Now that Niccolo had made the decision to accept the fortune and the past that came with it, the weight on his shoulders felt different. He wasn’t sure if it was lighter or heavier, but it was undeniable, he was stepping into a world he barely understood.

Accepting the briefcase had been like signing an invisible contract with fate, one that tied him to a man he wasn’t, and yet somehow was.

His second wish… that was the next step. He had been turning the thought over in his mind, wondering how he could ask, since what he wanted to ask for was something huge.

Just as his thoughts deepened, his phone buzzed in the passenger seat next to him. An unknown number.

He frowned. Unknown numbers usually meant trouble. He let it ring once. Twice. By the third ring, his gut told him to answer it.

“Who is this?” His voice was low, edged with irritation.

“Is this Mr Morandi?” The voice was official, clipped, and unfamiliar.

“Who’s asking?”

“This is Officer Mike. We would like to see you at our st

Ariana was seated by the mirror, fixing her make up when she saw Niccolo's call come in. “Hello?” She answered immediately. Niccolo wasn't the type to call, whenever he wanted to reach out to her, he would always text… and even that was rare. “I hope I'm not interrupting anything?” He asked. His voice sounded a lot more gentle and polite than Ariana remembered, it felt like she hadn't heard him talk in a long time. “No, of course not. What's up?”“Good then. Is your dad home?”“My… dad?” She was confused, why was he asking her that?“Yeah. I want you to help me out with something.” “Okay, but what does it have to do with my dad?”“I want to see him.” He said simply. “Could you help me arrange a meeting with him as soon as possible?”“Oh,” she couldn't fight the feeling of disappointment that formed at the corners of her mind. She had hoped that she was the one he wanted to talk to. “Okay, I'll ask when his schedule is open.”“Hmm, I'd rather he freed up his schedule for me soon.”

  • 038. The Seed Of Hatred

The air in the police station felt thick enough to choke on. The buzzing fluorescent lights hummed overhead, flickering as though they too were weary of the scene unfolding below. Niccolo stood in the center of it all, his gaze cold and unyielding, daring anyone to meet his eyes. His hand still tingled from the punch he had landed on Officer Mike. Before anyone else spoke, Lyla raised her trembling hand and pointed at him. “Can you see how violent he is? Beating up cops and threatening women,” she said quickly, her voice pitched with false sincerity. “you can tell that he's clearly not a good person. My friend here was robbed and attacked, and we barely managed to get her to the police station with officer Mike's help. The criminal mentioned Niccolo's name, and he invited him here but rather than apologizing or trying to sort things out, he went crazy and beat him up instead!”The silence that followed was heavy, only broken by the pained groans of Officer Mike clutching his bloody n

  • 036. A Past

The bank was crowded that morning, but Niccolo didn’t feel it. He stood in line, Jenna at his side, the sound of murmuring voices and shuffling feet a dull hum in his ears. He had grown used to this routine by now; mountains of cash, suspicious eyes from the staff, a tedious verification process. But Jenna always smoothed the way with her quick smile and authoritative tone.Still, it drained him. Watching the clerks count bill after bill, seeing their disbelief when the total was confirmed, it reminded him too much of what he didn’t understand. The fortune wasn’t his. Not really. Not yet.Jenna turned to him once the paperwork was signed and the receipt tucked away. “So,” she said lightly, tapping her fingernail against the counter, “when are you taking me out again?”Her eyes glimmered with suggestion, her lips curved into a smile she knew most men couldn’t resist. But Niccolo only tightened his jaw and muttered, “Later. I’m busy with work.”The smile faltered, but she didn’t press f

Ariana sat frozen, her hands pressed against her knees, staring at Niccolo with an unreadable expression. Confusion swirled with hurt in her chest. She opened her mouth, closed it again, then looked at him as though she might be able to pull the truth from his eyes if she stared long enough.Selene, however, blinked, still in disbelief. She thought she had misheard, that maybe Niccolo’s words had been twisted by her own wishful imagination. But no, when she searched his face for the slightest flicker of humor, she found none. His jaw was set, his eyes steady. He was serious.Niccolo inhaled deeply, steadying himself. Every word he spoke was deliberate, his tone calm though the air around him burned with tension. “I know how it sounds. But this is what I want.”He looked first at Ariana, the woman who had been kind to him when he had nothing, who had never turned away despite his scars and flaws. He knew her feelings were sincere, and the way she had been open about them from the start

  • 034. An Unusual Proposal

Niccolo had made up his mind.He knew he couldn’t depend on the whispering voice in his head. Its guidance, its mysterious mature, had only dragged him deeper into shadows he didn’t understand. If he wanted real answers, he needed to go back to the only person who had given him even a fragment of truth, the elderly woman. But that could wait. For now, he had another promise to keep. The two days he gave Ariana had passed, and he was sure she would be waiting. That morning, Niccolo rose before dawn. He stood before the mirror, adjusting his shirt until every line lay neat against his shoulders. His face was calm, but beneath the surface, his blood carried the weight of a thousand possibilities.“Selene,” he called softly. She emerged from the bedroom, still in her night robe, her hair tumbling in loose curls. “Yes?”“Get dressed,” Niccolo said. “Something nice. We’re going out.”She tilted her head curiously. “Where?”“Somewhere important,” he replied, his tone leaving no room for furt
