The tiger took a step forward. Its massive paws made no sound on the bones. It began to circle the group in a slow, deliberate arc, its eyes sliding from face to face, pausing a heartbeat on each soldier as though weighing which one would be the easiest to take down.

“My lady,” Brannock said, his voice trembling despite his best efforts, “it is stalking us.”

“I can see that.”

“What do we do?”

“We do exactly nothing,” Elvyn said. “We stand here and we wait.”

“For what?”

“For her.”

  • Chapter 273: The Burning Rivers:

“I was very close.” She exhaled. “But Darius slapped him first. And I thought, well. Perhaps the lesson is enough.”“You were being merciful.”“I was being strategic.” Melissa’s eyes glinted. “A dead Varek is a martyr. A humiliated Varek is a debtor. He will remember tonight. He will hate me for it. And hatred, properly managed, is a very useful tool.”“He will try to kill you.”“He will try many things.”“That is not comforting.”“It was not intended to be.” She leaned her head back against the chair. “He is clever, sister. More than Darius realizes. He plays a deeper game than any of them suspect. But he is also a man who has never been truly afraid, and tonight, for the first time in twenty years, I made him afraid. That changes him.”“Changes him how?”“It makes him careful. Careless men make mistakes. Careful men make plans.” A faint, grim smile. “I would prefer him careless.”“Then why not kill him?”“Because I want to know who he reports to.” Her eyes narrowed. “Did you notice?

  • Chapter 272: The way of caution:

Varek rose. He stood for a moment, looking down at the man who had struck him, and something unreadable passed behind his eyes. Then he bowed, stiffly, correctly, and walked to the door. At the threshold, he paused.“My lord,” he said, without turning. “A word of caution.”“Yes?”“You said that you ordered me to watch her. Quietly.” His voice was perfectly level. “I did so. And I was caught. That was a failure of execution, and I accept the blame. But I would remind you that the instruction came from you.”Darius’s face did not change. “I am aware.”“I merely wish to be clear.”“You are very clear.”“Good night, my lord.”He left. The door closed. Darius sat motionless on the edge of the bed, staring at the spot where Varek had stood, and a slow, cold shiver crept up his spine. After a while, he rose, crossed to the table, and poured himself a goblet of wine. His hand shook slightly as he drank. In the east wing, in a chamber warded by silver light and sealed against every spell and s

  • Chapter 271: Abandoned Ships:

Varek sat. He lowered himself stiffly into a high-backed chair beside the hearth, his spine straight, his chin raised. The firelight played over his face, deepening the hollows beneath his cheekbones. He looked, in that moment, like a man carved from stone, and the stone was cracking. For a long time, neither of them spoke. Darius stared into the fire. Varek stared at nothing. The silence stretched between them, thick and heavy and charged with twenty years of loyalty and ambition and quiet, unspoken resentment.“You humiliated me,” Varek said at last.“I protected you.”“You struck me.”“I struck you so that she would not.”“She would not have.”“She would have done worse.” Darius rubbed his face with both hands. “You did not see her, Varek. You were not in that hall when she killed Bastian. You were not there when she threw the guard through the glass. She is not like us. She does not play our games. She has no ambition we can bribe, no fear we can exploit. She is a force, and a for

  • Chapter 270: The Cold Grave:

Varek raised his eyes. They were black, depthless, and utterly cold. He held her gaze for a long, silent moment, and the air between them seemed to crackle.“I am sorry,” he said, slowly and distinctly. “I wronged you. It will not happen again.”“Better.”“Is it enough?”“For now.” She let the words hang, then added, in a voice so soft it was almost kind, “Rise, Lord Varek. You look ridiculous on your knees.”He rose. He did not brush off his coat. He stood very straight, his hands at his sides, his cheeks flaming, and said nothing.“I will tell you why I am allowing this to go,” Melissa said, addressing the whole room now, her voice calm and clear and carrying. “Why I have not taken my sister and left. Why I have not torn the walls of this palace down around your ears.”No one answered.“I am allowing it for one reason. One.” She raised a single finger. “I wish to see how this ends. I am curious about the boy. I am curious about the Hand. I am curious about what you are all so afraid

  • Chapter 269: The day the moon turned Blue:

“Everyone has something to fear.”“Do they?” She smiled again, and the smile was terrible. “Tell me, then. What do I fear?”Varek said nothing.“You do not know. Because you have not troubled to learn.” She took a slow step toward him, her staff clicking against the floor. “That is the trouble with men like you. You study the surface. You catalogue habits, weaknesses, vanities. You never ask what lies beneath.”“I—”“I am going to tell you what lies beneath, Lord Varek. A great deal of anger. A great deal of grief. And a very short temper for those who mock either.” She stopped a pace from him. “You have mocked both tonight.”“I mocked nothing.”“You listened to my sister and I speak of our dead mother and father. You wrote it down. You carried it to your master. You have taken the most private thing I own and turned it into a line item in a ledger.”Varek’s gaze dropped, just for an instant.“I have killed men for less,” Melissa said, very softly.“Enough,” Darius said.He had moved.

  • Chapter 268: Speak Boldly:

“You are not afraid. A man who is innocent is afraid, because he does not know what is coming. A man who is guilty is calm, because he has already rehearsed every possible outcome.” She smiled slightly. “You have been standing there for three minutes, and you have not once asked what happened to the servant’s face.”Varek’s lips thinned.“Who did that to him, my lord?” Melissa asked, turning to Darius. “Did you not wonder? A man is on his knees, bleeding from his eyes, his nose, his mouth. Did you not think to ask?”“I assumed you had questioned him.”“I did. But Varek did not ask. Because he already knew.”The silence stretched. Garrow shifted his weight. One of the guards at the door cleared his throat nervously and then froze, as though he had made a terrible mistake.“It is a matter of delicacy,” Varek said, finally. His voice remained smooth, but a thread of something hard had entered it. “My lord, if I may speak to you privately—”“No.”“I think it wise—”“I said no.” Darius’s v
