Rose alighted from the taxi after appreciating the driver. Elijah couldn't stop staring at her through the glass window till she entered the hospital.
“I'm alighting here too." He said and stepped down from the taxi. “Going after your crush huh? I admire your boldness but don't you think that lady is way out of your league?" The driver said with a little smile. Elijah simply smiled at him. Meanwhile, along the passage of the hospital stood Rose and a doctor in white lab coat with a stethoscope hanging around his neck. “Young lady you're playing dice with the life of your mother! You can't afford $20,000 to save her life!!? How disappointing! Let me make it clear now that the more you delay the payment, the more the bill will increase! " The doctor berated her. Rose's heart sank to her stomach. Two weeks ago, her mother suddenly collapsed in their living room and when she rescued her to the hospital, she was diagnosed with lung cancer. The doctor asked her to pay $20,000 for her treatment but she couldn't afford it which was exactly what led her to ‘the west bank’ where she was falsely accused of fraud. “I'll.. I'll pay, doctor. I plead for more time to hustle for the money...things have just been so rough for me these days." She said with a shaky breath, the weight of the situation choking her out. “That's all you have been saying! Your mother might die anytime soon and you'll be blamed if that eventually happens!!" The doctor continued, his voice hurting Rose more. Tears clouded in her eyes, threatening to spill down. Elijah had followed Rose into the hospital and he was walking along the passage but he suddenly halted when he saw Rose being scolded by a doctor. Elijah heard the doctor continue, his voice filled with anger rather than persuasion. “..you have just 24hrs to pay for her treatment or we'll throw her out of the hospital!!" Elijah retraced his step back to the hospital lobby and met a nurse on the counter. “Good afternoon nurse. The lady over there...why is the doctor scolding her.." He pointed in Rose's direction. The nurse looked in the direction he pointed. “Oh..you mean Rose Wallace? Her mother had been sick for the past two Weeks now and she has been unable to pay for her treatment." Elijah glanced at Rose again before asking. “What kind of disease?" He pressed on. The nurse looked at him for a few seconds. “Are you in any way related to her? It's against the hospital's protocol to reveal such information to strangers." She said, Elijah exhaled and laid his hand on the desk, eager to persuade the nurse. “ I understand Nurse but you make an exception here. I want to pay for the treatment." He made his intention known. The nurse observed him critically, looking at him from head to toe and she chuckled slightly. “You want to do what?" She asked with an arched brow as if she didn't hear Elijah the first time. “You heard me well, nurse. I'm paying for the treatment." Elijah repeated seriously, his voice laced with confidence. The nurse leaned closer interestingly. “Alright. I'll make an exception for you." She said and looked around before she continued. “Her mother was diagnosed with lung cancer and she's meant to pay $20,000 for her treatment." The nurse revealed because she knew Elijah was only curious. “Just $20,000!!?" Elijah uttered as if the money is a meager amount for a cheap pizza. The nurse looked at him surprisingly. “Just?" She raised her brow. “$20,000 is a huge amount of money." She added. “I'll pay $30,000 for her treatment but you have to make sure she's moved to a more sophisticated ward where she'ld be offered the best treatment." Elijah said. The nurse adjusted on her seat, shock glinting in her eyes. This guy dressed like a beggar is going to pay $30,000! For someone who he hardly knows?! Impossible! “Are..are you trying to start a joke now sir? This isn't the right place to do that." The nurse stated, disbelief laced in her voice. “Does it look like I'm joking? Someone's life is at stake here, how would I joke with such a thing!!" Elijah sounded desperate and eager to clear things. Seeing the seriousness on his face, the nurse gulped hard. “Okay..okay..how are you going to pay?" She asked, still doubting if Elijah was actually serious. “I'm paying with a card." Elijah said and reached out for his card in his pocket. When the Nurse saw it, she gasped in shock almost blurting out the words; ‘Black card' It's indeed a black card, glinting under the light of the lobby. On it is the letter ‘E' stylishly carved on it. “You're ... you're really going to pay?" The nurse looked at him, her eyes dilated Slightly. Elijah simply nodded without even batting a brow. The nurse collected the card and slipped it into the payment machine on the desk. “Here sir. Your pin." She handed him the portable payment machine to enter his pin. Elijah collected it and tapped the Keys on the machine as he input his pin then he gave it back for the nurse to conclude the transaction. The nurse gulped hard and slowly input $30,000 on the machine. A last tap on the Key processed the transfer. Her eyes widened and a soft gasp escaped from her lips. She raised her head and looked at Elijah with the shock registered on her face. “It's.. it's done sir. $30,000 successfully deposited." Her voice trembled slightly, laced with shock because she wasn't expecting Elijah who she earlier thought to be a beggar could have such an amount in his account. The nurse smiled and her countenance shifted to a practiced respect which wasn't really there when she first sighted Elijah. “What else will you need sir? I'll gladly get it done." She said with a genuine smile on her face. Elijah simply nodded, recognising her intention to impress him. “Just Make sure Rose's mother is given the best medical attention." He retrieved his Card and smiled at the Nurse who was still in shock and walked out. Rose on the other hand was in her mother's ward, seated at the edge of the bed where her mother laid. The woman’s eyes were closed. No treatment had been given to her since Rose hadn't paid a dime for the treatment. Seeing her mother in such a critical deteriorating health condition made her heart bleed painfully. She held her hand and squeezed it softly. Tears streamed down from her eyes. “I'm.. I'm sorry I couldn't be a good daughter to you mum. I have failed as a daughter for I couldn't help you get better..I.." Her voice trailed into a sob and the tears poured out from her eyes. In her emotional storm, four nurses entered the ward and Rose stood up instantly. She wiped her tears. “We're taking her out." One of them said briefly. “What!!..No.. please..I beg you.." Rose started pleading, desperate to keep her mother in the hospital. “I..I'll pay the money..I promise.." She cried out yet the nurses didn't listen. They whisked the wheel bed out. Rose scampered after them to see Dr. Hex outside- the doctor who was scolding her earlier. The doctor surprisingly smiled at her. Was he mocking her situation? But his next statement shocked Rose and made her halt “We're transferring your mother to the VIP ward. There she'll have the best treatment." “What!!!" Rose gasped.
