Grey sat quietly in the back seat of the black G-Wagon as it moved steadily through the city traffic. The driver said nothing, only glancing at Grey through the mirror every now and then. The atmosphere inside the car was calm, but Grey’s heart burned with rage.
He kept replaying the image of Sonia and her boss kissing in his mind. He gritted his teeth. All these months, he had endured everything, just to complete the final test from his grandfather. He had stayed low, lived as a poor man, and married into Sonia’s rich but arrogant family without revealing his real identity.
They had mocked him, insulted him, and treated him like trash. And Sonia, the one person who was supposed to be on his side, had betrayed him the worst. Now that the test was over, it was time to take back his dignity.
The car stopped in front of a luxury building that looked like a kingdom among the rest. The guards at the gate moved aside immediately as the vehicle approached.
Grey stepped out and looked at the large golden sign at the front of the building: “Watson International Group.”
This was his family’s company. One of the biggest and most powerful businesses in the country.
He had come back, not as a poor man, but as the new CEO.
“Sir, the board members are waiting in the meeting room,” the driver said respectfully.
Grey nodded. He adjusted his jacket and walked through the front doors. Everyone in the lobby stopped what they were doing and looked up. Some whispered while the others gasped.
“Is that Mr. Grey?”
“The old man’s grandson?”
“He’s so young and handsome.”
He ignored them and headed straight to the elevator.
Upstairs, in the highest conference room of the company, ten men and women were already seated. All wore expensive attire and serious expressions. When Grey walked in, everyone stood up.
“Welcome back, Young Master Watson,” the elders said, bowing slightly.
Grey nodded. “Thank you all for coming. Let’s begin.”
He sat at the head of the table. The same position his grandfather once held.
“We’ve all confirmed the results of the final test,” one of the board members said. “You have passed every stage. The last one was patience and loyalty under humiliation. You endured it silently and never once did you use your real identity.”
Grey stayed quiet.
“Before your grandfather passed away, he left behind everything for you. All companies and all the properties are under your name. From today, you are the Chairman of Watson International Group.”
Everyone clapped, but Grey only gave a small smile. Inside, he felt nothing but bitterness. Not because of the inheritance, but because of his grandfather's death. The man who taught him everything he knows.
“I need time to grieve without being reminded why…” Grey said suddenly.
The board members looked confused.
“It’s a personal matter,” Grey added calmly. “No one should interfere.”
They all nodded.
After the meeting, Grey went into his new office and closed the door. He sat on the leather chair and stared at the city through the glass window.
He remembered how his grandfather used to tell him bedtime stories and how he went hunting with his grandfather when he was a kid.
Now, those days are gone.
Grey stayed there quietly, mourning in his own way. He didn’t cry nor did he speak to anyone. He just sat still, reflecting.
After a while, he stood up. There was something he had to do.
Grey left Watson International Group in silence and told no one where he was going. He got into a different car this time and drove himself. It was a short drive to the other side of the city.
He arrived at a small building that looked different to the luxury he had just left behind. The paint was fading, and the signboard looked worn out.
This was the company where he worked as a cleaner for the past year.
They had never paid him on time. In fact, they owed him several months’ salary. But he wasn't here to ask for his money.
Grey stepped into the building and walked through the hallway. A few staff members saw him and rolled their eyes.
“Look who finally came to work,” one said.
“He’s supposed to be here early. But now he comes like he’s someone very important,” another whispered.
Grey said nothing. He kept walking. He reached the manager’s office and knocked once before entering.
The man behind the desk looked up. It was Mr. Vincent, the company manager. The moment he saw Grey, his eyes filled with disgust.
Mr. Vincent had always hated Grey. Not just because he was poor, but because of Sonia Nicole.
A long time ago, Mr. Vincent had a crush on her. He tried many times to get close to her, but she never gave him any chance. Then one day, he found out that Sonia had married Grey.
It made Mr. Vincent angry. He couldn’t understand how someone like Grey, who had nothing, was able to marry a rich and beautiful woman like Sonia. From that day, he started treating Grey badly at work.
He gave him the hardest tasks, shouted at him for no reason and insulted him every chance he got.
“You! What are you doing here?” he barked.
“I came to resign,” Grey said calmly.
“Resign?” Mr. Vincent stood up and walked around the desk. “You’re lucky we didn’t fire you. You show up late, and now you talk about resigning?”
Grey stayed silent.
Mr. Vincent suddenly slapped him hard across the face.
“You useless dog! You think you’re somebody? You married into a rich family and started feeling like a big man? You think I don’t know why Sonia picked you? Pity. That’s all it was.”
Grey’s face turned slightly to the side from the slap, but his expression did not change. He slowly turned his head back and looked at Mr. Vincent.
“I never disrespected you,” Grey said quietly. “Not once. But don’t ever raise your hand against me again.”
Mr. Vincent laughed coldly. “What can you do? Huh? You think you scare me?”
Grey reached into his shirt, pulled off the work badge on his chest, and tossed it gently on the desk.
“I’m done here,” he said.
“You ungrateful bastard! Do you think we need you?” Mr. Vincent shouted.
Grey turned to leave, but before walking out, he stopped and faced Mr. Vincent one last time.
“Be careful how you treat people. The man you look down on today might be the one sitting above you tomorrow.”
With that, he opened the door and stepped out. He walked down the hallway without looking back.
Everyone who saw him leaving sensed something had changed.
Grey wasn’t the same poor man they thought he was. And he wasn’t done yet. There was still one last thing he needed to do.
