The lecture hall was a cavern of polished marble and cold, flickering aether-lights that hummed with a maddening, rhythmic frequency. Vaelric sat near the back, his posture slouched to hide the unnatural rigidity of his spine. Every fiber of his being screamed to leave, but Mira’s warning—a firm squeeze on his forearm moments before they split up—anchored him to the wooden bench.

"Keep your head down," Mira had whispered, her eyes darting toward the ornate balcony where the elite gathered. "If you react to anything you see, we’re dead. Just breathe, Valen."

He stared at the front of the hall, but his focus was elsewhere. Across the aisle, sitting amidst a cluster of silk-clad nobles, was Elara Vayne. Seeing her was like being struck by a physical blow. She looked as she always had—the grace of a swan, the sharp intellect in her gaze—but there was a hollow, haunting quality to her movements now. She was leaning slightly toward Lucien, who occupied the seat beside her, his hand resting possessively on the back of her chair.

"The resonance of the Frontier isn't merely a byproduct of decay," the lecturer droned on, his voice echoing against the vaulted ceiling. "It is a deliberate byproduct of the Great Correction. A necessary entropy to ensure the vitality of the core."

Vaelric’s jaw tightened until his teeth ached. Necessary entropy. He glanced at Lucien, who was whispering something into Elara’s ear. She laughed, a sound that was musical yet utterly devoid of genuine joy. It was a practiced, hollow sound, one designed to fit the room.

A student next to Vaelric leaned over, nudging him. "You look like you’re ready to vomit, mercenary. Don't worry, the history of the realm usually makes the stomach turn the first time."

Vaelric didn't look at him, keeping his eyes fixed on Elara. "Just tired of the preaching. It all sounds like a lie to me."

The student chuckled, a sharp, cynical noise. "It is a lie. But it’s a lie that buys you a warm bed and a full belly. Keep your mouth shut and you might live long enough to collect a paycheck."

"Is it really worth it?" Vaelric murmured, almost to himself.

"Worth it? Look at them," the student whispered, gesturing toward the balcony. "The Veyr bloodline and the Vayne legacy. They own the horizon. You don't ask if it’s worth it. You just try not to get stepped on."

Elara shifted, her gaze drifting lazily across the room as if she were bored by the lecture. Her eyes swept over the rows of commoners, the 'aspirants,' with the practiced indifference of a queen surveying dust. Then, her eyes landed on Vaelric.

She didn't look away immediately. Her brow furrowed, a flicker of confusion crossing her features. She looked at his hands, then up to his eyes—the eyes that burned with a darkness she had seen only once before, a lifetime ago.

Vaelric’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. The crown beneath his skin pulsed, a warning vibration that threatened to break his composure.

Lucien leaned closer to her, his voice projecting just enough to be heard. "Elara, my dear, you seem distracted. Is the lecture too dull for you?"

Elara blinked, the moment of recognition shattering as she turned her head toward him. "It’s not the lecture, Lucien. Just... a strange feeling."

"A feeling?" Lucien’s smile was thin, serpentine. "What kind of feeling?"

"Like I’ve seen that mercenary before," she said softly, though the ambient noise in the hall carried her words to Vaelric’s ears. "The one in the hood."

Lucien didn't even bother to look back. He just laughed, a dry, dismissive sound. "Commoners are all the same, Elara. They all have the same hungry, desperate look. Don't waste your focus on the help."

"Perhaps," Elara replied, though she glanced back toward Vaelric’s row, her expression unreadable.

Vaelric felt a cold sweat break across his brow. He forced himself to look down at his notes, scribbling nonsensical marks on the parchment. His hand was trembling.

"Stay calm," he hissed under his breath, the command directed at both the crown and his own shattered nerves.

The lecture finally concluded, and the room erupted into the chaotic noise of scholars dispersing. Vaelric rose, intent on making a quick exit toward the archives, but the surge of the crowd pinned him in the aisle. He felt a presence behind him, someone pushing through the press of bodies with an urgency that didn't match the casual gait of the other students.

"Excuse me," a voice said—a voice that felt like a phantom limb reaching out of his past.

Vaelric froze. He didn't turn around. He focused on the exit, his muscles coiled, ready to bolt.

"You," the voice said, closer now, insistent. "I know that walk. And I know the way you hold your shoulders when you think no one is watching."

Vaelric turned slowly, keeping his hood low. Elara stood there, her guards trailing a few steps behind, looking wary. She wasn't smiling, and the icy composure she had shown Lucien was entirely absent. There was only a raw, haunting intensity in her eyes.

"You’re mistaken," Vaelric said, his voice roughened, layered with a synthetic grit to mask his true tone. "I’m just a mercenary from the Isles. You’re seeing things, my lady."

Elara stepped closer, invading his personal space. The scent of her—faint lavender and something sharp, like cold rain—hit him with the force of a tidal wave. She reached out, her fingers hovering near his arm but not quite touching him.

"Mercenaries don't have eyes like that," she whispered, her voice dropping to a tremor. "Those eyes belong to someone who was erased from the archives a year ago."

Vaelric met her gaze, his own eyes darkening with the familiar, forbidden violet hue. He didn't blink. He didn't breathe.

"That person is dead," he said, his voice flat, a mask of cold indifference. "You’re talking to a ghost, and ghosts don't appreciate being haunted."

Elara’s hand trembled, her eyes searching his face, looking for the man she had loved, looking for the boy who had been cast into the mud to rot. She leaned in, so close that he could feel her breath against his jaw, and whispered the only name that mattered.

"Vaelric?"

The world seemed to stop. The hum of the academy, the distant chatter of the nobles, the weight of the crown—everything vanished, leaving only the two of them in the heart of the enemy's sanctuary.

Vaelric didn't pull away, but he didn't lean in. He remained still, a statue of hidden fire, waiting for the trap to snap shut.

"But she was just a woman, Silas. How could she build something that even the Regent fears?"Silas paused, turning to face him. Her expression was devoid of the cold professional distance she had worn earlier. "Because she knew the math, Vaelric. She didn't just understand the bridge; she understood the hunger that fueled it. You see, the Regent thinks the crown is a tool. Your mother knew it was a cage."Mira moved closer to Vaelric, her hand seeking his. She laced her fingers through h

The air in the cramped archival shaft turned frigid, the very metal of the walls vibrating with a power that felt like a mockery of his own. His father—the man who had discarded him into the gutter to test the limits of his survival—stood bathed in the unnatural luminescence of his own eyes."You really think you can just wander in here?" his father asked, his voice a low, melodic thrum. "Did you honestly believe the maze of my own making would keep me from finding you?"Vaelric backed away, his boots skidding silently on the cold plating. His heart hammered a desperate, uneven rhythm against his ribs. He looked toward the exit, but Lucien was already gone, leaving only the oppressive weight of the proctors in his wake. He realized then that he couldn't win a stand-up fight here, not without revealing the true, devastating nature of his power. And if he did that, he would be painting a target on his back for the entire Academy."I’m putting it down," Vaelric muttered, hi

"Walking around the academy at this hour? You’re asking for an execution."Vaelric didn't turn around. He kept his gaze fixed on the darkened spectator benches. "Get lost, Lucien.
