewhere important,” he replied, his tone leaving no room for furt

The apartment was silent except for the faint hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen. Selene had long since drifted to sleep, her breathing steady and soft from the bedroom. Niccolo, however, sat rigidly on the couch, the leather briefcase resting on the coffee table in front of him like a predator waiting for him to make the first move.He had avoided it long enough. The weight of it had been following him like a shadow, a constant reminder that something inside carried the power to change everything.Niccolo inhaled sharply and unlatched the locks. The metallic clicks sounded louder than they should have in the quiet of the night. His hands trembled slightly, but he forced them steady as he lifted the lid.Inside, the contents were neatly arranged, almost ritualistic. The first item he pulled out was the photograph of Niccolo's birthday. He stared at it for several moments, still getting chills from the amount of resemblance they had to each other. Another photograph was of he and

The boutique had never felt so heavy with silence. The manager’s voice echoed like a judge handing down a final sentence.“Lyla, you are dismissed immediately. As of this moment, you are banned from ever entering this mall again. And you,” she added sharply, turning toward Kimberly who was still staring at Niccolo, “you are also forbidden from ever stepping foot here. If either of you disobey, you will be arrested on sight.”The air seemed to vanish from the room. Shoppers stopped pretending to browse and openly stared.Kimberly blinked rapidly, her jaw slack. The audacity of being thrown into the same sentence as Lyla cut deep. But it was Lyla who truly broke.“No no, please,” Lyla whispered, her legs buckling. She dropped to her knees on the polished marble floor, tears streaming down her cheeks. “Please, ma’am, don’t do this. I need this job. I’ve been loyal for years. You can’t just—”Her voice cracked. The manager didn’t even glance at her. Her gaze was fixed entirely on Niccolo,

The rest of the day passed by quietly and after they had dinner, the little family sat together in Niccolo’s living room. The mood was light, though a quiet anticipation stirred beneath the surface. For the first time in years, hope stretched its hands toward them.Niccolo leaned back on the couch, his fingers idly drumming against the armrest. “Concerning your living arrangements, do you guys have any particular location in mind?”They exchanged glances. Mary, hugging her knees, spoke first. “We don’t know where exactly. Just… somewhre we can have our quiet begining. Somewhere safe. And if it's alright with you… smewhere close enough to you.”Teddy chuckled. “Definitely. Close enough that I can come around for dinner. You don’t know how many years it’s been since I’ve had a meal like today’s.”Niccolo’s lips curved faintly. “Fair enough. I’ll call my agent and we can check a few places tomorrow.”“We? As in …us too?” Mary asked, gesturing at herself and Jake. “Yeah. I mean, you are

When Niccolo opened the door, he was met with Ariana's smiling face. Her familiar voice had already shaken him a little, but when she stepped into view, her beauty still caught him off guard. She had dressed simply, in a pale blue blouse tucked neatly into white jeans, but she carried herself with the quiet confidence of someone who had grown up under the public gaze. But Ariana’s smile faltered the instant her eyes fell on the woman standing just behind him. Selene stood close enough to Niccolo that her presence felt like a claim. Chubby, curvy, her soft features marked with determination, she looked at Ariana as though she had been waiting for this very moment.“Is this her?” Selene asked softly, though her voice held more certainty than doubt.Niccolo’s jaw tightened. He didn’t need to answer— the look in his eyes was more than enough.Ariana crossed her arms, trying to conceal the sting she felt in her chest. “How did you know I was back already?” Niccolo asked, his tone unexpect
