Chapter Four

That evening, everyone in Sonia’s family had gathered at the family house. The large living room was full, and more chairs had to be brought in to sit all the members.

It was a serious meeting as business investors, the rich uncles, the fat aunties, the cousins were there and even the younger children sat on the floor. They were discussing the future of the family and how to expand their business ventures.

The family had grown over the years, and they owned different companies and properties. Agnes Nicole, Sonia’s grandma and the head of the family, sat at the center of the room, listening to everyone talk.

But even as the discussion was going on, many of the family members began making side comments about Grey.

“I don’t even know why Sonia married that useless man in the first place,” one of the uncles whispered loudly enough for others to hear.

“He’s so worthless. Doesn’t contribute to anything in the family. Just a poor man eating from our wealth,” another aunt added.

“Imagine him thinking he can be part of our family. He doesn’t even belong in the same social class with us,” said one of Sonia’s older cousins.

Everyone laughed.

Sonia sat in the corner, trying to act like she didn’t care. But the mocking made her feel ashamed, and at the same time, she enjoyed the fact that everyone was on her side.

Grandma raised her hand and the room went silent.

“Let’s continue,” she said. “We need to make decisions on who handles the contract of the real estate company. And also the pharmaceutical company. We need someone who is experienced.”

An uncle raised his hand. “Sonia’s boss is a strong businessman. Maybe he can help the family manage the real estate expansion.”

Grandma nodded slowly. “Hmm… we shall think about it.”

Another cousin raised a hand. “Grandma, I think we should use this chance to push Grey out of the family completely. He’s not useful to us. Since Sonia said he left the house, we can now remove his name from everything pertaining to this family.”

The whole room murmured in agreement. “Yes, yes, let’s push him out. He brings shame to our family name.”

“Sonia deserves better. That guy is nothing but a burden.”

“He never even attends meetings like this one.”

Sonia looked around, seeing the way everyone was talking about Grey. It gave her courage.

She stood up and cleared her throat. “Grandma, it’s true. Grey is not part of us anymore. He cheated on me and left me in shame. I told him to come today and apologize, but he refused. It shows that he has no respect for the family.”

Grandma narrowed her eyes. “He refused to come even when you asked him to?” she asked.

“Yes, Grandma. He said he had better things to do.”

The murmurs increased. “What pride! For someone who eats our food and lives in our house!”

“Such disrespect. We should never allow him back.”

“Sonia should quickly file for a divorce and end the marriage with him.”

Just as the noise in the room was getting louder, the main door of the house slowly pushed open.

Everyone turned their heads toward the entrance.

Grey stepped into the house without saying a word.

The whole room fell silent. Sonia’s jaw dropped because she hadn't expected him to come here.

Grandma squinted her eyes. “What… what is he doing here?”

Everyone watched in silence as Grey walked in calmly, dressed in a simple white shirt and jeans. He had a small bag in his hand.

He looked around the room, meeting their surprised faces one by one.

Finally, his eyes rested on Grandma and he gave her a respectful nod.

“Good afternoon, everyone,” he said.

Nobody responded to his greetings, not even the children made a sound.

“Bastard!” Grandma frowned deeply. “Why are you coming by this time?”

“I came to get my things,” he said plainly.

A loud scoff came from one of the cousins. “Look at him. So shameless and arrogant.”

“Do you think this is your house?” another said.

“What gave you the guts to enter this meeting and interrupt us?” Grandma asked in a sharp voice.

Grey looked around again, still calm. “I never planned to interrupt. I just wanted to take what belongs to me and leave quietly.”

Sonia finally found her voice. “How dare you walk into this house after what you did to me?” she asked angrily. “You left the house like a coward and now you come back without shame?”

Grey didn’t answer her. His face remained blank.

One of the uncles stood up. “You even have the nerve to stand there with that attitude. What is wrong with you, Grey? What exactly do you think you are?”

Another aunt added, “You should be ashamed. Walking into this family meeting like you’re one of us. You were never one of us.”

Grey gave a faint smile and shifted his bag from one hand to the other. “I’ve heard enough,” he said. “I just came for my things. I don’t need anything else from this family by the way.”

“You mean you don’t need Sonia?” Grandma asked him.

“No, ma. I don’t.” Grey looked her straight in the eye. “Not after I caught her cheating on me with her boss.”

Gasps filled the room.

Sonia looked embarrassed and angry at the same time. “It’s a lie, Grandma. He cheated on me, and now he’s trying to twist it back at me. He was the one who betrayed our marriage. I saw him in bed with another woman myself,” Sonia said, crying loudly and wiping fake tears from her face.

Grey narrowed his eyes. He looked confused at first, but then his expression turned cold.

Grandma turned sharply to him and ordered him to apologize immediately.

Grey raised a brow and stared straight at her. He shook his head slowly in silence and said. “I don’t owe anyone here an apology. If anyone should be saying sorry, it’s Sonia. She’s the one who cheated on me, and now she’s standing here acting like the victim and telling lies about me in front of everyone,” Grey said, pointing at Sonia calmly.

Everyone looked shocked.

Sonia’s mouth dropped open in disbelief.

Grandma’s face changed. She turned red with anger and was about to speak when Grey suddenly reached into his pocket and brought out his phone.

He tapped the screen a few times and turned on the Bluetooth speaker sitting near the table.

“Since she is telling lies about me,” he said slowly, “let everyone hear the real truth.”

A sound played from the speaker. The voice record of a man and woman talking on a phone call.

Sonia’s voice was clearly heard calling the man “baby,” telling him how glad she was that Grey was not around. The voice even said she would get rid of Grey soon.

The entire family was in disbelief. People looked at each other, confused and stunned.

Sonia’s eyes widened in shock. Her whole body trembled. She took a step back and her face was pale as chalk.

“As a matter of fact, that was recorded weeks ago,” Grey said flatly. “She didn’t know I had a hidden recorder. I had my doubts, so I placed it under the bed.”

Sonia burst into tears again, but this time the sadness on her face was real. She didn’t expect this nor had she known Grey had proof against her.

Grey looked around at everyone’s shocked faces and put his phone back in his pocket. Without saying anything else, he turned and was about to walk away when someone walked into the house. To the surprise of everyone, it turned out to be Sonia's boss, Mr Bobby Loren!
