Chapter 6

The morning sun broke harshly over the skyline, casting long, sharp shadows across the polished glass and steel facade of Apex Technologies. I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of my executive office on the fortieth floor, sipping a cup of hot black coffee while reviewing the final acquisition paperwork for Julian Vance's failing enterprise. My mind was remarkably calm, devoid of any lingering bitterness or resentment. The past was a locked chapter; my eyes were firmly set on the future.

Marcus burst into my office without knocking, holding a sleek tablet in his hand with a triumphant grin stretched across his face. 'Silas, you won't believe what just happened downstairs at the reception desk. You need to see this security feed right now.'

I turned around slowly, setting my coffee mug down on the mahogany desk. 'What is it, Marcus? Did Julian try to storm the building again?'

'Worse,' Marcus laughed, spinning the tablet around so I could see the live camera feed from the main lobby. 'It's Elena. She has been waiting downstairs since seven o'clock this morning. She's begging the security team to let her up, crying her eyes out and telling everyone that she used to be my co-founder's wife. The media reporters outside have already caught wind of it and started snapping photographs.'

I stared at the screen, watching Elena's frantic expression. Her designer handbag was clutched tightly in her hands, her hair slightly disheveled from the morning drizzle. Just a few weeks ago, she had stood in high-society rooms laughing as she called me a nobody. Now, the tables had turned completely, and the reality of her choices was crashing down around her with terrifying velocity.

'Tell security to escort her off the premises,' I said quietly, turning my gaze back toward the glittering cityscape outside.

'Are you sure you don't want to go down and say hello?' Marcus asked, raising an eyebrow. 'Even just to watch her squirm a little bit?'

'No,' I replied firmly. 'Giving her attention would mean she still has some sort of emotional hold over me. She doesn't. To me, Elena is nothing more than a stranger who wandered into the wrong building. Handle it through legal channels if she continues to harass our staff.'

Marcus nodded, his expression turning serious as he swiped to another document on his tablet. 'Understood. Now, regarding the corporate restructuring of Julian's company, our legal team has finalized the asset absorption. Every single patent, server farm, and intellectual property asset he stole or mishandled is now officially under our direct control. His trial date for financial fraud is set for next month, and the prosecution has an airtight case.'

'Good,' I replied, adjusting my cuffs. 'Make sure our engineering division audits all their legacy code immediately. I want everything integrated into our secure cloud architecture by the end of the week.'

As Marcus left the room to execute the directives, I walked back over to my desk and sat down in the plush leather chair. I opened a blank project file on my primary monitor, my fingers resting lightly over the mechanical keyboard. My phone buzzed quietly on the desk—another missed call from an unknown number that I knew belonged to Elena. Without a second thought, I picked up the device, blocked the number permanently, and tossed it back onto the desk. My new life had no room for ghosts from the past.

Later that afternoon, I had to attend an emergency executive meeting with our primary international investors from Zurich. We gathered around the large oval glass table in the main conference room, reviewing quarterly revenue projections and global cybersecurity deployment metrics. The discussion was intense, driven by sharp insights and high-stakes financial decisions that would shape the future of tech infrastructure across three continents.

Halfway through the presentation, my corporate secretary knocked gently on the glass door and stepped inside, looking slightly uneasy. She walked over and whispered quietly into my ear. 'Mr. Vance, there is a woman downstairs who bypassed the front desk security by claiming she had an urgent legal subpoena for you. She managed to slip past the elevators and is currently waiting in the private reception lounge.'

I paused mid-sentence, looking up at my secretary. 'Did security identify her?'

'Yes, sir. It's Mrs. Elena Vance—or rather, Ms. Davis. She insisted that she must speak with you privately, or she will cause a major public scene right outside the boardroom doors.'

A cold, quiet silence fell over the conference room as the foreign investors looked between us, sensing the sudden tension. I raised a hand to signal a brief five-minute recess, standing up from my chair with absolute composure.

'Excuse me, gentlemen,' I said calmly to the investors. 'I will handle this minor administrative distraction immediately.'

I walked out of the conference room and stepped into the private reception lounge. There she sat—Elena. When she heard the door open, she jumped up from the velvet sofa as if she had been struck by lightning. Her eyes were red-rimmed and swollen from crying, her clothes looking far less pristine than they used to. She looked like a woman who had completely unraveled from the inside out.

'Silas!' she sobbed, taking a desperate step forward. 'Thank God... please, Silas, you have to help me. Everything is gone. Julian was arrested this morning by federal agents, his penthouse has been seized by the bank, and my accounts have been frozen because of his fraudulent schemes. I have nowhere to go, Silas! I'm completely ruined!'

I folded my arms across my chest, looking down at her with an expression of profound indifference. The woman standing before me bore no resemblance to the proud, arrogant socialite who had dismissed me so callously on our anniversary night.

'Elena,' I began, my voice steady, cold, and entirely devoid of emotion. 'You made your choices very clearly three weeks ago when you chose to spend our anniversary in the arms of another man and publicly declared me to be no one worth mentioning. Why would you ever come to me for help now?'

'I was foolish!' she wept, reaching out to grab the sleeve of my suit jacket, though I stepped back smoothly to avoid her touch. 'I was blinded by his charm and his wealth! I didn't know he was a criminal, Silas! You were always so good to me, so patient... I realize now that you were the only real thing in my life. Please, just give me a second chance. I'll do anything. I'll be whatever you want me to be.'

I stared at her for a long, quiet moment, letting her desperate words hang heavily in the air between us. There was no triumph in my heart, only a strange, hollow realization of how fragile human vanity truly was.

'I am not the man I used to be, Elena,' I said quietly, turning toward the hallway. 'And you are no longer my concern. Security will escort you out of the building now. Do not ever attempt to come here again.'

Without waiting for her reply, I turned my back on her, walked back into the conference room, and closed the heavy oak door firmly behind me. As the lock clicked into place, the chapter of my past closed forever, leaving me standing in the bright, unfiltered light of my own hard-earned success.
